Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around 28 - 28.5 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

One Net, Australia

This is a bit stupid but I suppose an affected reader or two may just happen to be reading the web page version of this newsletter wondering where their subscription has gone. If you are subscribed with an @one.net.au email account then your mail is being returned as an unknown ISP. I have deleted all the offending addresses. You will need to resubscribe - apply.html

Dennis Buchanan

Earlier this year (2001) PNG lost Bryan Grey, one of many remarkable aviation characters. Now Dennis Buchanan described as a pioneer aviator and the king of the skies in PNG has passed away. Sir Dennis, 68, died on the 28th of August after a long bout with leukaemia.

TV Programming

One of the questions that I get asked frequently is - "what sort of television do you watch?"

I'll list some of the stations that we are able to receive. Along with our local TV station EmTV (http://www.emtv.com.pg) we also have access to several satellite broadcasters such as -

Some people have access to other channels and still we can't find anything decent to watch.

Aviation Websites

For those interested in aviation, apart from visiting the above sites paying a visit to http://aviation-safety.net/database/country/P2.shtml might prove to be interesting. Air Niugini rates a couple of mentions.

Gold Smuggling

Two foreigners have been detained whilst attempting to leave PNG with 10 kilogram of gold nuggets hidden away in their baggage. The gold was contained in seven glass jars.

World Sevens Rugby

It has been tipped that former Wallaby stars David Campese and Glen Ella will lead the Australian Barbarian team to Port Moresby for a scheduled match to be played in October. The PNG Barbarian team is being sponsored by Air Niugini as the major sponsor and Kumul Hotels and the city of Port Moresby as the host sponsor.

General Sports

Lae rugby league referees in Lae have received new uniforms courtesy of a local spare parts supplier.

The Port Moresby Defence Australian Rules Football Club has received a set of new uniforms and a donation of K10,000. The uniforms came from a former player and the PNG Defence Force Headquarters donated the money.

Parliament

Parliament has risen and will not sit again until the 8th of October this year.

Stolen Goods

Hear that a customer of a recent auction conducted by the Sheriff has found out that some of the equipment he purchased was stolen property. The person, who passed on this little bit of gossip, was wondering if that made the sheriff guilty of dealing in stolen property??

Air Niugini

I have heard that any time soon Air Niugini (http://www.airniugini.com.pg) will be launching a new look website. It has been designed for the low / slow bandwidth into PNG so don't expect the latest and greatest whiz-bang show but a more streamlined new look.

Volcano Monitoring

Once again the lives of people living in the vicinity of several volcanoes are at stake due to the continual theft and destruction of monitoring equipment. Madang and East New Britain are two province affected.

Michael Varapik has been confirmed as the head of the Copra Marketing Board. Mr Varapik has worked at Air Niugini and the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust before going to the Copra Board.

Hospital Probe

The chairman of the hospital Board, Sir Brian Bell, has backed a probe into the running of the Port Moresby General Hospital. Milne Bay

The Governor of Milne Bay has pointed out that his government has only received 26 percent of the provinces budget allocation up to June of this year making it difficult to maintain existing infrastructure let alone expand.

Gurney

Air Niugini recently had to suspend flights to the Milne Bay province due to trees growing to tall near the runway. The Milne Bay administration stepped in and has organised to cut the trees down. It is believed that the Office of Civil Aviation did not have money to do the job.
