World Bank
According to the World Bank, the World Bank Board has approved a new, four-year country assistance strategy (CAS) for PNG that it hopes will help address the key development challenges facing the country through a long-term partnership with the government, the people and development partners. It also approved a $27.5 million credit from the Bank's zero-interest, concessional lending arm, the International Development Association (IDA), for a smallholder agriculture development project that aims to enhance smallholder incomes in a number of communities in West New Britain and Oro provinces.
ADB Loan
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and its partners will lend 108 million dollars to Papua New Guinea to expand its main port area, The ADB will extend a 100 million dollar loan to fund the construction of facilities including a tidal basin, buildings, roads, drainage, water and electricity services in Lae, the largest and most important port in PNG. Since 1995, the port has experienced huge annual increases in cargo stretching it to the limit of its capacity, the ADB said.
Broken Beer Ban
Three Australian and two New Zealand managers at an oil palm operation have been ejected from flood-ravaged Oro Province after being caught trying to bring in alcohol in defiance of a ban. They were based in the provincial capital Popondetta with Higaturu Oil Palms, a subsidiary of Cargill Holdings with head offices in Singapore. The five were kicked out of the province on the orders of Emergency Controller and PNG Defence Force army colonel Vagi Oala after they tried to fly in 60 cartons of beer for the festive period. An official with PNG's Foreign Affairs Department said it had not ruled out the possibility of deporting the five, or disallowing their return to PNG from leave.

Kainantu Mine Shuts
The Kainantu gold mine has halted operations as new owners, Barrick attempt talks with local landowners. Barrick representative Phil Stephenson said that the future of Kainantu is dependent on everyone working co-operatively together. Barrick hopes that the landowners will understand this too; He said they will not negotiate while under threat and while the mine remains closed.
Alotau Hospital
Alotau General Hospital in the Milne Bay province is now using funds obtained from the outpatients' fees to buy new medicine.

Robbers Shot Dead
Two men are dead, one is in a critical condition and one is behind bars after their attempt to rob an armoured vehicle containing gold bars was foiled last Thursday. The robbers were believed to have used four vehicles and were about to carryout their deed near the Two Mile settlement when they were interrupted by armed security guards and police who had been tipped off that something of that nature would be carried out by a gang.
Food Aid Wasted
More than 200 tonnes of rice bound for the Trukai warehouse in Popondetta as well as relief supplies from AusAID for the Northern Province are all damaged and unfit for humans.
Also damaged with the food items were 63,110 kilograms of second clothes donated by Mondo Secondhand Shop in Port Moresby. Joint forces commander, Lieutenant Colonel Walter Enuma said yesterday he could not understand why the items were never put into a container, and just covered with canvas.

Fare Increase
Air Niugini has imposed an extra K35 on domestic fares as well as another US$5 on its international fares to cover the increase in fuel. The surcharge has been increased due to the higher fuel prices charged by InterOil. The last increase was in September 2005
Fuel Increase
Last month InterOil defied the government and unilaterally increased its fuel product charges -- http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20071213/news01.htm -- and the fuel saga has taken a volatile twist with vehicle owners in a Highlands province threatening to take legal action against InterOil, as opposition against the price increase gains pace.

EHP Budget
The Eastern Highlands provincial assembly has passed its K71 million 2008 budget that focuses on rural development. The budget is estimated to raise K17,194,900 in internal revenue an increase of K4,156,500 from last year's estimate of K13,038,400. K10,894,300 from the internal revenue estimate has been allocated for infrastructure development which includes rollover funds from the 2007 appropriation.
Siassi Island
Recently Siassi High School celebrated its 35th grade 10 graduation and the Siassi sub-centre of University of PNG's Morobe University Centre was opened.
Moses Jalina
Prominent PNG National and Supreme Court judge Moses Jalina has collapsed and died at PNG's Mt Hagen airport. He was rushed to the hospital but doctors could do little to save him as he was pronounced dead on arrival at PNG's Mt Hagen hospital. Doctors say he could have suffered a heart failure. The prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, has expressed sadness and says the judges death is a set back for the PNG Judiciary.

PNG Coffee
Small coffee growers in the country have signed a deal to sell their coffee to the first gourmet coffee shops to open in China's financial hub, Shanghai. The deal will see the PNG Grower Direct Coffee Company form a joint venture with the Shanghai Uncommon Grounds Coffee company, which will roast the beans and operate a chain of shops.
