Replace Lapun Planes
Opposition leader, Sir Mekere Morauta, has called on Air Niugini to replace its aging fleet. A fleet blamed for frequent flight delays and cancellations. Sir Mekere called on the Prime Minister to abandon the purchase of the K128 million Falcon jet and use the money to help Air Niugini to buy new planes to replace its current stock of lapun balus or old aircraft.

Sir Michael Somare has visited Australia's Parliament house and met with the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
Waigani Market
The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has recently announced that it has committed K2.3 million towards the redevelopment of the Waigani market. The project is estimated to take up to seven months to complete.
The NCDC's long term vision is have Port Moresby set the standards as the gateway to the rest of the country by having clean and safe facilities for its residents, tourists and other visitors to enjoy and be proud of.
AusAID Money Misspent
Australian PM, Kevin Rudd, has admitted that money spent by the Australian government on PNG has been misspent on hiring consultants rather than delivering essential assistance in teaching, in infrastructure and in health services on the ground in villages throughout the country. The admission confirms a widely held perception in PNG about the real effectiveness of Australia's approximately A$400 million (K800 million) aid programme.
Yule Island Help Required

Kaugere Primary School is celebrating its 50th anniversary. To coincide with the golden jubilee the school has announced a K6 million proposal for urgent rehabilitation of infrastructure will to be submitted to the National Capital District Commission (NCDC).
Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels
PNG's Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, who risked their own lives to provided vital help to Australian troops in PNG during World War II, are to receive commemorative medallion from the Australian government. The medals will be made available to surviving angels or to their widows or widowers.
Approximately 55,000 PNG citizens served during the war and carried supplies, built bases and airfields and evacuated the sick and wounded during fighting.
Maritime Surveillance
The maritime unit of the PNG Defence Force and National Fisheries Authority (NFA) have signed an ongoing memorandum of agreement for greater surveillance. The ongoing MoA is aimed at meeting new challenges and establishing a strategic partnership to deal with maritime surveillance needs and emergencies.
On a related matter, Defence Force commander Cmdr Peter Ilau said a small Casa 212 plane used during the Sandline crisis operations would be tasked to the NFA for aerial surveillance.

Different Treks
Following the death of two Australians aged under 40 while trekking along the Kokoda Track in the leadup to Anzac Day tour operators are now suggesting other easier wartime treks for those Australians who may not be up to the Kokoda challenge. One such trek retraces the Lark Force's desperate escape from the Japanese occupation on the island of New Britain during the Second World War.

19 Gun Salute
Sir Michael Somare was greeted by a 19-gun salute when he visited Australia's Parliament House in Canberra. Under overcast skies, Sir Michael inspected the federation guard on the forecourt of parliament house. He has also met Victorian premier John Brumby and visited bushfire-affected areas in Victoria.

Undersea Communication
Pipe Networks has started unrolling Australia's first international undersea cable link to be owned independently from large local telcos such as Telstra and Optus. The cable is being laid from Guam via Madang to Collaroy on Sydney's northern beaches. The link would provide 10Gbps on the PNG-Guam route and 10Gbps on the PNG-Australia route. Telikom PNG will own the cable station in Madang.

Madang Shootout
The sound of gunshots has sent people scurrying in Madang when police shot two men in the ankles they allege were connected to a robbery of an Islands Petroleum employee outside the Bank South Pacific in the town. Another man drowned while trying to swim away while the fourth alleged robber was arrested and is in police custody.

Alotau Clash
A clash between people from the Trobriands and Morima has left the usually peaceful town of Alotau, the provincial capital of the Milne Bay Province, in a tense state.
Porgera Houses Burn
Chairman of the Porgera Landowners Association, Mark Ekepa, reports police have burned 309 homes belonging to local landowners near the Porgera gold mine in Enga Province. Police Commissioner Gari Baki said he was not aware of the torching during the State of Emergency currently underway in the area.

Vale Herea Amini
Cathi Taukuro has written with sad news to say her uncle who Amini Park was named after in Boroko has died. Herea Amini died of chronic kidney failure in the early morning on Good Friday. He won the first Cleland Medal for Australian Football League (AFL) or Victorian Football League as it was called in those days.
Amini Park is the headquarters of the PNG Cricket. The ground was named Amini Park in 1983 after Herea Amini, who was one of the first Papua New Guineans to play and administer the sport of AFL.
Philemon Joins The National
Retired Post Courier editor-in-chief, Oseah Philemon, has joined The National newspaper as regional editor. He will be based at The National's Lae bureau and will coordinate regional operations.
