Parliament Recalled
Notices are being sent out to advise members of parliament that they are to attend on the 11th of January to elect a Governor General. The acting speaker, Francis Marus, has told the newspaper, The National, that any other government and opposition business, such as a proposed vote of no-confidence motion, will not be entertained.

PNG Sports Federation
The newly elected secretary-general of the Papua New Guinea Sports Federation and Olympic Committee has taken the reins on the 1st of January..
Auvita Rapilla took over from the veteran sportsman and long serving secretary-general, Sir John Dawanincura, who she defeated in a secret ballot by 29 votes to 6.
She says one of her first priorities is to tackle the communication problems within the Sports Federation, including access to the internet and resources for volunteers, and work on improving sports facilities in PNG.
The new secretary-general says she is gratified by the amount of support she has received.

Hailstorm Hits Villages
Villages in the Minimb area in the Hagen Central district of the Western Highlands have been hit by a hailstorm, strong winds and rain approaching the Christmas period. The storm caused massive destruction to cash crops and food gardens in the area. The strong winds uprooted trees and also destroyed other food crops like banana trees, sugar cane gardens and many other crops.

Pirates Shot
Three men have been shot dead and two others suspected of being pirates have been injured by police travelling in a hired, unmarked boat. A number of villagers travelling by dinghy and other small boats in Milne Bay province had made complaints about being held up and robbed.

ICC World Cricket
Division Three members of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League will be competing between the 22nd and the 29th of January. The countries taking part are:
Oman 11th in 2009 - relegated to 2011 Div 3
Denmark 12th in 2009 - relegated to 2011 Div 3
PNG 3rd in 2009 Div 3
Hong Kong 4th in 2009 Div 3
United States 1st in 2010 Div 4 - promoted to 2011 Div 3
Italy 2nd in 2010 Div 4 - promoted to 2011 Div 2
The event will be hosted by Hong Kong and China
After the conclusion of the tournament the teams will be distributed as follows:
1st & 2nd: Promoted to 2011 Division Two
3rd & 4th: Remain in 2013 Division Three
5th & 6th: Relegated to 2012 Division Four

Laloki Bursts Banks
The Laloki River, outside the National Capital, has burst its banks destroying food gardens and properties. Over 500 people have been forced from their homes.
Vale Fred Hargesheimer
Fred Hargesheimer, while flying his Lockheed P-38 F-4 on a photographic reconnaissance mission over the island of New Britain during World War II was shot down by a Japanese Ki-45 Nick fighter. Fred returned many years later to help the people that helped him evade the Japanese so many years before by building a school to be known as the Airmen's Memorial School.
The U.S. military awarded Hargesheimer a Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Perhaps more meaningful the people Nakanai, where he was shot down, declared him "Suara Auru" -- their "Chief Warrior". In 2006, Nakanai tribesmen carried Hargesheimer to something newly found in the jungle: the wreckage of his Lockheed P-38. It was his last visit to the island. Hargesheimer died on the 23rd of December at 94.

BSP Tennis
The BSP Tennis for Schools programme has been going since May 2009. The current sponsorship package by the bank runs through to the end of 2011. Children from all around the country have been able to participate in tennis. The 2010 year saw 58 schools involved in the BSP Tennis Programme, with a total of 20,884 school children plus 606 teachers taking part.
BSP's Manager, Public Relations & Communications, Rosemary Mawe, said the bank is looking forward to a very positive year as the BSP PNG Regional Community Programme will be taken even further around the provinces.

Oceania Football
The 2011 Oceania Football Confederation under 17 playoffs are being held at the North Harbour Stadium in New Zealand between the 8th and 19th of this month. The overall winner of the OFC U-17 playoffs will earn a spot in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

Marijuana Plants Uprooted
Several young adults in the Kudjip area of the South Wahgi district of Jiwaka Province have pulled up the marijuana plants they have been cultivating and handed them over to the police. Members of the Kudjip based Highway Patrol thanked the youths for their co-operation, saying they had made it easy for police who would have gone into their communities and search for the illegal drugs. Recently police uprooted over 1000 marijuana plants at Aviamp and over the long Christmas weekend they uprooted more at Goli in Kiam village.
Manam Erupts
Over the Christmas period villagers on Manan Island Madang province were threatened by the eruption of the island. The Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO) office has increased the threat level to three. This is interpreted as warning people not to climb to higher ground or walk into or across valleys in case there is a flow of lava.
Manam is a basaltic-andesitic stratovolcano, and despite remarkably symmetrical lower flanks has four distinct valleys, locally known as "avalanche valleys" due to their ability to focus avalanches and particularly pyroclastic flows generated at the summit. -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manam

Tembari Children's Care
AP Engineering Ltd of Kokopo has donated K7,000 to the Tembari Children's Care (TCC). The funds would go towards the building of a 60 sqm multi-purpose hall that will house a classroom, a dirty kitchen and an office.
