Illegal Equipment Impounded

Growood PNG Ltd, a Madang based logging company, has had millions of kina worth of logging equipment impounded for breaching PNG laws. The company was allegedly trying to circumvent Customs laws and evade import duties.

Moti Saga

One of the PNG military forces involved in the escape of Julian Moti from PNG in the middle of the night on the 10th of October 2007 has said "there were more than 10 of us including some top government officials from the PNG Government including Solomon Islands government officials" involved.

Asked how he and his fellow comrades felt carrying out the operation he said "we were just following orders from our commanders which directly came from the top officials within the PNG and Solomon Islands governments".

Somare Takes Leave

The Prime Minster, Michael Somare has taken indefinite medical leave. He says he will vacate his office to take indefinite medical leave and has backed his deputy Sam Abal to stand in for him and perform the functions and responsibilities of the office of the prime minister.

De Facto Organic

Many products grown in PNG can be considered de facto organic simply because the farmers do not have access or the resources to buy any chemicals or pesticides. One such product is the main ingredient in chocolate - cocoa.

80 per cent of the rural PNG population are dependent on cocoa or coffee for their income. Colonists introduced Cocoa into New Guinea in the 19th century.

National Census

The National Census director is hopeful the delayed 2010 census will be carried out in July this year. The last figures were complied in 2000 and are significantly out of date.

NZ - PNG Business Council

A New Zealand business delegation visiting PNG has re-established the New Zealand Port Moresby Business Council and its first action will be to raise funds for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

WWII Airmen Identified

The US Department of Defence POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) has announced that the remains of a serviceman, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and are being returned to his family for burial with full military honours.

Singapore Netball League

Two PNG Pepes players have competed against each other in the recent Singapore Netball League (NSL) grand final. Pepes defender Nisha Omi playing for Nike Marlins faced compatriot, Alurigo Opina for Blaze Dolphins. The NSL is the premier local event for netball in Singapore.

Wafi-Golpu Mine

South African gold major Harmony Gold expects its proposed Wafi-Golpu copper-gold mine to come into production in 2016.

Panguna Mine

An Australian mining company has commented that it confident the controversial Panguna copper mine on Bougainville will reopen within five years.

The Panguna mine, on the island of Bougainville, was the epicentre of a decade-long civil war that left several thousand people dead.

NASCARE

The NASFUND Contributors Savings and Loans Society (NCSL) has recently launched NASCARE. NASCARE is medical and life insurance cover for NCSL members. It provides medical, dental, optical, pharmaceutical, hospital and death benefit for members, their spouses and children in PNG.

Highlands Highway

K16 million has been promised to help fund the upgrade to the Wapenamanda to Wabag section of the Highlands Highway. Acting Prime Minister, Sam Abal, recently announced this in Wabag, Enga province.

OFC U20 Championships

A ten-man Fijian team has held PNG to a scoreless draw in the last match on day one of the OFC U-20 Championship. One of the Fijian players was sent of in the first few minutes of the game after making contact with the face of PNG Goalkeeper Jacob Senat.

Tribal Fighting

It is believed as many as 11 people have been shot dead in a tribal fight in the Southern Highlands' Kagua-Erave district. Provincial police commander, Teddy Tei, has organised for 15 policemen to accompany a provincial peace mediation team to Kagua. He has appealed to the tribal leaders of the warring tribes to encourage their people to lay down their arms and work closely with the police and mediation team to restore peace.

Pirated Solomon Islands Music

Asian shops around PNG are reportedly making big money out of pirated music and video clips from Solomon Islands. It is suspected the music is being smuggled from the Solomon Islands through Bougainville to Port Moresby.

South Bougainville Troubles

The National newspaper reports that civilians in the Konnou constituency of South Bougainville are living in fear as armed thugs continue a killing spree that has been ongoing since 2006.

Air Niugini Crocs

The Air Niugini Crocs PNG Cricket Team will be taking part in the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia. The games are played from the 8th to the 13th of May. Former PNG national player Toka Gaudi who was the best-performed coach in last years Cricket PNG National Championship will coach the Team.

Air Niugini

The National Airline, Air Niugini, has taken delivery of another Boeing B767 aircraft. Air Niugini pilots flew P2-PXW, leased from Icelandair, from Guangzhou, China, to Port Moresby. Air Niugini now plans to retire the existing Boeing B757 aircraft that helped the airline build capacity since late 2008. Air Niugini now has three 767 aircraft in its fleet and a total of 21 aircraft serving routes in PNG and overseas.

Airlines PNG

Airlines PNG (APNG) will soon expand its fleet with the addition of a De Havilland DH8-100 (Dash 8) aircraft. The aircraft will be delivered later this month and will bring the total Dash 8 fleet to 12. APNG also has 10 Twin Otter (Dash 6) aircraft. APNG flies contract charters for almost every major resource company in the country and is Exxon Mobil's exclusive fixed wing charter airline for the PNG LNG programme.





Pilot Escapes Mishap

A pilot has managed to land after clipping power lines at Kagamuga airport just outside Mt Hagen in the Western Highlands province. The single engine plane sustained minor damage, the expatriate pilot was in shock, but otherwise he was okay.

Walk Against Corruption

Transparency International (PNG) Inc (TIPNG) is hosting the annual Walk Against Corruption on Sunday the 12th of June 2011 at Jack Pidik Park, 5 Mile in Port Moresby. -- 5:00 am arrival for 6:00 am start. The Walk Against Coruption will also be hosted in Kokopo, Kimbe, Alotau and Madang.

The purpose of the Walk is twofold. Firstly, it extends greater awareness about corruption and allows people to express their opposition to this scourge. Secondly it raises money for the Siaguru Endowment Fund, which was established to financially secure the operational future of the TIPNG over the long term in pursuit of its work in the fight against corruption. The fund was established to honour the Founding Chairman, the late Sir Anthony Siaguru.
