History Repeats
In 1973 the National Airline was flying to Bulolo in Morobe province and now Air Niugini, using a Dash 8 100 aircraft, is again flying to Bulolo airport from Port Moresby. The Air Niugini service will operate every Monday and Friday. The Mining Town of Bulolo was Papua New Guinea's first major urban settlement.

New Lae School
Australian and United States military engineers have been putting the final touches to a newly improved school and water system in Lae. They've constructed new classrooms for Bubia Primary School that will house about 60 students.

BSP Declares Dividend
Bank South Pacific (BSP) has declared a final dividend and share consolidation for 2010 at its annual meeting for shareholders. The board of directors declared a final dividend profit of 3.135 toea per share.

Nationwide Microbank
The PNG Nationwide Microbank has reached a major milestone. The bank has signed its 100,000th customer who is a 49-year-old widow and mother of four that operates a small coffee garden about two hours by road from Goroka, the Eastern Highlands provincial capital.
The bank has been operating going since 2004 now with the support of the Asian Development Bank.

Milne Bay Reef Study
A study has been made by an international team co-led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, of three coral reefs near Papua New Guinea which are bathed in bubbles of carbon dioxide from volcanic vents. The results suggest the diversity and resilience of coral reef ecosystems will be severely reduced as the pH of oceans declines, due to rising carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

Rural Health
A health official says the millions of foreign aid dollars being poured into the health sector are being misdirected. The director of PNG's National AIDS Council Secretariat, Wep Kanawi, says while there has been significant improvements in dealing with infectious diseases and mortality rates, resources are not being channelled effectively into rural areas.

The embattled PNG Health Department has taken a step back in its administering of funds from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).

Airlines PNG
From the 14th of June this year Airlines PNG will expand its network. Madang will benefit from daily flights ex Lae plus connections to Port Moresby and overseas. Mt Hagen ex Port Moresby will now see up to 12 flights per week.

Truck Ban
Heavy vehicles were recently banned for a short period from the Poreporena freeway in Port Moresby after yet another crash. The section of the road at the bottom of Burns Peak on the town side has become known by Port Moresby residents as the "deadman's corner". Aussie Surgery for Goroka Girl
Thanks to the Children First Foundation Elvin Kumuli from Goroka has undergone open-heart surgery at Epworth Hospital in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Ms Kumuli was diagnosed with Fallot's Tetralogy, a condition that left her gasping for breath after even the shortest exercise. She could not walk more than 20m without discomfort because not enough blood could reach her lungs to get oxygen.

Mining Boom Riches
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is expected to propel the country's economic growth rate to a robust eight per cent this year. The project, led by US energy giant Exxon Mobil, is the largest investment scheme in PNG's history.
Gold, oil, copper and other mineral deposits account for nearly two-thirds of the country's export earnings. It is estimated that reserves of natural gas amount to more than 225 billion cubic metres.

Smoke Ban
A smoking ban in Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) is scheduled to come into effect at the start of 2012 but the Land Transport Department say the no smoke ban in public transport has been in place for a long time and they will go ahead and fine people caught smoking in PMVs. Smoking has been banned on aeroplanes for many years.
The penalty for smoking inside a PMVs is an on the spot fine of K500 or the smoker can be referred to the police and then charged under the Motor Traffic Act Regulation.
Milne Bay Cricket
The Grand Final of the Milne Bay Dulux Regional Championship has been played in Alotau with regional champions being crowned in the Men's, Women's Championship and a Local Junior competition.

July Census
The government is reported as saying the preparation for the 2011 National Population census in July is progressing well. The govt hopes to be able to count every living person in PNG and have the main count commenced on the night of 10th and ended by the 17th of July. The census has already been delayed by a year due to a lack of government funding and support.
Radiation Monitor
The Mining Minister, John Pundari, has presented a cheque for K61,720 to the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) to begin initial work on the establishment of a radiation monitoring facility. Once the facility is established it will be able to gather baseline data on ambient levels of background radiation in an attempt to monitor possible fallout from man-made and natural sources of radiation.

Angoram High School
Two classrooms have been gutted by fire at the Angoram High School in East Sepik. The provincial police commander has been reported as saying a suspect had been detained and was being questioned at the Wewak police station.

Australia Destroys Illegal Boats
The Australian Department of Immigration has destroyed the boats used by around 130 people who sailed from PNG to Australia in December claiming Australian citizenship. The department says destroying the boats is a warning to PNG citizens not to try to enter Australia illegally.
