Policeman Charged With Rape
A policeman in Port Moresby has been charged with rape after an alleged attack on an Australian murder suspect in police custody at the police cells in Boroko.

Kite Surfer Bitten
A kite surfer has been bitten by a shark on a reef at Hula, south of Port Moresby. The French diplomat working for the European Union has been airlifted to Australia for treatment.

Softball Championships
The InterOil National Softball Championships will be held in Port Moresby later this month. Air Niugini has come to the party and allowed competitors travelling from the provinces a 30 per cent discount on airfares. The PNG Softball Federation (PNGSF) has thanked Air Niugini executive management for their generous support to sport.
Parliament Ousts Somare
Jeffery Nape, the Speaker of Parliament, has announced Sir Michael Somare did not have leave to be absent from parliament for five months. The Speaker said the seat automatically became vacant under Section 104, Sub-section 2 (d) of the Constitution.

PNG Inflation
Higher prices have significantly increased inflation in 2008, 2010 and 2011. BPNG Governor Loi Bakani told the Food Security Policy conference that headline inflation has trended slightly above developing countries as a whole, while PNG's trimmed mean inflation which excludes the most volatile components such as betelnut has trended very closely to other developing economies over the last two years.

Building Education Resources
A teacher at St Mary's Catholic College, Woree in Cairns, Australia, is dedicated to building education resources for students in PNG. In 2007 Harry Graepel identified a need for libraries in schools on some of the most remote islands of Milne Bay Province. Since then he has worked tirelessly to gather and deliver tens of thousands of books and educational resources to those schools.

Gang Leader Shot Dead
One of PNG's most wanted criminals has been killed in a gunfight in the country's highlands. PNG police have repelled looters in Kainantu who were believed to be accomplices of slain gang leader Patrick Sirah.

Literacy Rate
A recent survey conducted in five provinces, compiled in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Basic Advocacy Education (ASPBAE) Australia, an NGO, found that 70 per cent of people claimed they were literate however a large number of Papua New Guineans are not able to read and write. The survey shows the literacy rates in four of the five provinces surveyed to be less than 15 per cent with the fifth, New Ireland, having 25 per cent, but this too is far below the national average of 1990s literacy rate which was 52 per cent
Oceania Women's Football
The PNG Women's Football team has beaten host nation New Caledonia 2-1 in front of a packed Numa Daly stadium. It was only in the final dying moments of the game that PNG was able to score from a penalty beating the 1 - 1 possible draw and 30 minutes of extra time.
Seized Items For Sale
Customs will soon sell seized vessels caught coming into the country without correct paperwork. Investigations by customs officials revealed that two barges and two tugs and the goods on them were imported in breach of the Customs Act. Goods seized recently would be auctioned shortly and advertised in the media.

Q - Where is PNG rated in World Netball?
A - In 2008, when this question was first asked. PNG was rated 14th in the world out of 22 nations.
The latest list has been updated on 26th July 2011 and includes matches up to 10th July 2011 where PNG is rated as number 17 in the world out of 25 nations.

BSP ATMs
The people of Kundiawa now have access to a total of five ATMs after BSP installed two new machines in the town. BSP now has a total of 210 ATMs around the country and hopes to expand this to 250 ATMs nationwide by the end of the year. BSP are currently installing more ATMs in Goroka, Kainantu, Mt Hagen, Wabag, Mendi, Kokopo, Rabaul, Lae and Port Moresby. Other sites are also planned for Kimbe, Bialla, Kavieng and Tabubil.
Tree Destroys Classroom
A tree has destroyed a classroom at Kila Kila Primary School. The Headmaster said lack of funds had stopped the school from chopping down trees.

El Maniel International Inc has successfully established a local subsidiary in PNG known as PNG Gold Resources Limited. The local subsidiary focuses on developing El Maniel's gold business domain in PNG.
PAU Internet Upgrade
Pactel International has been awarded a major contract for providing satellite Internet services to the Port Moresby campus of the Pacific Adventist University, a leading provider of tertiary education in PNG and the Pacific Islands.

Tahiti was second with 59 gold, 32 silver and 42 bronze medals.
PNG was third with 49 gold, 24 silver and 48 bronze medals.

Homebrew in Chimbu
Chimbu provincial police commander has claimed 25 per cent of young girls and women in the province drink homebrew. He said many people turned to homebrew because it was cheap and made them drunk faster. He said marijuana was now becoming a major problem in South and Upper Chimbu. Maternal Mortality Rate
Despite the national government's medium-term development strategy to reduce the maternal mortality rate by 75 per cent by 2015 the World Health Organisation says this was unlikely because the rate had doubled.

Robbery Trial Begins
The nine people accused of robbing the Kerema branch of the BSP in May 2008 are currently in court on trial for the robbery. One of the accused is William Nanua Kapris currently in jail for rape and attempted murder until November 2012 however he has an additional four years to serve for escaping from Bomana just outside Port Moresby in 2008 and again in 2010.
