Looting Costing Millions
The looting of trucks along the Highlands Highway is costing millions of Kina a year. The managing director of Mt Hagen-based grocery wholesaler Dae Won Trading Limited said there had been a marked increase in the looting of containers on the Highway from Lae to Mt Hagen, especially at Daulo Pass, in the Eastern Highlands and Tumun in Chimbu.

Lutheran University Donation
The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has presented a cheque for K2 million towards the building of the Lutheran University and another K4 million would be made available by the government in November or December this year.
National Capital Bus Service
A new bus service is being introduced in Port Moresby following the recent signing of a contract between the National Capital District Commission and local company, 15-Mile Smash Repair Ltd. The company said it would use buses on routes not served by the current bus services (PMV's). The company will use 11 buses each with a capacity to carry up to 70 people to cover the planned routes.

Different Treks
Many people want to walk the Kokoda Track and that is fine if you are in very good physical condition and can pass a relevant medical but there are other easier wartime treks for those who may not be up to the challenge of Kokoda. One such trek retraces the Lark Force's desperate escape from the Japanese occupation on the island of New Britain during the Second World War.

Poultry Management
Anton Kaupa Morua, PNG poultry manager the Christian Leaders Training College (CLTC -- http://www.cltc.ac.pg/) at Banz Campus, Mount Hagen, is undertaking an eight-week South Australian Crawford Fund traineeship at SARDI's Poultry Production Unit at Roseworthy Campus.

Travel Air
New low cost domestic airline, Travel Air, has taking delivery of two Fokker 50 aircraft out of a planned four to be based in Madang waiting for the launch of services by the airline. Travel Air is also planning to operate two Fokker 50 cargo planes from a separate base at Lae and is reported to be interested in acquiring single examples of both the 19-seat DHC-6 Twin Otter and 112-seat BAe RJ85.

Samaritan Aviation
Samaritan Aviation offers a unique solution to what, in the past, was often a three to five day trek through rough jungle tracks and along long, winding rivers. Since 2010 they have utilized a small amphibious Cessna, called the "Spirit of Paradise", to land on the Sepik River and it's tributaries picking up woman in obstructed labour, children with snakebites and all other manner of medical emergencies. Then flying them to Wewak hospital on the coast for treatment.

Unions Oppose Airline Merger
Four Air Niugini Unions - National Airlines Employees Association, National Air Pilots Union, Flights Attendants Association and Aircraft Engineers Association all strongly oppose the idea of a merger with Airlines PNG. One of the unions - the National Airlines Employees Association says it believes the merger will displace local employees and not do any good.

The government recently gave in-principle support to a merger state-owned Air Niugini with the publicly listed Airlines PNG. The merger would make it one of the biggest airlines in the South Pacific Islands region.

Skipper's Body Found
Police say the body of a sailor found washed up on the isolated Purdy group of islands in Manus province has been identified as the skipper of the boat that went missing in August while carrying scientists from the Goroka based PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR). The Manus Provincial Police Commander says a relative of the deceased has confirmed the identity of the body.
Vale Utula Samana & Hami Yawari
Former politician Utula Samana has passed away on the 2nd of October at his 6-Mile home just outside Lae, Morobe province.

Canoe and Kundu Festival
Canoes and the Kundu drums are a significant aspect of the lives of the people of Milne Bay. Both the Canoe and the Kundu were widely used in olden times in ceremonies and rituals and were meticulously crafted from special woods under strict customs, to derive the best results and to appease the gods.

50 Days in Government
The first 50 days of the O'Neill - Namah government have seen reforms take off, including decisive action being taken to tackle corruption, public enterprises being cleaned up, and an 800 million kina (US$362 million) supplementary budget passed focusing on free education and infrastructure.

Callers to the FM 100 radio talk back program have described the Australian government's stringent immigration and visa application processing policies as being racist. Callers expressed frustration and anger over the strict policies that have denied some Papua New Guineans from travelling to Australia for holidays, study or to visit friends.
