Many remote airstrips are not much better than the bush tracks leading to them. A Twin Otter (P2-MCZ) operated by Airlines PNG recently came to grief while attempting to land at the Sasereme airstrip several kilometres away from Balimo in Western province. The damage to the runway was not visible from the air when the plane overflew the strip looking for irregularities before landing. The plane suffered minor damage after bursting a tyre crossing a concealed hole in the runway. APNG hope to be able to repair the damage quickly and have the plane underway as soon as the airstrip damage is repaired.
