PNG Earthquakes

Earthquakes happen on a regular basis in PNG fortunately often only with minor effects being felt. If you are at all interested you can visit -- http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ -- This site, maintained by the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, will show you the most recent ones around the world. On an initial visit you will be presented with a map of the world but you can drill down to show just Papua New Guinea if you want to.





Royal Tour

Details of a tour by the future British King, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, have been released. The couple will spend two nights in and around Port Moresby. The pair will visit nine cities in less than a fortnight during a tour of PNG, Australia and New Zealand. Charles will celebrate his 64th birthday in Wellington on the 14th of November.

BSP Go Green

InterOil as a responsible corporate citizen with a commitment to the environment and has thrown its support behind BSP's Annual Clean Up Days in Lae by providing 200 litres of fuel for contractors trucks to collect rubbish after the recent clean up.

The Annual School Clean Up Day was held on the 21st of September and the Community Clean Up day was on the following day. This is the third year running, BSP has organised the nationwide event. The theme for this year was "Don't dump it, Bin It".

Lutheran Women's Conference

Bulolo in Morobe province is currently hosting the Evangelical Lutheran church of Papua New Guinea's biannual national women's conference. Each of the 19 church districts around the country were expected to send participants. The host district, Yabim, had prepared well for the event.





Lihir Capacity Reduction

Newcrest's Lihir operation has temporarily reduced production to approximately 25% of plant capacity due to an issue with the electrical system in the main oxygen plant. The oxygen plant supplies oxygen to the autoclaves to facilitate the pressure oxidation process which enables gold recovery from the ore feed.

Election Petitions

Eighty-three MPs in the 111 seat PNG Parliament all face challenges in the Court of Disputed Returns. A total of 105 election petitions have been filed so far.

80 regional ballot boxes in Jiwaka province have been burnt. Losing candidate Jamie Maxtone-Graham was disputing his loss in the courts.





ADB Report

Air Niugini has expressed its disappointment with an Asian Development Bank’s report on state-owned entities in PNG. The airline says it was never involved in any discussions with ADB to get proper information. Other organisations have expressed similar concerns about the report.

Marine Industrial Zone

The K800 million (US$374.8 million) Pacific Marine Industrial Zone (PMIZ) or Marine Park as it is known in Madang will bring huge benefits to the locals especially the communities.

Manus Detention Centre

A group of landowners on Manus Island ar demanding AUD 45-million before an Australian processing centre for asylum seekers is built. The PNG government has agreed to Australia's proposal to build a processing centre and and Australian troops arrived on the island this week to start work. The landowners say the compensation would be used to set up local companies to provide services like transport, security and catering to the new centre. Most of the land in PNG is controlled by traditional landowners, allowing them to wield considerable power.

Orders of PNG

Nominations have been called for the 2013 Orders of PNG New Year's and Queen's Birthday Honours. The Orders of PNG awards are made each year on New Year's Day and Independence Day. Awards under the Imperial Honours are announced on the Queen's official birthday holiday in June.





Purse Seiners Ban

After Australia's ban on a super trawler fishing vessel fishing in Australian waters a PNG MP wants to ban all purse seiners from fishing in PNG's waters, be they super or not.

2013 Mateship Trek

Young Canterbury-Bankstown residents are being encouraged to travel the Black Cat Track in PNG as part of the 2013 Mateship Trek during the Anzac Day period in April. The program brings together a group of young people to walk in the footsteps of Australian soldiers.





PM's XIII scrape past PNG

Australia's Prime Minister's XIII scored a late try in the 76th minute by Knights winger Akuila Uate to score a tight 24-18 victory over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby. Those not at the game were able to receive tweets from Skerah giving almost a blow by blow description of the game.

Southern Highlands Flooding

Flooding in the Southern Highlands is now under control. The manager of the National Disaster Office says the Government has heeded calls and has released 500 thousand Kina through the National Disaster Centre for the most affected communities in the four provinces of Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Southern Highlands and Gulf.
