School Subsidies

Schools in Mt Hagen that do not have a Bank South Pacific (BSP) account have complained that they are yet to receive the second quarter of the government’s education subsidy, The National reports. Thomas Kop, the chairman of the Tega Primary School in Mt Hagen has come out stating that this is affecting the daily operations of the school.

PNG Debt

Treasury Minister Don Polye has said PNG's and foreign debt stands at K7 billion. Polye also said the Department of Treasury is now reviewing the country's debt management strategy to maintain it at a manageable level.

Homeless

A study by the Salvation Army has revealed there are more than 2,200 homeless men, women and children struggling to survive on the streets of Port Moresby each day. From a survey that was conducted in Boroko, Waigani, 4-Mile, Ela Beach and the central business district (over March and April), it was estimated that there are about 900 adults and 1,350 children living on the streets of Port Moresby.

Run for Friendship

Two hundred runners, 100 each from Indonesia and PNG, recently ran from Wutung to Skouw in the International Cross Border 10K run. Heavy rain did not affect the participants who kept in high spirits throughout the race. The event was dominated by male runners with only eight of the 200 participants being female.

The cross border race was the first of its kind held between the two neighbouring countries and was made possible thanks to cooperation between the Indonesian Papua province administration and the PNG Sandaun provincial administration.

Key Airstrip Closed

Simbai Airstrip in the highlands of Papua New Guinea's Madang Province, is closed and this has isolated the local communities who are dependent on air travel.

Air Niugini

The Air New Zealand Aviation Institute has signed an agreement to provide EASA Basic Aircraft Maintenance and on job training to Air Niugini for the next 10 years. The first intake of 12 Air Niugini trainees recently began the four year program, which will consist of an Approved EASA 147 Basic Maintenance course in the first two years, followed by two further years of on-job training with Air New Zealand Technical Operations and Air Nelson Technical Operations, both Part 145 approved organisations.

Betel Nut

The selling of BetelNut around the country is a profitable business. Officially, it is not a recognised business entity as it operates outside of government regulation and has no known organisational structure. However, in essence, a multi-million kina business operating in isolation and ignorance of taxation laws and unshackled by the requirements of running a formal business in the country.

World Vision

The director of World Vision, Curt von Boguslawski, has said World Vision is not leaving PNG and the organisation would continue to support the national tuberculosis programme until next March and beyond if funding was provided by the Health Department or other donors. Rumours had spread that it was winding up its involvement in the TB programme in the country.





China Loan

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says a $A2.8 billion loan from China will greatly improve infrastructure in the country, dismissing criticism that the loan is too big to be repaid. "(The loan) sounds large but the drawdown will not be in one single year," he said.

The loan has been defended by PNG's Works Minister Francis Awesa. He says it will be used to rebuild the country's economic life line-the deteriorating Highlands Highway, which connects the coastal port of Lae and the heavily populated Highlands region, plus other important infrastructure like wharves, jetties etc.

Books to PNG

St Agnes Matraville, St Bernard's Botany and OLSH Randwick primary schools in New South Wales have filled a six-metre shipping container with a thousand books and pieces of furniture to send to school children in PNG.

Possible New Flights to PNG

Southeast Asian Airlines, Inc. (SEAir) has asked the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) for a permit and seat allocations for flights to Papua New Guinea, a letter by the carrier to the regulator showed. SEAir said it planned to offer flights to Port Moresby from Manila, Clark and Cebu. SEAir has asked for 1,800 seats per week each for the three routes. Other Philippines airlines that already have rights to fly to PNG are Philippine Airlines, AirPhil Express (to be renamed PAL Express), Cebu Pacific and Zest Air.

BAHA

OK Tedi Ltd has made a payment of K200,000 to BAHA for its 5th year of Sponsorship as part of its ongoing support toward HIV prevention and support response in the private sector. Mr. Musje Werror, the OK Tedi General Manager for Government and External Relations when handing the cheque over to BAHA, acknowledged the work of BAHA in ensuring education and training of workers in PNG on HIV & AIDS and related issues and commended BAHA on reaching out to the rural business sectors out in the provinces.

BAHA is a non-profit organisation representing the private sectors effort to address HIV & AIDS in the country.

Engan Peace

After 15 years of intense warfare, Enga society recently gave peace a fighting chance. Outdoor village courts, which had formerly settled local disputes, resolved many bloody conflicts between Enga clans by determining how much communities should compensate one another for murders and other offenses.

Village courts were established in 1974 to rule on local disputes and expanded in 1982 to handle clan conflicts.

Palau Receives Money From PNG

Palau has received payment of 750,000 US dollars from PNG for additional fishing days under the Parties to the Nauru Agreement.

Child Mortality

In PNG more than five women die every day during childbirth. By 1982, according to Charles Darwin University, most villages were within a two-hour walk of health care so the child mortality rate dropped from 20 per cent in 1960 to 11 per cent. But in the last 30 years this rate has started to climb again.

58 out of every 1000 PNG children will die before reaching school age, compared with five in Australia. The children die from preventable illness such as diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia. They also die of measles - when a $1 vaccine could have protected them.

PNG to Australia

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has called on Australia to offer easier access to Australian visas for citizens of PNG. He told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program Papua New Guineans deserve the option of visas on arrival, to match the arrangements his country offers Australians.

Popondetta Yeast

Bakers od bread and other products that require yeast in Popondetta are finding it hard to find ingredients. The administrator in Oro province, Owen Awaita, says due to a surge in the production of homebrewed alcohol and the increase in associated violence the sale of yeast has been restricted to bakeries and then it will be under very, very strict control. It will be managed by the top management so that they don't let it land in the wrong hands.
