Manus Island

Australian Immigration Minister Brendan O'Connor has rejected claims from a former staff member that the Manus Island Asylum Centre was a "disaster". The Minister did concede that the medical facilities at the centre were lacking when it was first set up, but he says the facilities have since improved.

The executive director of the Centre for Environmental Law and Community Rights has objected to the idea of another palm oil producer establishing itself in the country.

PNG Power

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the PNG Government have signed two loans that will help boost electricity access rates in Port Moresby to 74 per cent and extend the city's power grid to an estimated 3,000 low-income households. The loans were signed at ADB's 46th Annual Meeting in New Delhi, India.

Rape Suspects Arrested

PNG Police have arrested and charged four men over the gang rape of an American woman. The men were arrested during a recent dawn raid on a village on Karkar Island off PNG's north coast.

Chikungunya Virus

A mosquito-borne virus called Chikungunya is continuing to spread around the country. The virus was first detected in Sandaun province last June and has now been reported in Madang, West New Britain, East New Britain, Morobe and Eastern Highlands. The mosquitoes that spread Chikungunya are the "day-biting" kind, and are also known to transmit dengue fever.

PNG will host the Pacific Islands conference of leaders next year which Prime Minister Peter O'Neill chairs. O'Neill yesterday met the president of the East-West Centre based in Hawaii, Dr Charles Morrison, in Port Moresby to discuss the leaders meeting in 2014.

Newcastle Disease

The PNG Government has declared Sandaun or West Sepik province "a disease area" following the detection of the contagious Newcastle bird disease in the PNG-Indonesia border villages of Wutung and Musu and the provincial capital Vanimo.

Landowners of the Panguna Mine in Central Bougainville have reaffirmed their stand that they want the mine to be reopened. The assurance was delivered by an executive member of the United Panguna Mine Affected Landowners Association.

Aussie Touring Cars Masters

PNG is being represented in the Australian Touring Car Masters Championship by driver Keith Kassulke. Keith flies in from PNG for the events. Kassulke is supported by Air Niugini. The championship showcases Australia's best touring cars from the pre-1976 era.

New Zealand army engineers are to help the Papua New Guinea Defence Force to build a new road connecting the coastal city of Madang with Mt Hagen in Western Highlands.

ENB Library

Former prime minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu and Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar have put their support behind the call for a public library in East New Britain. Sir Rabbie has reminded the province's parliamentarians that a public library is an important institution. He said since the volcanic disruption of Rabaul town there a library is yet to be built and is optimistic the ENB provincial government and relevant bodies have plans in place for a replacement.

Aussie Prime Minister Julia Gillard is set to visit PNG this week. She is expected to arrive on Thursday and return to Australia on Saturday.

Maprik Water Supply

A Chinese-built state-of-the-art water pumping system has been implemented in Maprik. The system pumps a total of 1000 litres of water per second from a river near the Maprik health centre into an 80-metre water pipe that contacts to a 500,000 litre tank located at the water treatment plant site facility. The system supplies about 6000 residents of the town.

Nauru Students Pulled Out

Five students from Nauru have been pulled out of the University of Goroka by the Nauru Government amid concerns protests there could escalate. The five Nauruan students had been taking secondary teacher training courses on scholarships provided by AusAID.
