Reconciliation Ceremony

An official reconciliation ceremony has taken place in Port Moresby between PNG's Prime Minister and the President of the Autonomous Government of Bougainville.


Emergency Services Directory

For the first time, a national directory of emergency services for victims of domestic and sexual violence has become available in Papua New Guinea.

Transparency International has called on the Central Tenders and Supply Board to tell the truth and prove them wrong on the awarding of the contract to Borneo Pacific to supply medical drugs in the country.


Vale Dr Joe Pagelio

Educational administrator, Dr Joseph Pagelio, who served the PNG Education Department for more than 30 years, including four years as Secretary for Education, died recently after a short illness.


InterOil to Start Drilling

Oil and gas company, InterOil Corporation, announced that it will shortly begin drilling the first of up to eight wells in Gulf province as part of a US$325 million (K816 million) drilling program.

Panguna Visit by PM

The proposed visit by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea to the Mekamui (sacred land) of Panguna should be condemned by all parties. No PNG Prime Minister should ever be allowed to Panguna until there is justice for the lives of 20,000 Bougainvillean lives lost during state-sponsored violence on the island.

Opposition Leader Being Gagged?

The PNG opposition leader says an attempt by the police to arrest him at the weekend was part of a plan to gag him amidst a probe into illegal payments to a law firm. Belden Namah avoided arrest when the national court awarded his lawyer a stay on an arrest order by the police commissioner Tom Kulunga, for allegedly issuing a threat to him.


Colonel Toropo Reaffirmed

Defence Minister Fabian Pok Wednesday reaffirmed the appointment of Colonel Gilbert Toropo as the Commander of the PNG Defence force following the National Executive Council decision of 14 January this year. He said he would advise Col Gilbert Toropo to issue directives to prevent soldiers from associating with politicians in order to improve the image of the force and maintain peace and stability.


Year in Review

With 13 consecutive years of growth under its belt, Papua New Guinea (PNG) is gearing up for the next phase in its economic development, which is set to be largely defined by the country's new role as an exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

National Fisheries Authority

The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has made K10 million available to two Micro Bank Institutions. NFA signed the agreement with Nationwide Micro Bank and PNG Microfinance Limited for a credit facility for the fisheries sector.

Lae-based food manufacturer Prima Smallgoods has recently completed a K40 million (US$15.82 million) upgrade to its manufacturing facilities.



Alcatel-Lucent and Interchange, a Vanuatu-based company, is to deliver ultra-broadband connectivity linking Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. New undersea cable system spanning more than 3000km will reduce the digital divide in the Pacific and builds on the start of commercial service on the Vanuatu-Fiji system


Sorcery Hinders Work

Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar says sorcery, blamed as a hindrance to development in East New Britain, is not unique to PNG. He said sorcery and witchcraft were practised in other countries including Australia.


EOD Iceman Saves Life

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Riemer, 354th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal technician recently saved a stab victim's life outside a hotel in PNG. "The man had been stabbed three times," Riemer explained, "once through the right tricep and twice in the inner left thigh." According to the hotel management report from the doctor, the victim would have died without Riemer's diligent actions to save his life.


Police Brutality

The failure of PNG's government to address longstanding police brutality led to further abuses against criminal suspects and others in 2013, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2014. Domestic violence and other attacks on women, including on women accused of sorcery, remain rampant. Human Rights Watch reviews human rights practices in more than 90 countries.

PNG's little master, Lega Siaka, has single handily smashed Namibia's attack taking PNG into the Super Six. An innings of 112 from 82 deliveries including 9 fours and 7 sixes. PNG passed Namibia's 163 with the loss of 2 wickets.

Hull Kingston Rovers have released Papua New Guinea international duo Enoch Maki and Francis Paniu from their contracts with immediate effect due to the pair not being granted a visa.


PNG Hunters' Trial

It is only a trial game but that won't stop double the average Northern Pride home crowd from flocking to Barlow Park on February 9, such is the excitement of the PNG Hunters' arrival in the Intrust Super Cup.


Betel Nut Licences

Powes Parkop, the Governor of the National Capital District says he is considering introducing licences for betel nut vendors. The Governor says he hopes to roll out a system to regulate the sale of betel nut in Port Moresby in about six months' time.


Mr Parkop says he is also contemplating how to further regulate alcohol sales to crack down on drunk and disorderly behaviour.
