Flexible Open Distance Education

Questions are now raised on how a privately owned Flexible learning institution has been operating in a government premises in Lae. Sources who wished to remain anonymous, want the Provincial Government to clarify this. They said, the institution is not part of the Lae Community College, or the Flexible Open Distance Education centre.

Pacific Games

The Organising Committee for next year's Pacific Games in Port Moresby are confident there will be no further budget blowouts. PNG were awarded the hosting rights in 2009 but delays early in the process saw construction and planning fall close to two years behind schedule.

Human Trafficking

Domestic servitude, forced labour and sexual slavery or forced prostitution are most common and serious forms of exploitation of human trafficking in PNG. These forms of human trafficking may not be seen as serious because they are also entwined in PNG's cultures, for instance; forced marriages and domestic servitude.

Illegal Logging

Corruption, weak governance, and powerful timber barons are illegally stripping the forests of Papua New Guinea, according to a new report from the Chatham House. The policy institute finds that 70 percent of logging in PNG is currently illegal, despite the fact that 99 percent of land is owned by local indigenous communities.

PNG Ministers Criticised

There has been criticism of a push by two ministers to deport the executive director of the PNG Institute of National Affairs, Paul Barker. The Post Courier reports the National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop, and the Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Mao Zeming, want him out of PNG.

First Missionaries Honoured

Catholics in PNG honoured the evangelisation, 80 years ago, of the remote interior of the nation's main island by making a pilgrimage in the steps of its first missionaries. "After 80 years, the Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese of Mount Hagen felt it is time to say thank you and to acknowledge all the blessings from God through the missionaries," said Paul Petrus, a social researcher and a layman of PNG.

Newcrest Axes Jobs

Newcrest Mining at Lihir Island in New Ireland province has axed over 200 jobs. The decision has come along with a host of other cost cutting measures by the company. The Melbourne-based gold miner, one of the world's biggest, said it cut 208 jobs across a range of roles at its Lihir site from January to March. Newcrest said it also eliminated another 32 vacant roles at the site, its most expensive to operate.

Taskforce Sweep: New Allegations

Member for Komo Margarime, Francis Potape, was set to appear at the Waigani National Court on the 25th of April for paying himself K60,000 as sitting allowance while chairman of Komo Margarima Joint District Priority and Budget Priority Committee.

Rouna 2 Clean-up

PNG Power Chief Executive Officer Chris Bais, said a recent shut-down at Rouna 2 Power station just outside Port Moresby was mainly to remove debris. Water was totally drained out of the pond to allow PNG Power Employees to safely access the screens for cleaning and after four hours of thorough clean-up, the generators and water supply was restored.

Opposition Leader Belden Namah has slammed the media for not publishing issues raised by him and says from now onwards he will take issues against the government to the streets. He named the Post Courier, The National and EMTV as not carrying his stories and giving issues very little time on air.

NCD Referral Hospital

The St John's Gerehu District hospital will soon be given referral hospital status for the National Capital District. Serving 500-600 patients daily, the hospital last year treated an accumulative 625,000 patients on record.

BSP Aims to Expand

Despite the challenges in the country, Bank South Pacific remains the leading commercial bank in the country and region and aims to expand its foreign investments, a bank official says. Business development and asset finance head Jodi Herbert said as part of its recent major developments, the bank committed K100 million (US$36.14 million) as working capital for a leading mining company.

Better Oil and Gas Management

PNG and the United States both have huge natural resource endowments and face difficult challenges in managing those resources wisely, particularly in areas where communities manage land resources in common. Both nations have recently applied to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, an international effort to "follow the money" that is being spent and used in the extractive sectors.

Sorcery Attack

PNG police have detained 180 people after a witch hunt that left six people dead, including two children. Witnesses say one man killed was an innocent bystander on his way to work, while two children under the age of five were also reportedly killed.

LNG Export

PNG will join the top 10 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exporting countries in seventh place when the first shipment of LNG is exported around mid-year. In 2013 Japan, with an import total of 87.8 million tonnes per annum, was the largest buyer of LNG.

Governor Calls for End to SABLs

A former governor of Papua New Guinea's East New Britain province, Francis Koimanrea, has urged the government to scrap the controversial Special Agricultural Business Lease system. Under the SABL concept, over 70 long term land leases around PNG have been issued on behalf of landowners to foreign investors purportedly for agriculture projects but in effect mainly for logging.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says controversial land leases abused by the timber industry will be cancelled. Mr O'Neill said all Special Agricultural and Business Leases, or SABLs, are under review and that those abused for forestry will be revoked.
