Vale Dennis Bebego

Dennis Bebego, former ambassador to Japan and now director general of the protocol division at the Foreign Affairs and Trade Department, was slashed to death recently while at work.

There will be a public memorial service for him at St Martin's Boroko in Port Moresby on Friday the 18th at 12 noon, then a Requiem at St John's Cathedral for close friends and family on Saturday the 19th at 12 noon. His body will be flown over to Gona for burial on Sunday the 20th.

He leaves three children in their twenties: Shane, Kimberley and Jonathan. Dennis was a member of the Anglican Church Provincial Council.

PNG's former attorney-general, Kerenga Kua, says Peter O'Neill's attempt to explain a crucial letter in a corruption case undermines the prime minister's later claim that the letter was forged.

Crater Gold Mining

Crater Gold Mining should trade higher after reporting smooth progress towards first gold production from the High Grade Zone project at its Crater Mountain project in PNG. Crater Gold had in May estimated first year production at 10,000 ounces per annum at a cash cost of US$394 per ounce.

2014 Melanesian Festival of Arts

The 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture, which ended recently in Port Moresby, was an "international embarrassment" for PNG, Sports and Pacific Games Minister Justin Tkatchenko says.

Sains Signs MoA

PNG is looking into adopting Sarawak's successful e-Government solutions for its Central province through Sarawak Information Systems (Sains). Sains chief executive officer Dato Teo Tien Hiong disclosed that Sains will be carrying out a feasibility study for Central province and recommend a way forward towards implementing the same model that has transformed Sarawak into one of the top states in Malaysia utilising IT for the past 23 years.

Wahoo-1 Well

InterOil Corporation has suspended the Wahoo-1 well in PPL474 in PNG after intersecting gas and higher-than-expected pressures that could compromise rig safety.

The Wahoo-1 well was designed for high pressures based on data from other wells in the region but the pressures have exceeded by nearly 50% even those of InterOil's Antelope discovery, 170km to the north-west.

SI Students Plan Boycott

Solomon Islands, Government-funded students, studying at the Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang, have issued a seven days ultimatum to their sponsor as a result of non-payment of allowances. A statement from the DWU Solomon Islands students association (SISA) said failure by the Solomon Islands Government will result in the students staging a protest and boycott all their classes.

Pacific Games

Both Australia and New Zealand will be eligible for medals at the 2015 Pacific Games, which will be held in Papua New Guinea. In a historic move for the first time ever the two nations will be part of the games, which in the past only had Pacific nations.

Boost for PNG Ports

The government last week committed to the relocation of Port Moresby's main port area from its current position to Motukea, after cabinet received a recommendation to approve funding to buy the facilities privately-developed by Queensland-based Curtain Brothers.

The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, at the official opening of the Taurama Barracks swimming pool has said the government remains committed to rebuilding all Defence Force barracks throughout the country. O'Neill also said that he had in plan to start up "a very generous pension scheme" or all defence and other disciplinary forces.

Oil Search Eyes Expansion

Oil Search has said it is confident that enough new gas will be found in PNG to justify a significant expansion of its processing facilities there. PNG operators have an advantage over LNG developers in places like Australia, where labour is more expensive. They also benefit from buyers choosing to source their energy from different countries to protect against the risk of supply disruptions.

US Small Grants Program

Through funding from the US State Department's Full Participation Fund, the Ambassador's Small Grants Program for Women's Empowerment seeks to increase community-based organizations' capacity to improve the welfare of women and girls in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands. A total of USD $30,000 is available for this program.

Rewarding Journey

A recent mission to supply villagers in PNG with basic needs has been hailed such a success that the organisers had to say 'no more!' to donations. Mullumbimby realtor Mark Cochrane and wife Alison have just returned from a trip to one of our closest neighbours and = along with a few other locals on the journey - have made a big difference to villagers in the Louisiades and Trobriand Islands.

Roadshow Vital

Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry Richard Maru is anticipating uniting all the Melanesian nations to promote their products and discuss investment and trade opportunities in the coming roadshow. Maru said the focus would be on trade between these nations. The first roadshow was held in Fiji last year.

Another case of measles has been identified in Cairns, Australia after the recent arrival of a person from PNG. This follows another case confirmed recently also involving a traveller from PNG.

TB Public Health Emergency

Health experts are calling for tuberculosis to be declared as a public health emergency after a seven-month study into TB infection rates found that many people in rural areas are dying from the disease without ever being diagnosed.

Oil Search Health Fund

Australia's Oil Search is expanding its role in the country from its vast resources activities to running the country's HIV and AIDS programs. The Bill Gates-founded health financing firm the Global Fund was funding the programs by making direct donations to the PNG government, but stopped the payments after an investigation uncovered the misuse of nearly $US1.4 million.
