News Items

Fiscal Fragility

Despite having one of the fastest growing economies in the world and a booming resource sector, PNG is facing its own 'resource curse'. Six months into 2014, the government appears to have fallen short in sticking to its budget plans.

Sexting Ban

A prominent constitutional lawyer in PNG says a move to ban so-called 'sexting' is an outrageous breach of human rights. As part of a review of the Censorship Act, PNG's Censorship Board is considering banning sexting, the act of sending of sexually explicit messages or material by mobile phones.

Social Media Exposing Politicians

Thanks to the Internet and the explosion of social media a politician can no longer hide.

Move over, Mike Tyson. The tribes of Papua New Guinea's Tufi region do not mess around when it comes to body ink. But here in Tufi, it's a rite reserved solely for women.

Pipeline Calibration

Intertek, the leading quality solutions provider to industries worldwide, has completed calibration services for Oil Search Limited on its PNG export pipeline in a contract worth £600,000 (2.8 million PGK/US$1 million).

PM Referred

Reports say Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has been referred to the public prosecutor for alleged misconduct over his government's purchase of shares in an oil and gas company. The Post Courier has reported Mr O'Neill as criticising the Ombudsman Commission's move as disappointing, adding that he had not been given adequate time to respond to the complaint,

The last of the live 2-hour Tok Pisin program on Radio Australia has gone to air.

A female volunteer ambulance officer from New Zealand has suffered a gunshot wound to her right leg above her kneecap while sleeping. The injury occurred after a gun battle erupted outside where she was staying in Port Moresby. She had been working with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in PNG. The Christian group said it was "very sad" to confirm one of its volunteers had been injured.

Lae City Commission

Lae MP Loujaya Kouza has been appointed as the interim chairperson of the proposed Lae City Commission. PM O'Neill said Kouza "is a courageous leader and I am certain that that strong determination will be reinforced in the management of Lae city."

Aussie Rules Football

Australian Rules football has gone global with the 2014 International AFL Cup now taking place in Melbourne, Australia. The two-week event features 25 teams from around the world, involving more than 900 players from countries including Canada, China and Papua New Guinea.

The competition from some of the countries is at a vastly different level to the highly skilled PNG players. For example in PNG's second game, played against India in Melbourne, the PNG Mosquitoes stung the Indian Tigers 33 goals 18 behinds to the Indians nil score.

Rising Sea Levels

The Carteret Atoll is becoming increasingly uninhabitable due to the shoreline being eroded by unusually high tides, which used to come every five or 10 years, and now are appearing every year. On top of that, the low tides are retreating further, leading to bleaching of the coral. The islanders need to be resettled but resettling some 2,000 people - the total population is around 2,700 but the elderly do not want to move to the mainland - requires more than just dumping them in a strange place.

Kainantu Bridge Collapses

After over 50 years of heavy use and very little maintenance, an old Bailey bridge in Kainantu has finally given collapsed.
