Independence
The nation of Papua New Guinea achieved its independence from Australia on 16 September 1975. Officiating at the main ceremony held in Port Moresby were His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales (representing Queen Elizabeth II, the British monarch); Sir John Kerr, Governor-General of Australia; Australian Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam; and Chief Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare, who became the country's first Prime Minister. The new country became a constitutional monarchy with membership of the British Commonwealth.

Bita Paka Battle
The Battle for Bita Paka has been remembered in Kokopo, East New Britain province. The tranquil setting of the sculptured gardens at Bita Paka War Cemetery belies the battle that took place near there a century ago. The battle for Bita Paka, fought by the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, was the first Australian battle of World War One. It was fought in German occupied New Guinea and the resulting disruption to the German wireless network was definitive.

PNG Coffee
A good cup of PNG coffee can be used to calm the nerves, wake you up in the morning or celebrate a win. This is exactly what newly elected Orange, NSW mayor John Davis and deputy mayor Chris Gryllis did. Gryllis, who voiced his support to import coffee from Mount Hagen in PNG after three councillors visited Orange's sister city last month, said the council had begun to source the first bag for sampling.

K7000 School Fraud
Two men facing fraud charges relating to more than K7000 of school funds have been committed to stand trial at the National Court. Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Cosmas Bidar said there was sufficient evidence to send Evara Kelly and Ako Robin for trial in the National Court.

Madang Measles
Health authorities in Madang province are urging people to seek medical assistance immediately, if they think they might have measles. At least 10 children in the area have died from the virus already, while there have been more than 17-hundred confirmed cases.

AE1 Submarine
Almost 100 years since the day of its disappearance, the Australian Navy is believed to have made a breakthrough in the search for a missing World War I submarine. Considered the oldest mystery of naval history, the AE1 submarine was deployed and lost in September 1914. The crew of the boat became Australia's first casualties of the WWI.

Bougainville Conflict
Perched on the north-west tip of the Solomon Islands archipelago, Bougainville forms part of PNG's easternmost border region. Despite its remote location the development of a major copper deposit in Bougainville's Crown Prince Ranges made the island one of PNG's most strategically significant areas. Consequently, when customary landowners used industrial sabotage to close the mine in 1988, this regional dispute soon transformed into a major national crisis.

Pacific Unity 14-8
Though the official mission of Pacific Unity 14-8 is to construct two female dormitories for students at Togoba Secondary School in Papua New Guinea, Airmen deployed in support of the operation have found additional ways to give back to the community.
The team hosted a shoe drive on the 6th of September to benefit students at the school and children in the local village. A total of 264 pairs of shoes, 60 pairs of shorts and 36 t-shirts were purchased and donated in support of the effort.

Hectorville Hounds
Thanks to an understanding Australian Department of Immigration a 14-year-old from PNG has been able to play in the Hectorville Hounds' under-14 grand final in Adelaide. The boy has lived in Adelaide with his family for the past three years on a temporary Visa and became a dedicated and popular player in Hectorville's under-14 team. The family's visa was due to expire and they were forced to travel to Queensland to await their return to PNG

The government has given its support to the Woodlark Island gold project, telling owner Kula Gold that it would acquire a 5% participating interest in the project.

Floods a Health Concern
The provincial government in Gulf province has been blamed for a lack of response to flooding in Kikori. The PNG Post Courier reports the month-long rain and floods have destroyed 20 villages and affected more than 40,000 people.

Credit Corporation (PNG) Ltd group recorded a half year profit of K28.68 million compared with K41.32 million in the same period last year. The group's core business financing, investment and property rental activity continue to produce acceptable results relative to the various economic circumstances that prevail.

A fresh endeavour is taking place in PNG to boost access to family planning services. According to Australian Doctors International, PNG's maternal mortality rate of 733 per 100,000 births is the worst in the Pacific region.
