Bougainville Time Zone

From Sunday the 28th of December 2014, the Bougainville Time Zone comes into effect. From this date Bougainville will be an hour ahead of the rest of PNG.

Pacific Games

The Fiji Men's Hockey team is set on winning gold at the 2015 Pacific Games.

Fiji is aiming for the ultimate best; and in the sporting code of hockey, for which they are defending regional champions after winning the Pacific Cup last month, players and officials alike are adamant that they have the winning formula to bag gold.


The Games organising committee is confident the event will be delivered as planned.


Kavieng Port Storage

According to the contractor, Lims Construction Ltd (Lims), the storage facility was completed on time and is being prepared for commissioning. It will soon be handed over to PNG Ports Corporation Limited's (PNGPCL) Kavieng Port management for use.


Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is looking at flying to Papua New Guinea to accommodate the growing number of passengers. The Philippines Star reported that PAL has filed an application for re-allocation of additional entitlements on the Manila - Port Moresby from the unutilised seat entitlements previously allocated to budget airline Cebu Air Inc. (Cebu Pacific).


Witch Hunts Displacing Dozens

In an interview with Radio Australia, Ruth Kissam, youth coordinator for the Western Highlands provincial government, said that witch hunts in the country are a serious problem and "a matter of national urgency".

Lega Siaka Named in Aussie Team

Papua New Guinea cricketer Lega Siaka has been named in the Australian Prime Minister's XI for the annual one-day match next week. Siaka, 22, will become just the fifth overseas player to represent the Aussie PM's XI when he takes the field against England at Canberra's Manuka Oval on the 14th of January.


Expat Found Dead in Lae

An expatriate businessman has been found dead at his home in Lae, and police have not ruled out murder as a possible cause.

The body of the Singaporean, identified as Tan, was found at his Eriku suburb home. Tan, the owner of Morobe Stationery Company, had been operating in the province for more than 20 years.


Free Land Titles

The Government will give out 2000 land titles in Port Moresby free of charge to ordinary Papua New Guineans to build affordable homes, National Planning Minister Charles Abel has indicated.


Air Niugini

Air Niugini pilots have signed new contracts with the airline. This follows the completion of a successful negotiation between the pilots and Air Niugini


Michael Learns to Rock

Fans of Michael Learns to Rock throughout the country are anticipating watching their favourite band of all time perform live for the first time in PNG's Capital Port Moresby this month.

The Danish pop/soft rock band will hit the stage on the 17th of January at Gold Club, Lamana Hotel.


Tuna Not Human Bodies

Investigators say the reports of dead bodies being stored in a wrecked fishing boat off Bougainville are inaccurate. Reports said the bodies of 3 men had been found in the freezer of the abandoned fishing vessel.

But an assessment team which travelled to the island on Monday found that the suspected bodies on the freezer trays were large yellow fin tuna that were the size of adult human beings.


2015 to be Challenging

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says Papua New Guinea is prepared to make progress in 2015, despite global downturn in leading economies.

"There will be challenges, particularly as the larger economies around the world face difficulties, but we are working to insulate people and businesses in our country from these complications."

Malaria Treatment

New research claims a combination of naphthoquine and artemisinin drugs could be highly effective in treating malaria in kids. The new research was conducted by University of Western Australia



The RSPCA in Port Moresby has new state of the art digital x-ray machine valued at K200,000. The RSPCA raised the money needed for the machine by hosting two main fundraisers in 2014.



Cabinet Papers 1988-89

Australian Cabinet was warned that the triggers for a military coup in Papua New Guinea had been identified as Australia's position as a close friend and adviser was under challenge 13 years after the Melanesia nation gained independence.


Honiara and Nadi Flights

Fiji-based Discount Flight Centre, general sales agents (GSA) for Air Niugini, managing director Sashi Singh said Air Niugini has started operating a direct return service between Honiara and Nadi. The first flight began on Christmas Eve and will continue weekly.


Flood Relief

Residents in the Dei District of the Western Highlands province have received relief supplies just before Christmas to help them cope with the aftermath of huge floods last March.


PNG Archaeology

An Archaeological Association conference held recently in Cairns, Australia focused on PNG Archaeology.


The recent three-day conference marked the Australia Archaeological Association's (AAA) 37th meeting.

Skul Bilong Yu

Micro Solar Changing Lives

A tiny solar power system in a remote location of PNG can make a massive change in the lives of the people that get to use the energy produced.


Virtual Library

Digicel, a mobile phone provider operating in PNG, has distributed 500 free tablet devices to schools across the nation so students can access a "virtual library".

The virtual library is "housed" in Digicel's Port Moresby Data Centre and is fully accessible offline - the tablet devices have been fitted with a unique, secure SIM card, allowing the tablet device to use a dedicated network pathway to connect to the library.


Schools participating in the pilot phase include: Sevese Morea Primary and Gordons Secondary in Port Moresby, Sir Tei Abal Secondary in Wabag, Mendi Primary in Mendi, SDA Primary in Kavieng, Kubalia High School in East Sepik and Hagita and Cameron Secondary schools in Alotau.

MV Bulolo

The Bulolo once ferried passengers from Australia to PNG. The Bulolo was the Australian cruise ship that became a battleship and led the fleet on the D-Day landings, turning the tide of World War II.
