Pacific Games

PNG confident of hosting 2015 games --

Over 300 PNG Defence Force soldiers will be engaged in the Pacific Games Security Operations. Army Commander, Gilbert Toropo, said what is important in keeping the peace and security during the Pacific Games is discipline and he expects his men and women to show that during the games security operation.


The police commissioner of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) has assured athletes and visitors attending next month's Pacific Games that they will be safe in Port Moresby. The police will use two Israeli-supplied surveillance balloons to monitor the various games venues and coordinate responses.

Aquatic Centre to be Tested --

Over 70 PMV's and 40 smaller vehicles will be used to transport athletes and officials during the games. People trying to commute to work during the games will suffer due to the loss of 70 buses.

Pacific Games on TV

Live coverage of the Pacific Games will be available to viewers in Australia on the National Indigenous Television (NITV) network. NITV will bring audiences all the sporting action when the tournament kicks off from the 4th of July. In two Australian firsts, viewers will be able to catch all the Games' action on free-to-air television and cheer on favourite Pacific athletes as they compete in four sporting areas for the first time.

There will also be a 12pm daily highlights show between Sunday 5 July and Sunday 19 July, recapping all the action from the day before.


Pacific Games Relay

The running of the 2015 Pacific Games are not far away and the Games Relay Baton has made its way on a special trip to Cairns in Australia. The Games Relay Baton is now in Central province. It has also visited Arawa in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

The Australian Federal Police say they will work with the Papua New Guinea police force to ensure security throughout the duration of the Pacific Games in Port Moresby in July.


Mt Hagen

Police in Mt Hagen have appealed for calm following a recent riot by high school students. Students rampaged over the death of a fellow student in a roadside accident, amid tensions between locals and settlers from Eastern Highlands.


Cricketers Beaten

The Netherlands have beaten PNG by five wickets in a rain-interrupted one day cricket match in Amsterdam.


Residents Clean Port Moresby

Communities living on the NCD and Central province border have joined in the clean-up of the Moresby North East Electorate, mobilising in smaller groups and cleaning the roadside.


Caritas Hall Opened

Port Moresby 2015 have announced the Caritas Hall venue is officially open, while Steamships will be the title sponsor of the POM Racquets Club as preparations continue ahead of the Pacific Games, due to begin on the 4th of July.

PNG has offered to host the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group Leaders' Summit in 2016.


ATR 72 Aircraft

It was announced at the recent Paris Air Show that a retrofitted combi version of an existing ATR 72 aircraft will be launched by an airline operating in PNG.

Relations with China

Acting Prime Minister Leo Dion has said PNG is satisfied with the maturity of the country's relations with China. The Acting Prime Minister Dion made this known during a meeting held recently with the Special Envoy for China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue His Excellency H.E Qiwen.


Long Term Dredging Deal

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) has awarded Dredging International a five and a half year extension of its contract to remove mine-derived sediment from the lower Ok Tedi river system in the Western province.

Award winning artist and one of PNG's top musicians in the country Anslom Nakikus has been announced as the new Ambassador for Refugee in PNG during the World Refugee Day celebrations.

Seafloor Mining

A coalition of Canada-based environmental groups is questioning a study commissioned by Nautilus Minerals that claims mining copper from the seabed causes less disruptions to the environment and local communities than traditional extraction methods.

World Refugee Day

Saturday, 20 June saw World Refugee Day celebrated not only around the world, but also for the very first time in PNG. Jack Pidik Park in the capital, Port Moresby, was the site for various events and activities on the day that aimed to raise awareness surrounding the dire situation refugees face worldwide.


Nigerians Jailed for Drug Smuggling

After the interception of methamphetamines worth over a million New Zealand Dollars, attempted to be smuggled into New Zealand from PNG, four Nigerians and a New Zealander have received long jail terms for their roles in an international drug smuggling ring.


Energy Licenses

PNG could reallocate as many as 20 of its energy licenses, many of them in the upstream business with major players standing ready to snap them up, the country's minister of petroleum and energy said recently.


Pacific Economic Greening

The Asian Development Bank's energy operations in the Pacific aim to boost energy security, support low-carbon growth and help expand access to modern energy services. For PNG, which is among the largest borrowers from the ADB, the bank said improving the hydropower plants at Port Moresby are among the regional priorities. With most PNG consumers relying on fuel-powered generators, ADB said keeping Port Moresby infrastructure in working order will help reduce fossil fuel consumption.


Madang Festival 2015

The Madang Festival has begun with the Miss Madang Pageant being held at the Madang Resort Sana Room where more than 400 witnessed the event over a dinner to raise funds for the Haus Timbuna (Museum).

Fiji's High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Esala Teleni has presented his credentials to the Governor General of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio.


Illegal Fishing Crackdown

Taiwan and PNG have inked a memorandum of understanding in which the two countries agreed to cooperate in cracking down on illegal fishing. The fishery cooperation deal is the first of its kind between the two countries on fishery management cooperation.


Moody's Update

Moody's Investors Service says that lower commodity prices have adversely affected PNG's government's fiscal balance and the country's external payments position. Revenue has come in under budgeted projections, while the current account's return to a surplus last year has not been sufficient to avert an ongoing fall in foreign currency reserves. In addition to the deterioration of the external payments position and the imposition of currency controls, the public sector has recently incurred more cross-border debt, notably a private sector loan to finance a stake in Oil Search.


Gulf Governor Arrested

The Governor of Gulf province has been arrested on a new charge of misuse of public funds while out on bail.


Asylum Seekers Join Legal Challenge

Almost a third of the asylum seekers at the Australian-run immigration centre on Manus Island are challenging their detention, after 277 of them were added to an ongoing case in PNG. The case will argue the detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island has breached at least 8 parts of PNG's constitution, including the right to liberty, freedom of movement, information about detention and access to a lawyer.

BSP is committed to helping Small to Medium Businesses (SMEs) in Papua New Guinea grow and this is evident in the fact that more than 14,000 SME's are using the bank's Smart Business Account and have direct access to finance via the BSP Smart Business Loan.


Geoffrey Vaki Found Guilty

Former police commissioner, Geoffrey Vaki, has been found guilty of contempt for not arresting the country's prime minister on corruption charges. A court has been told Geoffrey Vaki wilfully disobeyed when he refused to arrest the prime minister, Peter O'Neill, in June last year after a PNG anti-corruption taskforce, Sweep, linked him to allegedly fraudulent multimillion-dollar payments by the government to a Port Moresby law firm.


O3b Networks Helps Digicel

O3b Networks is providing additional trunking services to Digicel PNG, the Digicel Group's largest market. Digicel started O3bTrunk services in July 2014, increased the capacity in February 2015, and only three months later increased the capacity again, nearly a 150% increase in data throughput from the initial start of service.
