Independence
The nation of Papua New Guinea achieved its independence from Australia on 16 September 1975. Officiating at the main ceremony held in Port Moresby were His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales (representing Queen Elizabeth II, the British monarch); Sir John Kerr, Governor-General of Australia; Australian Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam; and Chief Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare, who became the country's first Prime Minister. The new country became a constitutional monarchy with membership of the British Commonwealth.

Preserve Motuan Tattooing
Calls have been made to preserve the Motuan art of tattooing. This was expressed by the UNESCO team on Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage mission in the Pacific region. The team visited Pari Village outside of Port Moresby and were impressed but stated more effort is needed to keep this tattooing culture alive.

Nadzab Airport
A funding agreement of about K1.8 billion has been signed between PNG's Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato and Japanese Ambassador Morio Matsumoto at the Sir John Guise Stadium indoor complex for work at Nadzab Airport.
The Yen loan was discussed in May between Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and PNG's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill at the 7th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting in Fukushima, Japan.

Police Bashings
Youths in the Lae say they have been bashed by plain-clothed policemen. A source told the Post Courier the police were in the process of fining motorists for traffic offences and mistook the youths for offenders.

Security Doors
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently installed security doors at Port Moresby International Airport.
Four installations were recently completed at the Airport, where ATDC's expandable security doors are being used to secure large retail tenancies. To address retailers' concern for the security of stock and property, Australian architectural firms are specifying ATDC's expandable security doors to meet their requirements for a cost-effective barrier capable of spanning very wide expanses across irregular shaped openings with no overhead support structure.

Indonesian Pair Detained
The Jakarta Post reports the Indonesian Consul in Vanimo, Elmar Lubi, as saying two men aged 28 and 30, who work in the logging sector, were captured recently while working in Skofro hamlet in Indonesia's Kerom regency. The Indonesian consulate in Vanimo, PNG, says that two Indonesian citizens are being detained in a village near the two countries' common border.

Refugee Assaulted by Guard

New Water Microbiology Lab
Eda Ranu has recently opened its new microbiology laboratory in Port Moresby for the Environment and Quality control division. This was made possible through the twinning program in partnership with Sydney Water Corporation and ADB. The laboratory now supports two fully kitted mobile labs bought in 2013.

Accountable Directors
President of PNG Institute of Directors (PNGID), Ian Tarutia, has said directors play an extremely important role in ensuring the success of an organization, yet they must also be held accountable for their actions, particularly if they sit on a board that deals with public funds.
Michael Varapik won the 2015 Male Director of the Year Award, for his role on the boards of landowner companies, in addition to his support for Catholic Church programs in PNG.
Lesieli Taviri, took out the 2015 Female Director of the Year, for her work within the energy sector, as well as for her work in championing the development of women in business.
Christopher Elphick was named Young Director of the Year, for his outstanding efforts in promoting PNG business, as well his leadership of Young Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
