The Pacific International Hospital (PIH) has joined the rest of the world in a cancer awareness globe-a-thon. The awareness march is the third that PIH has hosted, as part of the fight against cancer in the country.

Drought Relief

In response to the prolonged dry spell in PNG as a result of the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific region, the European Commission is providing 110,000 EUR in humanitarian funding to assist the most affected inhabitants.

Yampu Health Centre

Seven selected rural hospitals, including the Catholic Health Centre at Yampu, in the Enga province have taken part in a first of its kind program to test portable scanning devices to use on pregnant mothers and aims to reduce the amount of deaths happening during birth complications.

Shooting Victim to Return

A woman who was shot in Papua New Guinea just over a year ago says the experience stripped the fear out of her life. Cathy Franzoi will now go full circle and return to the place where she was hit during a gun fight.

The incident happened after a volunteering trip she was on with her teenage son Luke, for Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Medical Ships, offering medical training to local communities.

An Australian rice company operating in PNG could help deliver much-needed medical supplies around the country. SunRice has offered the use of its trucks to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who has been pushing to increase the involvement of private businesses in aid delivery.

National Mangrove Policy

PNG needs to have in place a National Mangrove Policy. The need was expressed among agencies at a forum held in Port Moresby recently to strategise and formulate a way forward to save depleting mangrove vegetation in coastal communities.

Climate Action Plan

PNG has submitted its Climate Action Plan Ahead of the 2015 Paris Agreement. An executive member of Australia's peak legal body says reports that two Australian lawyers have been banned from entering PNG raises serious questions about judicial independence. An executive member for the Law Council of Australia, Morry Bailes, says he is disturbed by the reports.

Domestic Violence

International volunteering organisation VSO have made a video highlighting the high levels of domestic violence in PNG and what's being done to change this. At least 67% of women in PNG are beaten by their husbands. For a country not at war, it has one of the highest rates of violence in the world.

Drink Driving Common

Drink driving in Port Moresby is becoming more rampant, despite Police road blocks. Police officers say, drink driving is becoming common with motorists not considering traffic laws. With the Festive season nearing, police say they will tighten up on intoxicated motorists in the city.
