Bougainville Threatens Legal Action

Bougainville president Dr John Momis has told the autonomous region's parliament that his government will take the PNG government to court if it continues to fail to meet its financial obligations. Dr Momis said many millions of dollars is due to Bougainville according to the terms of the peace agreement that formally ended the civil war and which was concluded with PNG in 2001.

PNG's Perceived 'Weaknesses'

Concerns for Papua New Guinea's ability to take care of its own domestic problems caused the Australian cabinet to develop new guidelines for handling Australia's closest northern neighbour.

"The course of PNG's development has significant implications for Australia given its crucial strategic location for us. Problems between PNG and Indonesia could complicate our own relationship with Indonesia. Indonesia's opinion of Australia is shaped by, inter alia, its assessment of our ability to protect shared security interests in PNG," said Defence Minister Robert Ray and Minister for Foreign Affairs Gareth Evans in a submission to the cabinet.

Police in Port Moresby have concluded a joint festive operation conducted with road safety officers and the Transport Department.

Scout Jamboree

Thousands of scouts from around Australia and across the world have descended on Appin, south of Sydney, for the 2016 Australian jamboree. Papua New Guinean scout leader Lohia Kauna said he was slightly overwhelmed by the scale of the event.

Soldiers Withdraw From Hela

The PNG Defence Force has withdrawn a platoon serving in Hela after two of its members were shot dead recently by locals, Hela police commander Michael Welly says.

Soldiers Face Mutiny Charges

Eleven soldiers from the PNG Defence Force Support Battalion have been charged with munity for allegedly refusing a directive from the military headquarters in Port Moresby. The soldiers had been deployed to Tari in Hela about 17 months ago and were supposed to have returned to Port Moresby earlier.

PAL Finds Potential in PNG

Philippine Airlines, unfazed by the reputation of the 137th-ranked country (out of 140) in the Economist Intelligence Unit's liveability index, sees potential in PNG and has commenced flights to the country with the inaugural flight touching down on the 18th of December in Port Moresby.

PAL operated in Jackson Airport between 1977 and 1986.

Male Free Bus

Female bus commuters in Port Moresby can now catch a free women-only bus funded by Australian Aid and the UN, as 90 per cent report they have experienced some form of violence while using the public transport system.

Expert Reflects 2015

According to the Executive Director of the Institute of National Affairs Paul Barker, in 2015 various adjustments were made in the budget, various reductions were made to avoid building up of the levels of debt, way beyond the budgeted levels of debt but again there were concerns where some of the areas that had some budget cuts were priority areas of public expenditure.

New Hela Governor

Komo-Margarima MP Francis Potape has been sworn in as the new Hela Governor by the provincial assembly in Tari. He replaces Hela regional MP Anderson Agiru who was unsuccessful in trying to get the National Court in Port Moresby to block the meeting of the assembly.

No Bougainville Disaster Relief

The Bougainville Disaster Office has not received any funds or assistance from the National Government and the Autonomous Bougainville Government to help people in the Atolls suffering from the drought caused by the El Nino weather in the country.

Students Killed in Crash

Four Seventh-day Adventist students died and another 11 were injured when the 36-seat vehicle that they were riding ran off the road near Wewak. A joint funeral for all five students has been scheduled for the 7th of January in Wewak.

Police Arrested

United States Military Academy

Foreign Advisors Terminated

The services of about 33 foreign advisors seconded to government departments have been terminated as announced by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill last year. Personnel Management Secretary John Kali said yesterday the services of all foreign advisors seconded to the Government departments have ended.

Taiwan Trade Office

PNG has opened a Trade Office in Taiwan which will strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, business, investment and tourism. The opening ceremony was presided over by Tommy Kambu Kunji, PNG's first representative to Taiwan.

Kimbe Queen

An official says the MV Kimbe Queen that ran aground off the coast of East New Britain recently is still stuck on the reef. The vessel ran aground on the 23rd of December on a reef near Talele Island in Lassul Bay, west of Rabaul. Over 60 people, including children, were rescued by a fishing vessel and transported back to Rabaul.
