FIFA Fines PNG
FIFA has fined and warned the PNG soccer federation for failing to play the second leg of a women's Olympic qualifying playoff. FIFA's disciplinary panel imposed a 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,100) fine, but no suspension from future competitions.

Snake Warning
Parents have been warned to keep a close watch over their children when outdoors as snakebites are particularly common at this time of year. The Charles Campbell Toxinology Centre based at Port Moresby General Hospital is urging parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of venomous snakes.

PNG Death Penalty
Pressure from Australia led to PNG shelving its plans to reintroduce the death penalty for serious crimes. Last month, the ABC reported Prime Minister Peter O'Neill had quietly announced plans to shelve the plans.
Dr Eric Kwa, the secretary-general of the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission, told a law reform conference in Melbourne that he had been tasked by the PNG government with investigating the most efficient ways to execute prisoners.

Highlands Highway
Sumkar MP and veteran Highlands Highway trucking operator Ken Fairweather says the highway and adjoining Ramu Highway are in their worst state in 40 years. Fairweather, who owns Kutubu Transport (formerly Pagini), said yesterday his company was losing up to K1 million a month because of regular problems along the highway.

Somare Announces Retirement
PNG's first Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, has announced he is retiring from politics. Sir Michael led PNG for 19 years as Prime Minister and is turning 80 next month. Sir Michael was the country's first prime minister from 1975 until 1980, then again from 1982 to 1985, and from 2002 to 2011.

Ok Tedi Rock Fall
A man has died at the Ok Tedi mine, forcing operations to be suspended less than two weeks after they were restarted. Ok Tedi Mining Limited said the worker was caught in debris from a rock fall on the mine's western wall. The company said PNG authorities had been notified of the man's death.

Indonesian Police Destroy PNG Marijuana
The Papua Police narcotics unit has destroyed 2.2 kilograms of marijuana smuggled from PNG at a recent event in Jayapura, Papua. Jayapura has become a popular place for the distribution of marijuana from Papua New Guinea, and in many cases, it is bartered with electronic goods, fuel and stolen motorcycles. Marijuana is smuggled via both land and sea routes in border areas.

Japanese Establishment
The newly appointed Petroleum and Energy Minister, Ben Micah, is going on his first overseas trip as head of the ministry today. Minister Micah is travelling to Japan, to discuss the establishment of downstream processing industries in PNG. He will also visit Singapore for the National Liquefied Gas Conference.

Disappearing Language
Unserdeutsch, or 'Our German', one of the world's rarest languages, is being kept alive in Australia, spoken by just a handful of families. "Unserdeutsch is a contact language, like all creoles are contact languages, and shares features with PNG pidgin, German and English but it has its own characteristics as well," said Professor Peter Maitz from the University of Augsburg. "The most important thing is it's the only German-based creole worldwide we know of, so this is really a unique language and unfortunately a dying language, so this is the last chance to document it."

Australian Aid
Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye has rolled out a red-carpet treatment to the Australian government for providing K1.2 billion aid package to PNG for economic growth and poverty alleviation. The Opposition Leader said when he was the Works, Transport and Civil Aviation minister in the past government, the people of Australia always financially supported PNG so that 'our people can have better road networks and transport system in the country.'

Wet Season
The National Weather Office has confirmed that the country will be experiencing the wet season from March until May. Assistant director of the National Weather Office, Jimmy Gomoga, said the El Nino conditions were slowing down and by June the country would return to its normal conditions both in the ocean and the atmosphere.

Bougainville Chief Secretary Dumped
Controversial Chief Secretary of the Bougainville Administration has been terminated from office. Monovi Amani, who only served ten months before being suspended for alleged misconduct in office, was officially removed from office on last week by the Bougainville Senior Appointments Committee.

Dengue Cases Detected
Six more people have contracted the dengue virus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in NCD to 11, according to the Health Department.

The PNG Institute of Medical Research has confirmed the presence of a dengue outbreak in Kiunga, Western province. The defence against the mosquito-borne diseases is for people to apply mosquito repellent, wear suitable clothes covering the body and sleep under mosquito nets during daylight hours and use window screens where possible.
