Detention Centre Illegal

PNG's Supreme Court has ruled Australia's regional processing centre on PNG's Manus Island was illegal because it amounted to holding people against their will. The operator of the centre, Transfield Services, said it was awaiting further guidance from the centre operator, PNG Immigration, as well as the company's client, Australia's Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Moody's Downgrades PNG Ratings

The credit ratings agency Moody's has downgraded PNG's foreign currency and local currency issuer ratings from B1 to B2. Moody's says heightened balance of payments pressures have put strains on foreign currency reserves and will continue to do so for two years.

US Embassy Security Message

The U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby informs U.S. citizens that the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel notice for Papua New Guinea regarding the Zika virus. FIFA Venues on Track

FIFA's Local Organising Committee and the PNG Sports Foundation are working hand in hand to ensure the successful delivery of the U20 Women's World Cup this November. Despite the lack of physical evidence, on both the PNG Football Stadium and Bava Park in Port Moresby, Executive Director of the PNG Sports Foundation, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, has given his assurance that all venues will be ready for delivery to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) by the 13th of August.

Review of Lands Act

Bomana Police Graduation

272 police recruits have graduated from the Bomana Police College. Out of the 272 graduands there were 37 females and 23 police recruits from Bougainville who were supported through AusAid and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Markham Clash

Over 10 people have been massacred in a fight in Markham between two ethnic groups that started after a drunk Markham Valley Secondary School student was assaulted at the Mutzing Market. The fight was between the Amari and Atzera people of Markham.

Tree Kangaroo Summit

Port Moresby's Nature Park has recently hosted the International Tree Kangaroo Summit 2016 in the nation's capital. Other countries including USA and Australia have previously hosted this bi-annual event, and for the first time, PNG, through its Port Moresby Nature Park hosted the event.

Chewbacca Beetle

Scientists have discovered a new beetle in PNG and named it after Star Wars character Chewbacca. The scientists called the species Trigonopterus chewbacca not because of its size, but due to its colour and hair-like growth that covers its limbs.
