Police Force Birthday

The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary has marked 128 years of its existence. The Constabulary began as two separate forces in German New Guinea and British Papua. In June 1888, the pre-war German administration established a police force. In 1891, the British established another force in British Papua. Governor, Sir William McGregor, later ordered the amalgamation of the German and British forces after the war.

Madang Evictions

The Madang government says the eviction of families from a piece of land last week was necessary because it had been earmarked for development. Madang Governor Jim Kas said part of the land occupied by squatters had already been allocated to police to build accommodation for its officers.

A ninety-four year old man and his family have been evicted from their home of sixty years, in Port Moresby.

Segeyaro Nominated For Trojan Try

Leeds Rhinos star James Segeyaro has been nominated for the Trojan Try of the Month for September.

Each month on the Super League official website, the fans have the chance to vote for the best try scored from a list of 10 contenders. Segeyaro has been nominated for his 85m interception effort in the first half against the Centurions that helped secure top spot for the Rhinos in the Super 8s Qualifiers.

Estonian Diplomatic Ties

PNG has established diplomatic ties with Estonia. Estonian Ambassador to Australia Andres Unga and High Commissioner of Papua New Guinea in Australia Charles W. Lepani have established diplomatic relations between Estonia and Papua New Guinea. Also, Ambassador Unga met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Papua New Guinea Rimbink Pato, who was on a visit in Canberra.

Kina Continues Slump

The Kina dropped by 9.5 per cent in a space of 12 months. The Bank of Papua New Guinea Governor Loi Bakani stated in its Monetary Policy Statement for the month of September 2016. The Kina rate also depreciates against the Australia Dollar (AUD) over the same period by 17.3 per cent to AU$0.4110.

Townsville Direct Flights

A Townsville missionary organisation has thrown its weight behind a push for direct flights between Townsville and Port Moresby, saying hundreds of their volunteers would use the service each year. At the moment they fly from Townsville to Cairns, then from Cairns to Port Moresby, before taking a third flight to the region where the organisation is working.

A concerned doctor has slammed the announcement by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to bring in Cuban doctors to work in the public health sector throughout the country.

Mercy Mission

Townsville ophthalmologist Dr Bill Talbot has helped to restore the sight of a 17-year-old boy during a mercy mission to a remote village in PNG.

Polye Leading Recount

Opposition leader, Don Polye, appears to be leading in a recount in his Kandep constituency. The recount of ballot boxes from the 2012 election in the Kandep district was ordered by the Supreme Court after a stalled trial and a series of appeals by the runner-up, Alfred Manase.

Creepy Critter Week

Port Moresby Nature Park will be once again be hosting its popular school excursion program 'Creepy Critter Week' from Tuesday 25 to Friday 28 October for junior grades 1-4. Creepy Critters Week was launched last year with over 1,000 students from 7 schools attending the program.

NCD Land Board

National Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop says the NCDC does not have a Land Board in place which has resulted in the sale and allocation of certain portions of land in NCD without proper consultations from the National Capital District Commission.

West Sepik Electricity

The Governor of West Sepik, or Sandaun Province is calling for the national government to help connect Vanimo's electricity grid with neighbouring Indonesia. Indonesia has linked up power from the capital of Papua province, Jayapura, to Wutung at the border with PNG.

Miss Hiri Hanenamo 2016

A grade 11 student from Marianville Secondary School has won the 2016 Miss Hiri Hanenamo quest. Marianville student Olive Tau who hails from Hanuabada and Gabagaba, was recently crowned Miss Hiri Hanenamo by Minister for Health Michael Malabag.

Airline Online Check-in

Air Niugini passengers on both domestic and international flights have been encouraged to make use of the airline's online check-in system in order to avoid long queues and time spent at the check-in counters at the airport.

PNG's rainforests are being torn down at an alarming rate, and the people whose lives depend on them are facing intimidation and abuse when they try to speak out, says Global Witness. Since 2011 Rimbunan Hijau has exported timber worth around US$ 70,000,000 from a small community in the Pomio area - enough to fill the Empire State Building

Australian builders are being asked by the Australian Turnbull government to take a carefully designed masterplan for a new AU$400 million hospital in PNG's second largest city, Lae, and do their best with a budget of only AU$170 million.

Kumuls Change Plans

PNG plans to tweak its preparation for the Rugby League World Cup as a result of the proposed changes to international eligibility rules. The PNG Prime Minister's 13, made up primarily of players from the Digicel Cup domestic competition, were thrashed 58-0 by a shadow Australian side in Port Moresby last month.

Ela Beach Development

A multi-million Kina grand plan has been unveiled by the National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop, for the redevelopment of Port Moresby's popular recreational area, Ela Beach. China Harbour has been awarded a K45.23 million contract to reconstruct Ela Beach Road as a four-lane road and build 300 car parks.

PNG Relaxes Ban for Aussie Tourists

The National Government will be following up on discussions with Australia and New Zealand next month for visa-on-arrival to be granted to PNG citizens. Foreign Affairs Minister, Rimbink Pato, said this when announcing the removal of the ban on visa-on-arrival for Australian passport holders.
