Telikom Launches 4G

PNG State own Telecommunication Company, Telikom has introduced 4G high speed internet services to PNG. The company is calling on customers who are using, Citifon services, mobile fixed wireless Telephones, EVDO Internet Dongles,  Mifi and tablets  to bring in their products and go to the Telikoms main office (Telikom Rumana) and swap for 3G/4G sim cards. The company says, they are also giving out free smart phones for every swap their customs are doing.

Busu Bridge Boana

Morobe Provincial Works manager Morobe administration Charlie Sindang says it will take another three-weeks for the repairs to the damaged Busu Bridge in Boana to be completed.

Apisah Wins in Singapore

New South Wales (Australia) junior talent Violet Apisah won the prestigious WTA Future Stars title in Singapore and has earned warm praise from an Australian great. Violet Apisah, who represented her native PNG at last year's Pacific Games in Port Moresby winning a silver medal in the mixed doubles, took out the Under-16 WTA Future Stars title in Singapore, defeating Indian Shivani Amineni in straight sets.

Air Niugini

The National Airline has celebrated its 43rd birthday on the 1st of November. Air Niugini commenced operations on the 1st November 1973 when the first Fokker F27 Friendship lifted off Jacksons Airport on a flight to Lae, Rabaul and Kieta.

Air Niugini has named one of its Fokker F100's "Rabaul". This is the second F100 aircraft to be named, after another was named "City of Lae" some time ago. Air Niugini has previously also named three of its Fokker 70 aircraft "Mt Hagen", "Hoskins" and "Alotau".

Qantas

A new Qantas daily service between Brisbane and Port Moresby will target the resource sector. The new service replaces Qantas' previous, turboprop-operated service between Cairns and Port Moresby, and is timed to enable business travellers to arrive in Port Moresby at midday, take meetings in the afternoon or next morning, and return the next afternoon.

Jimmy Drekore Wins Award

Jimmy Drekore, from Chimbu, has received the World of Children Health Award for 2016 in New York, USA. Jimmy Drekore is the founder and chief executive officer of the Simbu Children's Foundation. He was recognised for his work in helping rural Papua New Guinean children access medical care.

Drekore was among five people chosen from thousands of nominations for this year's awards.

FIFA Tickets

Tickets for the FIFA Under 20 Women's World Cup have gone on sale. In Port Moresby, tickets are being sold at the Waterfront Foodworld, Boroko Foodworld, Eurosports Vision City and Okari Haus Boroko. In Lae, tickets are on sale at the Zero City Supermarket.

Prices are as low as K15.00 for both the grand stand and outer stands at the National Football and Sir John Guise stadiums. The Bava Park and PNG Football Stadium grand stand is K10.00 and Outer Stand is K5.00.

InterOil Antelope-7

Drilling is underway at InterOil's Antelope-7 well. InterOil holds a 36.5375% interest in the well. Total E&P PNG Limited has a 40.1275% interest, Oil Search has 22.8350%, and the remaining is held by minority parties.

New Talent Show

One hundred and forty-three individuals and groups have tried out for a new talent show at the Murray Barracks Sports Complex. More talent is expected to participate in the second audition to be held at the Murray Barracks on the 5th of November.

Cigarette and Alcohol Tax

Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch when presenting the 2017 Budget in Parliament said the 2017 Budget will increase the alcohol indexation cap from 2.5 per cent to a fixed rate of 5 per cent biannually while the tobacco excise base rates will have a one-off increase.

Dual Citizenship

The recent approval of dual citizenship for eligible citizens has been mooted as being able to encourage investment in the country. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Rimbink Pato, says the Dual Citizenship Act will help in realising the country's development aspirations through trade and investment; and in effect, increase positive socio-economic indicators for health, employment, education and literacy.

Somare Will Be Recognised

Due recognition will be given to Papua New Guinea's founding father, Sir Michael Somare, Parliament has been told. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said Parliament and the country recognised the huge contributions by Sir Michael and others like Sir Pita Lus and that "none of us can fill their shoes".

Election Nomination Fee Increase

The PNG Government is planning a national election nomination fee for next year of K10,000 or US$3,150. Currently the nomination fee is K1,000 but the government has indicated a need to offset a lack of funds for the Electoral Commission ahead of next year's five-yearly general elections.

First Home Ownership Scheme

BSP (Bank South Pacific) has funded loans with a total value of K160m, for first home buyers under the National Government First Home Ownership Scheme (FHOS).

BSP's General Manager Retail, Paul Thornton says, "The FHOS is now considered a catalyst for growth in the housing market. The market has been attractive to property developers who started building homes and offering them for sale in and around Port Moresby."

A joint Task Force conference on security planning for the 2018 APEC summit has been held in Port Moresby. Security agencies involved in this conference include the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, PNG Defence Force, Correctional Officers, Fire and Emergency personnel and members of the Australian Police and Defence Force.

Landslide Buries Boys

Two boys have died when they were buried alive by a recent landslide in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands, A boy and a girl were pulled out of the rubble alive. Twelve others managed to flee from their homes when the landslide struck around 10pm at Ward Six, Kandep Compound in New Town.
