Tiensten Sentenced
MP, Paul Tiensten, has been sentenced to 9 years in prison with hard labour - one year less than the maximum sentence. The Pomio MP has also been ordered to repay a sum of 3-point-8 million US dollars that he was found guilty of misappropriating. The former MP celebrated Easter behind the prison walls.

Bougainville Exports
Autonomous Region of Bougainville cocoa farmers have received a long-term boost from a jointly managed PNG, Bougainville, Australia and New Zealand partnership to help grow the Bougainville economy. Sixteen community groups representing over 800 cocoa farmers received grants totaling K6 million recently to help them increase the production and quality of cocoa, and connect with export markets.

Over 3000 Nominate
A total of 3332 candidates have filed their nominations to contest the 111 seats in Parliament this year - a slight decrease from the 2012 total of 3447. It includes 165 women representing 5 per cent of the total number of candidates, according to Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato.

Don Bosco Tech
Students from Don Bosco Technical School in Port Moresby have recently volunteered and cleaned up Ela Beach. DBTS Deputy Principal for Student Affairs George Isoaimo said the initiative is part of a Servant Leadership Training program the school has been running for the last 25 years purposely to affect the conscience of the students to take initiative in organising programs that will positively affect the lives of people in their own communities.

Manus Access Denied
Australian Greens senator, Nick McKim, has been denied access to refugee detention centre on Manus Island. PNG's acting chief migration officer, Solomon Kantha, said the request had been denied because of "the sensitivity of ongoing investigations" into the Good Friday rampage by drunken soldiers at the centre. "The reason given by the PNG immigration department seems very thin and it wouldn't surprise me if Peter Dutton has got his fingerprints on this one," Senator McKim claimed.

Nun Assists Detainees
A Catholic nun has helped over 130 detained Vietnamese fishermen in a number of prisons in PNG to return home. Sister Ma Theresa Trinh Vu Phuong looked after the needs of those Vietnamese detainees and served as their interpreter and mediator in court, said the secretary for communications and youth at Don Bosco Technical School at Gabutu, in Port Moresby, Fr Ambrose Pereira.

Kava Destroyed
The PNG National Agriculture and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) has destroyed 11 boxes of Kava Powder. The 11 boxes of powder, from Fiji, was confiscated at the Jackson International Airport almost 2 weeks ago were destroyed at Kilakila Station last week. According to Mrs Marilyn Apa, NAQIA's Regional Plant Protection Officer Southern Region, the consignment was addressed to Jacks Retail PNG.

A fifth Fokker 70 added to the Air Niugini aircraft fleet was unveiled by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill recently and named Kokoda.

Sea Bed Mining
A campaigner against deep sea mining says locals have threatened to take up arms if a seabed mining project in PNG goes ahead. Canadian company Nautilus Minerals was given an Environmental Permit by the PNG government in 2009, to develop the Solwara 1 Project, but work is still yet to begin.

Madang Gun Smuggling
The Madang Provincial Police Commander is appealing to the residents of Madang to be vigilant of suspicious persons in their communities, and to inform police quickly. Superintendent, Jacob Singura, says Madang is the entry point of unlicensed firearms smuggled in from the border.

Catholic Bishop Conference
The Catholic Bishop Conference (CBC) of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands will build a new head office in Port Moresby at the existing location in Godwit Street. The new headquarters will house CBC departments in the coordination, planning and implementation of the evangelical and social outreach programs of the Catholic Church in the region.

Cancer Hospitals
The current government has announced it will build two cancer hospitals one in Port Moresby and another in Lae in 2018 when they are re-elected. The government will also build TB centres in Western Province and Gulf to fully contain the disease and help the people.

Lasiliba Primary School
Lasiliba Primary School children in Kavieng, New Ireland Province have witnessed the opening of their new school library, school hall and two houses for teachers. The work was made possible by a donation of K100,000 by Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, during his visit to New Ireland in 2013.

Morobe Traffic Registry
The Morobe Traffic Registry usually has one camera to use in the processing of license photos but that solitary camera has stopped working due to a technical fault. One motorist says he has waited for a month for his licence to be processed. Motorists have called on higher authorities and Morobe Traffic Registry, to help fix the problem.

Expat Stabbed in Lae
An expatriate has been stabbed in Lae, Morobe province after putting up resistance against robbers. Three suspects have been apprehended at the scene, one was shot and taken to Angau Hospital emergency to receive treatment.

Mining Ban Lifted
The mineral-rich Autonomous Region Bougainville has lifted a 40-year-old ban on new mining and exploration, opening the way for iron ore and copper operations. The moratorium on exploration and mining had been in place since 1971 - with the exception of Panguna - due to local concerns over revenue-sharing and the impact on the environment.

Victims Demand Votes
PNG officials say aggrieved relatives of three locals killed in election-related ethnic violence on an eastern island have made the unusual demand of cash and 3,000 votes to the candidates of their choice as compensation. According to police, the clash took place in Kimbe, the capital of West New Britain, between the supporters of two political opponents from rival ethnic groups.

Kunu Village Rainwater
Life just got a little easier for the women of Kunu village in the Southern Highlands Province. Collecting water, traditionally the task of women in this part of the world, used to be hard and dangerous work in Kunu, a small settlement of 700 people. It meant a three-hour walk each way, leaving the safety of the village, and risking falling victim to sexual violence. No longer. The International Committee of the Red Cross recently installed a rainwater harvesting system in Kunu and the village now has all the water it needs.

Monitor Lizard 'Re-Discovered'
Scientists have recently found and re-described a monitor lizard species from the island of New Ireland in northern Papua New Guinea. It is the only large-growing animal endemic to the island that has survived until modern times.
