The PNG central bank fears 160 million kina ($57.31) of old currency, stolen while being shipped overseas, could be used to influence the country's national elections. PNG replaced its paper notes with plastic in 2012 and sold some of the discontinued notes to a recycler in Europe. But the Bank of PNG said a container of notes was hijacked somewhere en route, and was now making its way back into the country across the Indonesian border.

Fire Station Truckless
Suburbs served by the Boroko Fire Station in Port Moresby are at risk of serious fires because the station's two fire trucks have broken down. The fire station commander Superintendent Leo Ovia said Boroko does not have fire tenders to attend to emergencies in its zone that covers Boroko, Two-Mile, Three-Mile and Six-Mile, Kaugere, Sabama, Gabutu, Korobosea, Kila Kila, Pari, Taurama, Hohola, and as far as Eight-Mile, Nine-Mile and Bomana.

The President of PNG's Autonomous Bougainville Government, Chief John Momis has welcomed the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman Commission of Papua New Guinea. Speaking in Buka today during the opening, Chief Momis says that the Autonomous Bougainville Government is committed to support them in their work to weed out corruption.

The Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O'Neill CMG MP, has announced that the Member for Aitape-Lumi Open, will now serve as Minister without portfolio. O'Neill said the decision to relieve the former Treasurer of his portfolio was made in order to maintain confidence in the economy and ensure responsible administration of the Treasury portfolio.

The number of candidates contesting the general election has been revised to a total of 3324 people after accounting for two who recently passed away, one ruled ineligible to contest by the court and five others in the original list released after the close of nominations had been included by "mistake". Of the 3324 candidates, 165 are women and 3159 men.

A man is due to appear at the Kerema district court in Gulf Province charged with sexually abusing a teacher, apparently his wife's relative. According to Gulf police commander Chief Inspector Michael Pakyei, the suspect was arrested by Kerema police at his residence after the victim reported the matter.

A person contesting the National Elections for the Tambul-Nebilyer open seat in Western Highlands has donated drums of fuel to his rival candidates to use in their campaigns. When asked about his actions, the candidate said, he wanted to show the other candidates and the people that he wants a peaceful election to take place.

4.4 Million Votes Expected
Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, is expecting 5.2 million voters to be enrolled in this year's electoral roll. However, Gamato also says that only 4.1 or 4.4 million voters will come forward and vote.

Women Accused of Sorcery
A missionary in PNG says three women accused of practising witchcraft in PNG's Enga province are still in danger, despite being rescued by police. Both Anton Lutz and the local police commander say a total of four women were accused of practising black magic or sanguma, after a local man died.

It is estimated that the total debt for the country under the O'Neill government is K24 billion, according to former University of Technology vice chancellor and diplomat, Sir Nagora Bogan. "The incumbent government has borrowed recklessly against future income. It has mortgaged our future," Sir Nagora said.

Two former Royal Marines Commandos have completed a near 400-mile (over 630 km) trek across PNG. Louis Nethercott and Anthony Lambert battled through jungles, swamps and crocodile-infested rivers, relying on maps made by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during the Second World War.

The University of PNG's School of Business and Public Policy will integrate gender equality into its curriculum, as part of a new approach to changing behaviours. University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Albert Mellam, said that the institution had an important role to play in creating change.

17 Escapees Shot
Warders at Buimo Prison in Lae have reportedly shot dead 17 inmates when they attempted to break out of the jail recently. They managed to recapture three while a further 57 managed to escape. Some of the escapees were in custody awaiting trial. This is the third mass breakout from the prison in the last three years.

Wewak Cops Guilty of Arson
A former Wewak Police Station commander has been convicted of arson. The Wewak National Court found Chief Inspector Sakawar Kasieng, of Sibilanga Village, Sandaun Province, guilty of arson, while four of his officers were convicted for raping a 17-year-old girl at her family home on 7 December 2013.

Seabed Mining
A Canadian mining company says it is confident that a controversial seabed mine will be operational off PNG in 2019, as planned. Nautilus Minerals was granted an environmental permit in 2009 to develop the mine, but it is still yet to be built.

Church Reps on Rededication
The Catholic agency of the Mt Hagen Arch Diocese has gathered its representatives from 190 catholic-run schools in Western Highlands Province and Jiwaka at Rabiamul parish to rededicate their duties to God. The gathering was also to establish a network for them to interact with flexibility to achieve the same goals of the agency and individual aims.
