Election Security

A joint parade between members of Papua New Guinea's three disciplinary forces has been conducted in Port Moresby to mark the launch of the election operation. The launch signified the commencement of the Joint Operations in the National Capital District and Central Divisional Command. At least 10 companies were part of the parade. It was a short parade from the back of the Boroko Police Station to the front car park.

PNG Cancer Foundation

As part of its continuous support to the PNG Cancer Foundation's Healthy Teens School (HTSP) program, ExxonMobil PNG has contributed K165,000. Since 2014, ExxonMobil has supported the Cancer Foundation and continues to support the foundation in its cancer education and awareness programs. This year's contribution now adds to a total of K269,700.

Illegal Election Posters

Port Moresby City Manager Leslie Alu says almost all candidates running for posts within the nation's capital have ignored the city authority's requirements regarding the installation of candidate posters and banners. Mr Alu described the attitude as "sheer ignorance and stubbornness" directed against National Capital District Commission (NCDC) guidelines.

Madang Festival

The popular Madang Festival has been held once again. It offered an intimate insight into the tribal customs and cultures unique to the province. A quarter of the world's languages belong to Papua New Guinea and 25% of these are from Madang. No area in the world has such a variety of unique cultures. Madang has remote mountain communities, perched on ridges among the clouds, river people with stilt villages, coastal agriculturalists and deep sea fishing communities from the islands.

Lae National Housing Corporation

The renovation of the National Housing Corporation (NHC) office in Lae is to be probed. The NHC is trying to establish how its branch office in Lae was extensively renovated without following due processes. The Lae NHC has not paid a small contractor engaged for perimetre fencing. Cujo Build and Paint Works manager James J Zoriong revealed this after a call from new NHC managing director Ditha Morris, for investigations into the engagement of contractors. Mr Zoriong welcomed the call by Mr Morris for an investigation.

Water Polo Clinics

PNG Swimming in partnership with corporate sponsor Bank of South Pacific and Fina (International Swimming Federation) through its development and educational programme will be conducting a beginner's level water polo clinic for coaches in Port Moresby from the 28th of June through to the 1st of July.

Bank South Pacific Donates

Bank South Pacific (BSP) is availing a property it owns in Port Moresby to assist survivors of family and sexual violence, particularly those who are workers. The property at Erima had not been fully utilised, hence suggestions were to either sell or to use it by converting it into something that would provide some benefit to the community at large. The latter was chosen by the bank.

Ramu Ramps Up

The Ramu nickel/cobalt mine in PNG, in which Highlands Pacific Ltd (ASX:HIG) holds an 8.56% interest, is continuing to exceed production targets, achieving record monthly output of 3,068 tonnes of nickel and 292 tonnes of cobalt in May.

Trio Missing Off PNG Coast

Three men from Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea are missing after their boat capsized off PNG, officials said today, as a fourth man was reportedly rescued on an isolated beach after scrawling "help" in the sand. The men are staff of KPMG in Port Moresby and a spokeswoman for the accountancy giant said the company was hopeful they would be found.

Soldiers in Custody

Three serving members of the PNG Defence Force are being held in police custody in Kokopo, East New Britain province, allegedly hired by a candidate in New Ireland Province. The three non-commissioned soldiers await the arrival of their superiors from Port Moresby to further interrogate them for their involvement with a candidate from Namatanai.

One Shot in Tambul

One man was shot dead and several others have been injured at Tambul station in Western Highlands province. Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Martin Lakari confirmed that it was election related.

Paramedic Program

St John Ambulance PNG, with renewed support from the Ministry of Health, under current minister Michael Malabag, are now undergoing preparations to launch PNG's first-ever paramedics program. The paramedic course will start on July 10 and will run for six weeks.

3x3 Basketball

With the announcement that 3x3 basketball will be added to the Olympic Games in 2020, PNG could one day make it to the world stage. PNG was represented at the 2016 Rio Olympics by a handful of outstanding individuals but they were not represented in a single team sport. Doctor Wounded

Another doctor, who has been saving the lives of sportsmen and women, has fallen victim to armed thugs when he was wounded at a private hospital in Port Moresby recently. Lead team doctor for PNG Hunters, Dr Gideon Kendino, sustained gunshot wounds to his right leg in an unsuccessful armed hold-up at Paradise Private Hospital.
