Vale Peter Loko
Peter Loko, Country Leader at General Electric (PNG), has passed away. He started his career in 1983 with Telikom or PTC as it was known at the time). He has spent time at Telikom PNG, Kalang Radio, and Yellow Pages PNG. He was also a past president of Boroko Rotary. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Telikom PNG for a bit over 3 years from April 2009.

Observers Criticise Poll
International election observers have called for an urgent review of 'all aspects' of Papua New Guinea's electoral process in an interim report about the tumultuous national poll. Their report follows the resignation on Sunday of the PNG Electoral Commission's constitutionally required Election Advisory Committee (EAC) over lack of access to data to help determine if the poll is free and fair.

Water Workers Paid
Following a recent sit-in protest by Water PNG workers in Lae, outstanding payments to salaries, which were allegedly cut, have been paid. The sit-in protest came after senior staff at the Lae branch of the water service provider claimed they were paid only K50 last fortnight.

Judiciary Workshop
A week-long workshop for the Staff of the National Judiciary Services has been held at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby. The PNG Judiciary Information Technology Workshop for all judges, associates, registry clerks and IT is an annual event that is aimed at properly equipping the National Judiciary Staff with appropriate skills on data management system using the latest technologies available.

Officials Attacked
An election observer was punched and had his cell phone smashed, and other observers were harassed in separate incidents involving security officers in Port Moresby. The incidents have raised the concern of Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato who has written to Police Commissioner Gari Baki to deal with the issue which he said "do not reflect well" on the country.

Ela Beach Trees Uprooted
More protected trees have been uprooted along Ela Beach to make way for the redevelopment of the beach front. Traffic along Ela Beach to Downtown had to be diverted, while heavy machinery and workmen carefully worked away until the trees were felled. One onlooker, said that it was very sad to see the trees been removed as they were part of the iconic land mark where families would sit while enjoying the sea breeze and shade.

A man has been shot and killed by police on election security operations in West New Britain. The man was part of a gang that was involved in an armed robbery in Kimbe.

Parallel Imports
Plans are being mooted by the European Union Trade Project for a policy for the country on parallel imports. The proposal stems from issues that have risen recently in PNG and brought to the attention of the Department of Trade Commerce and Industry (DTCI). PNG does not have a policy in place to guide this type of trade.

Electoral Advisory Committee
A member of the electoral advisory committee which has resigned midway through Papua New Guinea's national election says they had to pull out to protect the integrity of the committee. The committee has resigned only a month into its job, indicating the Electoral Commission has not allowed them access to information they require to perform their assessment of the election.

Climate Change
The National Research Institute (NRI) says that PNG is not well equipped to manage adverse impacts of climate change even with lessons learnt from past incidents. Senior research fellow and programme leader Prof Eugene Ezebilo told a group of participants in a research presentation in Port Moresby that government agencies responsible for managing natural disasters were not prepared well enough to adapt to climate change.

The UN Population Fund says it will be promoting the implementation of sex education in PNG in an effort to address some of the issues the country is facing. The UNPF's Koffi Kouame said the country's population growth rate was about 3.1 percent and every 25 years the population doubles.

Fire Station Gets Help
The Gerehu Fire Station has sought and found assistance to fix its fire equipment to prepare for next year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Station commander superintendent John Gareresi told The National that their 24m aerial platform snorkel (fire truck) had not been in operation for more than 12 years.
