Port Moresby Road Runners were back at Lego Land, Konedobu, recently with the feature being the 7-kilometre event that followed Port Road into Town and towards Paga Hill before turning for home.

Suspect Shot in Madang

Police in Madang have shot dead one suspect and injured four others who allegedly robbed a shop in town during broad daylight recently. The suspects held up workers in a shop near Bank South Pacific and forced some passengers off a dinghy at ANZ Bank waterfront and made their escape on it.

Roads Barricaded

The initial commotion after the countdown to midnight on New Year's Eve left some streets in Port Moresby looking like a scene straight out of a war-torn country. Vehicles driving through Gerehu in the early hours were forced to navigate through roads littered with sticks, rocks, metal sheets and flaming rubber tires.

Lae Criminal Shot

An escape attempt by a gang turned fatal when police shot dead one of them and injured others near Lae over the New Year weekend. The incident happened at Situm in the Nabak local-level government area in an otherwise peaceful Lae.

Madang Election Results

Two election petitions disputing the 2017 Madang Regional election results will be stayed if the National Court decides to refer constitutional questions to the Supreme Court for interpretation. The election result is challenged by unsuccessful candidate James Yali. The referral was sought last week by the Electoral Commission and current Governor Peter Yama in the petition by another unsuccessful candidate Jerry Singirok.

Evicted Families Return

Two families, evicted from their homes of more than 30 years in Port Moresby, have been allowed to return to the properties at Gordons. They have since moved back into the properties after the Port Moresby District Court nullified the eviction.

PNG Honours List

The Bishop of Kimbe Reverend Bill Fey and a Lutheran Church academic topped the 2018 PNG Honours list announced by Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae. A long list of 100 laymen and women have been honoured in the 2018 List.

Stay on Gordons Eviction Remains

Lawyers representing parties of the eviction saga over the festive period will present submissions next week on whether the current temporary stay order on the eviction be upheld or dismissed. Magistrate, Jimmy Tapat, of the Port Moresby District Court sad this when adjourning the matter.

PNG IMF Report

Read the 2017 Article IV Consultation-Press Release; Staff Report; and Statement by the IMF Executive Director for PNG. A summary of the report says PNG is experiencing weak economic growth resulting from falls in major commodity export prices, the completion of the huge PNG LNG pipeline project, and a severe drought. These developments have led to fiscal deficits and increasing public debt as government revenues have declined.

NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, has said with the APEC Leaders' Summit now in sight, it is the opportune time for Port Moresby and its residents to chart a new course. Meantime when reminiscing on 2017, the Governor said the Elections and the Rugby League World Cup were some of the highlights for NCD during last year.

Ghost Names On Payroll

It has been revealed that some 4,000 people are getting paid outside of the normal government public service payroll. Public Service Minister, Elias Kapavore, says this is part of the reason of a budget blow out in the government payroll system.

Department of Higher Education

The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) is able to provide the complete list of the Grade 12 school leavers who have been selected through the Online Selection System to registered tertiary institutions for the 2018 academic year.

North Coast Aviation Crash

It has been confirmed that a pilot, flying a North Coast Aviation aircraft, crashed near the Saidor Gap, Morobe province on the 23rd of December. Unfortunately, adverse weather prevented a recovery team from getting to the site of the main wreckage until several days after the accident. The aircraft had impacted trees and terrain at an altitude of around 9,500 feet. Sadly the pilot was found deceased in the wreckage.

3G and 4G in Goroka

Telikom PNG has launched its 3G and 4G mobile services in Goroka. Telikom national retail manager Amos Tepi said the state-owned entity was mandated to provide reliable and affordable service.

Filipino Fishing

Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte has appealed to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in November to allow Filipino fishing companies to continue to bring part of their catch to General Santos City. It is reported that 40 per cent of fish processed in the Philippines actually comes from Papua New Guinea waters and 100 per cent of Philippine boats in the country have until now been subsidized by Papua New Guinea to supply PNG plants.

Another PNG Jailbreak

Four men are on the run after escaping from court cells. The men are reported to be dangerous and were among a group of Bomana jail inmates awaiting court appearances for offences including armed robbery and murder.

Customs, Immigration and Quarantine will increase their operations in preparations for the 2018 APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation leaders' summit to be held in PNG in November this year.

Giluwe a Challenge

An Australian tour company has completed the first traverse of Papua New Guinea's second-highest mountain, in the hope of opening a new tourism experience in the rugged Highlands region. No Roads Expeditions led trekkers up and over the Mt Giluwe massif in a difficult crossing of a plateau which was formed by an ancient volcano at more than 4,000 metres above sea level.

Decomposed Body Found

A Decomposed body has been found and retrieved by police at the Defence Force headquarters in Port Moresby recently. The body was found at what is known as Star Mountain at Murray Barracks. The body could not be identified due to the stage of decomposition.

Respect Migrants Says Catholics

The asylum seekers still in Manus and Port Moresby, under any circumstances should be accorded the respect they deserve. And under human rights, their cases should be treated with dignity and justice. This call has been reiterated by Pope Francis during his Christmas Eve Mass.

FIFA World Cup Trophy Visit

Preparations are already underway by the PNG Football Association to receive the FIFA World Cup trophy which will touch down in Port Moresby in February of this year (2018). The original trophy, which is usually kept at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, will visit more than 50 countries on six continents.

Canoe Trip Around PNG

Thor Jensen, the Danish kayak specialist, who took brothers Sanakoli and Justin John from Bedauna village in Milne Bay on the world's first circumnavigation around PNG in a traditional sailing canoe will document the trip through a film and write a book.

Vale Alan McLay

Alan McLay the President of the Lae Chamber of Commerce has passed away. The business community in Lae and throughout the country have expressed sadness in the passing of late McLay earlier the 2nd of January. The Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council in expressing its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the late Mr McLay said he was a remarkable gentleman and a well-respected business leader throughout PNG.

Vale Terry Shelley

Just turned 77 Terry, a long-time resident of PNG, has succumbed to cancer in Cairns Base Hospital. Terry's early career was as a cooperatives officer based in Kundiawa. He worked with the farmers of Chimbu to grow and market coffee as a cash crop, later joining his wife, daughter and sons as he established Nowek Ltd in Goroka -- http://giaman.com/s/kq

The media fraternity farewelled a senior colleague Ivan Bayagau who passed away mid-December after a short illness. The late Bayagau worked with Wantok Niuspepa before moving to other jobs.
