The Ninth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 7th to 13th of February 2018. The National Capital District Governor Hon. Powes Parkop and his delegates represented PNG at the forum.

Port Moresby General Hospital
Chinese Ambassador Xue Bing has shown China's continuous support in PNG by donating medical equipment to Port Moresby General Hospital. An endoscopic, worth around K100,000, was recently handed over to hospital staff by Mr Bing and the eighth China medical team in PNG.
Mr Bing said that in the health sector alone China provides annual grants and preferential loans to Papua New Guinea and co-operation in health was just only part of the overall relations that China has with PNG.

Land Giveaway Program
The Department of Lands says its part in the free land giveaway program initiated by the National Planning Department has been completed when it signed 300 titles for citizens selected under the scheme.
Lands Minister Justin Tkatchenko said this when asked about the project that was announced by the then Minister for National Planning and now Treasurer Charles Abel in 2015, on the first few hundred selections made from the 2000 allotments set for Port Moresby.

PNG Milk to Compete
PNG is reducing its reliance on imported milk with the availability of a new local supply. Ilimo Milk has arrived on Port Moresby supermarket shelves and free tastings were offered in selected stores. The milk is produced and processed at the Ilimo facility outside Port Moresby.

PNG and Kiribati have entered discussions into a bilateral air services agreement, permitting direct flights between the two states, as well as using the Federated States of Micronesia as an intermediate point.

Judges Needed
The PNG judiciary needs between 80 and 100 judges to deal with the increase in the number of cases coming before the courts, says Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia. He hopes that courts will undergo a restructure in the next two years.

New Sewerage Project

62 Year Old Sentenced
A 62-year-old man from Aitape in the Sandaun Province will spend the next five years in hard labour at Buimo jail for sexually assaulting a minor. The man was 60 years old on 26 June 2016 when he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in Lae, Morobe Province.

Kokoda Blockade
Landowners have closed off the famous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in protest against management of the historically important area. According to the newspaper, The Australian, a blockade was recently mounted at Sogeri, the start of the iconic World War II battlefield trek.

Seafloor Mining
Minister for Mining Johnson Tuke is firmly committed to the National Government's decision to go ahead with the Solwara One project. Mr Tuke maintained the government has done its due diligence to the latter and Nautilus Minerals has complied per government regulations. He said this in response to what he termed were external groups that continue to undermine the decision made by the country.

SABL Files Missing
Sixty special agriculture and business leases, SABLs, have gone missing from the archives of the PNG Department of Lands. The SABLs were found to have been illegally established three years ago but they have continued to operate, despite an outcry from landowner groups and community organisations.

Aliko and Ambai
Local PNG production, Aliko and Ambai is set to be shown on EMTV on the 18th of February. The story line tells of the lead character, Aliko, who lost her parents in an ambush attack and had her house burnt down in a tribal fight. She goes to live with her mother's brother in Goroka. Her wicked aunt and cousin, similar characters plucked from a Cinderella tale, soon force her to do all the work around the house and her only support is her new friend Ambai, and a young street-seller, Ethan.

Births and Deaths Registrations
A new health initiative is aiming to improving the civil registration system in PNG. The philanthropic agency, the Bloomberg Data for Health Initiative, is working closely with the PNG government to make registering details of births, deaths and marriages accessible for the vast majority of the population which lives in rural areas.

Refugees Return to Manus
Eleven refugees are now back in Manus province after receiving medical treatment in Port Moresby. According to reports, there were supposed to be 15 of them, however four of them absconded and remained back in Port Moresby.

SITA Improves Jackson's
Air transport IT provider SITA has deployed its AirportHub shared connectivity platform at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The new solution provides airlines, ground handlers and other airport tenants with secure and reliable bandwidth, including wireless connectivity to access off-airport applications.

Airstrip Cone Markers Delivered
Rural Airstrip Agency says it delivered more than 500 airstrip cone markers to rural airports last year. The cone markers, coloured white and yellow, help pilots of small planes navigate PNG's many remote airstrips when landing and taking off.
Airstrips that received the cone markers include Fuma, Honinabi, Yehebi, Hesalibi, Kapal, Mougulu, Lake Campbell, Gubam, Kiriwo, Kondobol, Waiwoi Falls, Debepari, Elem, Fane, Woitape, Sopu, Esala'a, Wayao and Misima.

Trukai Fun Run
The 19th annual Trukai Fun Run has been officially launched by the Vice-Minister for Sports Wesley Raminai at the Royal Papua Yacht Club in Port Moresby. Raminai encouraged other corporate sectors to be involved and give their support to the Fun Run. Funds raised from this year's run will go towards sending Team PNG to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April this year.

Gulf-SHP Highway
Parliament has been told the K100 million Gulf-Southern Highlands highway is on hold because of disagreements between two landowner companies over who should be contracted to construct the road. Apparently there are only 12 kilometres of road to be completed.

Ijivitari Petition Dismissed
The National Court in Popondetta has dismissed the petition disputing Richard Masere's election as Ijivitari member. It was dismissed for being incompetent. It was filed by losing candidate Sheldon Deilala, who alleged seven counts of bribery against Masere.

Oil Palm Roads
The National Government has for the first time allocated K20 million for roads in provinces developing oil palm. Treasurer and Deputy Prime Minister, Charles Abel, says the funding will be parked under the agriculture sector. He says this is to help the oil palm sector. Abel says the funding will cater for about 1,250 kilometres of roads identified around the country.

Serious allegations have come to the fore about a provisional election candidate of the Fijian National Federation Party. A woman, who worked for former top Police officer Romanu Tikotikoca when he was the High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, has alleged Mr Tikotikoca raped her.
