Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth about 39 to 41 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

Coconut Timber
An official from the Centre for Development of Industry (CDI) has said that PNG has a great potential for coconut timber milling. CDI is funded by the European Development Fund under the Lome convention.


Aviation Reunion
A reunion of aviators, who have flown in PNG, has been planned for the first week of July. For further details please send email to psharpe@datec.com.pg


Police Helicopter
The return of the police helicopter will hopefully see the return of some police presence in the nations capital because the roads are in such poor state that it seems the police vehicles can't negotiate the city streets any longer.


Kokopo, East New Britain
The town of Kokopo which is attempting to be the replacement for volcano stricken Rabaul is streaming ahead with completion of the four lane road in town adding to the changes taking place.


Gazelle Open electorate
The former East New Britain premier, Sinai Brown, has won the Gazelle Open election after the recent resignation of Nakikus Konga earlier this year.


National Census
It is reported that the census needs more support from government bodies. The National Statistician has said the National Statistics Office can not do the whole census without help from the various government agencies.


Bougainville
The Bougainville Interim Provincial Government hopes to establish a Statistics Office this year. The office would provide population and other up-to-date information about the province such as crop and marine production.


AusAid
The Australian Government will provide K400,000 worth of equipment to various faculties of the University of Papua New Guinea. It is expected that K40,000 of the money will be used to prop up the Medical faculty.


Fun Run T-shirts
An auction of T-shirts in aid of supporting PNG athletes to compete in overseas events saw an amount of K139,250 raised which was K15,250 more than last year. The T-shirts bought at auction by representatives of 33 companies will be donated to 67 schools and other institutions in the city that will be participating in the Fun Run.


Enga
The Engan governor, Peter Ipatas, has paid the school fees of students attending the tertiary institutions in Lae amounting to over K87,000. The money was for the tuition fees of Engan students attending the University of Technology, Lae Technical College, Balob Teachers College, Martin Luther Seminary, the Timber Industry Training College and Bugandi Secondary School.


Lae Students
in retaliation for an earlier attack on a student students from the University of Technology students recently torched homes, destroyed food gardens and looted property at a settlement near the edge of the university campus.

Some of the students involved in the raid admitted they had taken the law into their own hands because they were frustrated over recurring attacks allegedly by the settlers.


Goroka Students
Students from the University of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province have boycotted classes to protest the university council's decision to implement the new scholarship scheme.


PNG Information
Elder statesman, Sir Paulias Matane, has urged nationals to write more about Papua New rather than allowing foreigners to do it. He said it had been a long time since Independence but there were not many books on PNG by local writers.


Simbu
The Chimbu Provincial Government has paid the school fees of over 200 tertiary students from the province attending various institutions around the country. It is reported that an amount of K20,500 was paid for students attending the University of PNG. It is said that the government is paying on the academic results of the students.


Passports
A scam whereby non PNG citizens have been able to obtain a PNG passport has been uncovered recently within the Foreign Affairs department.


Stuck Ship
The 4000 tonne bulk log carrier which recently ran aground near the entrance to the Port Moresby's Basilisk Passage is still aground and local divers are disturbed by the amount of rubbish being thrown over board and polluting the environment. The ship, the Bao Ji Shan, missed the entrance to the passage by two nautical miles and hit the reef head on near the end of May.

It is hoped that the ship will be refloated soon.


Buses and taxis
The standard of buses and taxis in Port Moresby is currently under scrutiny by the Land Transport Board. The state of public transport has been of major concern to residents and tourists for many years. Once again Bart Philemon, the Minster for Transport, has brought up the introduction of meters in Port Moresby taxis.


Domestic Departure Tax
The East Sepik Tourism Board has protested over the announcement by the Land transport Board to introduce a domestic departure tax on air travel. The Board cited the fact that air travel is a necessity in PNG rather than a luxury.


Library Books
Papindo Trading Company has donated a truckload of books to the various schools in Morobe Province. The PNG Ambassador (in USA) who did not have money to freight them back to PNG until Papindo came to the rescue collected the books in USA. The books were distributed to Busu High School during a meeting of headmasters of the high schools recently.
