Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time, is currently worth somewhere around 27 - 27.5 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

East New Britain

The Kokopo Post Office was recently robbed of K10,000 when four men armed with shotguns stormed into the office. The robbers to advantage of the fact that most of the police were attending the opening of the sixth National Policewomen's conference.

Forests

Resource owners have lost more than K2 million due to the fact that the Forest Administration granted a company the rights to do road line clearance in the Pondo area of East New Britain when it should not have.

Central Province

The Central Province Agricultural Show Committee has now collected K65,000 towards the show. The most people to donate assistance are Moi Avei who has donated K40,000 and the Central Governor, Opa Taureka who donated K8,000.

Computers and Communications

The owners of this company, Agmark, are after expressions of interest for either a buyer or an equity partner as they try to rationalise their trading activities in PNG.

Power Problems

It seems that no province is able to keep a steady flow of electricity flowing through the power lines. As a result of heavy rain power poles and lines in four locations in the Rabaul and Kokopo areas recently were damaged causing an interruption the the supply. One pole carrying 66KV and 22KV lines collapsed whilst cross-arms on other 22KV poles fell to the ground.

Even the Lihir Mine site is having problems today with scheduled maintenance taking the power out from 7am to 2pm today (19 Oct 2001)

Music Concert

A Music Concert will be held to celebrate the United Nations International Year of Volunteers. It is going to be a big musical event, so the organisers are looking for talented Musicians. The Music concert will take place on the 5th of December to officially celebrate the International Volunteers Day under the UNV umbrella. If you are interested in taking part in the above mentioned event, please give Pablo a call on +675 321 2259 or e-mail "Pablo" pablo@dg.com.pg

Kokoda Trail

Oro (Northern) province landowners of the Kokoda Trail have said they will officially reopen the trail on the 14th of November saying that politics had led to the closure of the trail. The Minister for Tourism, Sir Pita Lus, welcomed the decision of the landowners.

Qantas

The last Qantas plane for some time was seen leaving Port Moresby two Thursdays ago with little fanfare. Despite rumours to the contrary Qantas plans to return to Port Moresby sometime in the near future. The Air Niugini timetable shows the schedule without Qantas right up until the end of January 2002.

Air Niugini Self Serve

When Air Niugini ground staff failed to turn up to check passengers in for an early morning flight from Tokua (Rabaul) to Port Moresby via Hoskins passengers found themselves loading bags. It is believed that some people even loaded themselves onto the flight gaining a free lift to Port Moresby.

Passengers on the first Air Niugini / Qantas flight to Australia had to wait for two hours due to the late arrival of the aircraft from Singapore. The next flight using the same aircraft on the same day to the same destination and then onto Sydney found the aircraft had managed to make up a bit of time.

Refrigerated Storage

Air Niugini has called for expressions of interest to build a refrigerated storage area for cargo to be located close to the existing cargo terminal at Jackson's airport in Port Moresby.

Central Province

High Schools in the Central Province face closure due to a failure by the government to help fund them. The local level, provincial and national governments have all failed to address the funding issue.

Asylum Seekers

Another boatload of asylum seekers are expected to be accommodated in PNG at the Defence Force Lombrum Patrol Boat Base in Manus. Despite being a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Acceptance of Refugees it appears that PNG has no foreign policy on refugees.

Telikom

It seems that the more people are attempting to get work done by Telikom PNG the more people seem to be told to wait until after privatisation. Many of the rumours heard state that it is a bid to inflate the value of the company by not outlaying anything on capital expenditure. Another rumour is that the company is broke and has no money for capital expenditure.

Library Services

A paper presented at a recently held five-day seminar held in Port Moresby has highlighted the deteriorating state of public libraries around PNG. Out of 20 public libraries only 13 are open. It was also highlighted that it would cost K7 million to maintain, build, stock and train staff to look after the libraries.

Milne Bay Copra

The Milne Bay Provincial Government has allocated K300,000 towards the implementation of a copra freight incentive fund. They have also put aside K50,000 for a committee to manage the fund. The money will be used to pay freight costs ranging from K1 per bag for producers near Alotau to up to K6 per bag for producers who are 300 km or more from Alotau.

Power Blackouts

Due to a burst main pipe that supplies water to the electricity generating turbines at Yonki Dam parts of Kundiawa, Madang, Ramu Sugar and Lae city were without power recently. The burst pipe resulted in a transmission failure at the Lae, Taraka sub-station.

Wau Report

Here is a report from a concerned resident of Wau. As usual the disclaimer of this being a gossip newsletter applies.

If anyone at all is interested in news of Wau, we the residents are thinking of changing the name of the town to "Leperville" as we are totally forgotten. In the past week in our small town we have had one pack-rape, one cold blooded murder, several armed robberies, one other rape of an under-age school girl, a PMV hi-jack and chopping of a passenger, robbing of Post Office takings which has resulted in the closure of the Post Office, several other break and enters with people chopped. Every night, gun shots are heard from within the town area. This is a very small town with under 4,000 people! We have only four policemen as all police personnel have been sent away as the Police accommodation was condemned by Health authorities, the "haus sik" is closed because a couple of weeks ago some "raskols" chopped up our Health Extension officer. We have not had a bank here for years, our Post Office is closed and all Public Servants have requested transfers and are not performing.

Bio Fuel

I have had an interesting visitor call around a couple of days over the last couple of weeks. Hanns Wetzel who used to live in West New Britain and knows a great deal about the "old" PNG even before PNG was PNG is back in the country trying to sell his ideas on Bio Fuel which, to me, seems to be a viable alternative to firstly diesel but secondly petrol. When his paper is ready I will reproduce sections of it on this website. If anyone is interested I will pass your enquiries on to Hanns.

Not only is the processing of coconuts into bio-fuel a real possibility there are many other benefits that could be gained from coconuts that seem to be growing everywhere but apart from food and copra are under utilised in this modern day and age.

Coconuts and Tearooms

Talking about coconuts has made me think about an excellent book that covers an attempt by one person to record some of the history of coconuts, tearooms and Rabaul. The book covers the eruption of the volcanoes around Rabaul in 1937 and the preface covers the reason why Pat's book is of extreme historical value. In 1942 the Japanese invaded Rabaul and destroyed irreplaceable records. I recommend that you somehow get to a library and grab a copy of the book titled Coconuts and Tearooms by Pat Boys. National Library of New Zealand ISBN 0-473-01724-5

It is copyrighted in 1993 but covers a six-year period in the 1930's. The book started out as ten foolscap, single-spaced pages that Pat's mother had written about her experiences. With this meagre beginning an a keen interest to preserve a little bit of the history of the Rabaul area and helped by over 200 photographs taken by her father Pat has been able to produce a wonderful 140 plus page book. The only complaint I could find about the book was that I wish the photos were in colour! Now if I could only buy a plantation for the price mentioned in Pat's book but using the money I earn today without subtracting anything for inflation.

City Hall

There are many rumours coming from City Hall at the moment. One side is trying to get back in power the other side is trying to alter legislation to stop politicians from having a free hand in the running of the Port Moresby City. For those that are interested it may be best to go to either the Post Courier or the National website. Both are mentioned at the end of this newsletter.

Farming

It would appear that one enterprising farmer in the highlands has beaten the odds and managed to grow asparagus. The farmer, described in the paper as having three wives and 19 children, is selling 14 to 16 boxes of asparagus weighing between 8 and 9 kilogram every week. Now that he has succeeded other farmers are following in his footsteps.

Phone Banking

As mentioned previously the rest of the world is happy to do banking transactions over the Internet but PNG is only just introducing telephone banking. The latest one to receive publicity is the PNGBC FonBenk. To attract customers they are giving away to 10 lucky phone bank customers K100 prizes. http://www.pngbank.com.pg - Now - Bank of South Pacific -- http://www.bsp.com.pg -- 180 2888

Financial Institutions

Computers and Communications

The current General Manager of the Comp and Comms is getting ready to "go pinis" and settle in the warmer parts of Australia. He is selling up his house in Moresby and if anyone has just a bit under K300,000 send me a message and I will pass them on to the GM.
