Remember that this mailing list is mainly meant for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time in this newsletter, is currently worth around 29.5 - 30 United States cents but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html

Want to find out more about Papua New Guinea? Try searching at http://www.michie.net/pnginfo and http://www.michie.net/png_faqs. The PNG Business and Tourism Directory located at http://www.pngbd.com is also an excellent place to look for PNG information.

For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look http://maps.expedia.com and then click on the find a map option. Go to this link for a quick start to a link to a map of Port Moresby. http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Also remember that the accuracy of the information in this newsletter should not be relied upon - it is, after all, a gossip newsletter.

Counterfeit Notes

A general warning has gone out to advise people that there could be a batch of counterfeit K20 notes circulating around the country. The notes look noticeably different in colour and so far have only had one serial number on them. SCP 781687. Another method of detecting the fakes are by looking at the position of the serial number - unlike genuine notes the serial numbers on the fake are hard against the edge of the note. The paper used for the notes can also be torn easily.

Anglimp South Wahgi

Jamie Maxtone-Graham has won the seat of Anglimp South Wahgi as an independent candidate. The government and the opposition to join their ranks are now wooing him. Mr. Maxtone-Graham had previously indicated that he would join the ranks of the government but was met at Jackson's Airport in Port Moresby by members of the current opposition. Mr. Maxtone Graham was previously a close runner-up for the Moresby seat held by Bill Skate in the 2002 elections. Mr. Skate and Mr. Maxtone Graham have buried the hatchet over that incident.

Sir John Guise Stadium

Another reader writes -- I am not sure if this is the right place...it's more like a complaint than news but hey...

I have noticed during my morning and afternoon jogging sessions that some local residents are coming in and out of the bottom floor rooms allocated to the Sir John Guise stadium grand stand. Has this place become a motel of some sort and if so, is this the plan that the government has on making money? (Or are they paying at all?) In relation, the general cleanliness of the stadium has depreciated, especially the main oval in front of the grand stand. Recently the grass was cut but only the oval. What about the stands on the other 3 sides? Will this be left until the whole place is ruined? Not mentioning about rubbish and buai paintings...
