Defence Force Reserve



A two day seminar held in Port Moresby recently was the first step in establishing a Defence Force Reserve force. The force has been established under section 12 of the PNG Defence Force Act of the 22nd of October 2007.

Illegal Entry



Three Nigerians accused of entering PNG illegally are having their court case in Vanimo drawn out because the court can not find a suitable interpreter to help translate what the accused say. The three were charged with illegally entering PNG through the border post at Wutung village, Sandaun province earlier this year. The three men have been placed under the custody of Vanimo Catholic Diocese for the last five months while they wait for their case to be heard.




Magistrate Killed

Four people have been charged over the murder and police investigations are continuing to determine if any others were involved in the killing.




Coffee Cupping



The second coffee cupping competition has commenced in Goroka with 11 international coffee experts sampling coffee from around the country. The contest has been dubbed the "Pride of PNG". The competition is being held at the Dr Mark Solon Auditorium at the University of Goroka. Many coffee growers have travelled to the event from around the country. Cable Vandalism



More telecommunication cables have been cut around Port Moresby causing inconvenience to many users. The damage appears to be deliberate sabotage rather than theft to sell the coper cable to scrap metal dealers.

Telikom have proposed a K10,000 reward for anyone able to inform on such vandalism. The Public Enterprises Minister is also collaborating with Telikom CEO to amend the Telecommunications act to allow for the jailing of vandals for up to 30 years. Telikom has been quoted as having spent K600,000 in the past two months to fix damaged cables.




Air Niugini



Air Niugini is advertising some good return airfares with accommodation in Fiji to promote its service to Nadi via Honiara.

All packages are per person and include the return airfares and three nights accommodation plus airport transfers -

Tambua Sands on the Coral Coast - K2506

and for those that want to go on to the capital of Suva at their own expense there is a package of K2358 at the Suva Motor Inn. The hire car, bus or plane fare from Nadi to Suva is not covered in this package.

It is hoped that Air Niugini will be able to use the recently delivered Boeing 757 for these trips rather than the smaller Fokker F100.

Airlines of PNG are advertising special return fares from Port Moresby to Brisbane and Cairns. Brisbane return - K1198 and Cairns - K998




Grade Ten Exams



The Grade 10 national examinations are now underway around the country. About 370 Grade 10 students attending the Mt Hagen Park Secondary School have joined thousands of others around the country.




Rugby League



A feeder club to the Australian National Rugby League North Queensland Cowboys team is in the process of signing two PNG players. Michael Mark and Jessie Joe have been signed by the Northern Pride rugby league club.




Immigration Probe



The probe into Immigration, Trade and Labour nears end. The investigators are now preparing to visit a number of entry points, including Vanimo, Daru, Mt Hagen and other strategic areas like Lae. see -- http://www.thenational.com.pg/101807/Nation%206.htm




Healthy Caravan



A mobile health dispensary and clinic sponsored by Boroko Rotary has arrived at Lealea village not too far outside the National Capital District of Port Moresby. The caravan is fitted with air conditioning and refrigeration, and carries a supply of medicine, test equipment and bandages. Although Lealea is linked to Moresby it and close by Papa village have been identified by Rotary as having no reliable Government health services.

Boroko Rotary president Peter Loko was also there to assist the team to fill medicine packets for the dispensary.




Miss PNG 2007



Miss Goroka 2007, Heather Launa, will contest the Miss PNG Red Cross title for 2007. Miss PNG Red Cross is currently Genevieve Roberts, employed by Goroka Grammar, who was Miss Coffee.

Bus Accident

Ela Beach Craft Market



The Ela Beach Craft Market held on the last Saturday morning of each month is a good place for residents and tourist to look for a bargain. Usually a traditional dance group will perform sometime in the morning to entertain the visitors to the market.




PNG - Indonesian MOU



A draft memorandum of understanding has been produced for the traditional fishing zone between Indonesia and PNG. The MOU has been based on the traditional fishing activities between locals and the fisheries departments of both countries. The MOU is expected to be signed by both parties during a forthcoming border liaison meeting.




Books



The School That Fell From The Sky - is a book about how a WWII pilot came back to help the villagers that helped hide him from the Japanese Army during the war. The pilot, Fred Hargesheimer was lost and alone behind enemy lines after one of the engines on his Lockheed Lightning P-38 was shot by the enemy causing him to have to eject from his craft. The second edition of this book is available from PNG Printing in Port Moresby. I am not sure what it costs with postage to overseas but I would imagine USD10 - 15 would cover an airmailed copy to your post box.




Fiji Donation



PNG has donated K400,000 to help PNG prepare for elections. The Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, presented a cheque to the Fiji government recently at the end of the Pacific Islands Forum held in Tonga.




Mt Hagen Hospital



The Wamp Nga Group of companies in Mt Hagen has donated a cheque for an amount of K5,000 to the Mt Hagen General Hospital to purchase a heart diagnostic service machine.

The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has donated a new Toyota Landcruiser to the Mt Hagen General Hospital. see -- http://www.thenational.com.pg/101607/Nation%2027.htm




Harmony Gold Mining



Harmony Gold Mining (South Africa) is the fifth largest gold producer in the world, with operations and projects in South Africa, Senegal, Australia and PNG.

The Hidden Valley Project in the country comprises the Hidden Valley/Kaveroi and Hamata open pits, a 43 million tonne tailings facility and associated infrastructure, the mine will produce approximately 300,000 oz of gold and 4 million oz of silver over a 10-year life. The Golpu copper gold project in the Morobe Province, resource stands at 163 million tonnes at 1,1% Cu, 0,6 g/t Au and 132 parts per million molybdenum containing 3,9 billion pounds of copper, 2,96 million oz of gold and 47 million pounds of molybdenum.

Harmony claim to be the first mining company in the country to build a tailing storage facility to prevent mine waste from spilling into the river system. It is reported that other mining companies in PNG dispose waste directly into the river system.




Kainantu Gold Mine



Highlands Pacific have sold their interests in the troubled Eastern Highlands, Kainantu Gold Mine to Barrick Gold for more than K400 million. (USD141.5 million). The Kainantu operation has created unprecedented losses for Highlands Pacific.




Earthquakes



An earthquake with magnitude 5.0 has occurred near Vanimo -- see http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/catalogs/cap/us2007iuas -- there has also been an earthquake near Arawa in Bougainville. The deep see quake measured six on the Richter scale was also felt in parts of East New Britain and New Ireland.
