Milne Bay

An officer from an Israeli Agri industry company is in Milne Bay province on a fact finding mission. The mission sanctioned by the Milne Bay provincial government aims to identify potential agricultural projects which they can assist to develop.

Floods

The international aid agency Oxfam says the flooding situation in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province has now reached crisis point. Seven people have been confirmed dead and about 11,500 people have been affected by flooding along the Sepik River.

Women's Aussie Rules Football

Ruby Leete is a well-known name in women's football in the north of Queensland. The Papua New Guinea born star grew up in Port Moresby and moved to Australia in 1996. Once settled in her new home of Cairns, she soon picked up the Aussie sports bug, first playing tennis, then netball, then rugby league. However it was only in 2009 after someone at her rugby club invited her to have a go that she got hooked on AFL.

Mother-Baby Packs

Warrnambool friends Jayne Hatherall and Jo Pruis have set up a Warrnambool, Victoria and south-west arm for the foundation and are calling for items to be collected so mother-baby packs can be made up and distributed. The mother-baby packs include soap, underwear, sanitary pads, muslin wraps, jumpsuits and beanies which have been instrumental in reducing maternal and infant death rates in PNG.

Julia Gillard's Visit

The Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, has visited PNG. The trip is the first official visit for Ms Gillard and the first visit since former prime minster Kevin Rudd visited in 2007. The three-day visit included visits to a local market and primary school as well as tours of the Exxon Mobil Liquefied Natural Gas plant and the Bomana War Cemetery as well as talks about problems with the Manus Island detention centre.

PNG Policing

Australia has agreed to help PNG improve its policing as the two close neighbours aim to broaden their relationship to accommodate a 'modernising' PNG. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Peter O'Neill recently signed a joint declaration for a new partnership between the two nations.

CHOGM 2013

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill strongly denounced attempts by certain quarters to hamper the hosting of CHOGM 2013 by Sri Lanka and indicated the full backing of his government for the Colombo summit. He specifically indicated his keen interest to visit Sri Lanka to attend the Commonwealth event and also to travel in Sri Lanka to get firsthand knowledge of the new harbour and airport development as well as on water reservoirs and climate change issues.

A group of PNG landowners are expected to visit Fiji soon to meet and finalise details with the Fiji government on the recruitment of Fijians to work in a Chromite mine in Madang.

The Papua New Guinea Ports Corporation Limited says the $US19.5 million rebuild of Alotau port in PNG is expected to give the country's economy a boost when cruise ships visit Milne Bay.

Thylogale Brunii

The dusky pademelon (Thylogale brunii), also known as the dusky wallaby, is a marsupial that can be found on the Kai and Aru islands, Papua New Guinea, and in the Trans Fly savanna and grasslands ecoregion in Papua Province in Indonesia. It prefers a habitat in both arid and tropical savannahs, forests, shrublands, lowlands, and grasslands.

National Haus Krai

The PNG Chamber of Commerce and Industry has backed the National Haus Krai. The chamber sees violence against women as a national issue requiring a comprehensive approach. The Haus Krai started in Port Moresby on Tuesday with a night long prayer vigil followed by a sit-in protest on Wednesday to coincide with the new sitting of parliament.

Cut Arms Off

A senior police officer says cutting off the arms of a serious crime offender is better than imposing the death penalty on him. The officer said if both arms were cut off, the person would become useless and would be spoon-fed by relatives and family members until death.

Politician Financial Returns

19 Members of Parliament will be facing a leadership tribunal for failing to submit their annual returns. The Register of Political Parties and Candidates Dr Alphonse Gelu said that currently the commission was finalising the list of MPs and was preparing to publish them in the media.
