Air Niugini

Air Niugini has taking delivery of its first Fokker F70 - P2-ANR Construction Number (MSN) 11578. This was previously operated by KLM Cityhopper as PH-KZG. The first flight for this Fokker F70 was on the 7th of November 1996.





Five-year Country Partnership

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a five-year country partnership strategy with PNG. The Country Partnership Strategy's first Country Operations and Business Plan makes available over K1 billion in resources to PNG.

Early-warning System

UNDP in partnership with the Office of Climate Change and Development will start developing early-warning systems for inland and coastal flooding to enable local communities to cope with the floods and enhance country's capacity to adapt to flood-related risks. The initiative will be implemented in five selected provinces: East Sepik, New Ireland, Morobe, Northern Province and Madang.

Poultry Ban

An indefinite ban has recently been imposed on the importation of raw chicken from Australia. Agriculture and Livestock Minister Tommy Tomscoll says the decision was made following ongoing concerns about potential health threats.

The Secretary of PNG's Poultry Industry Association, Keith Galgal says his association is delighted that the ban is now in effect. Mr Galgal says one in four households is engaged in poultry production and the ban will support hard working small holder farmers.

The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, said Westpac Bank will play an increasingly important role in PNG's ongoing economic growth and infrastructure expansion.

Global Water

World leaders have been urged to take stringent measures to protect fresh water sources, because the globe will one day face a water crisis. State Enterprises and Investments Minister Ben Micah says he will be pushing for the Government to take water issues in the country more seriously.

Second Gas Project

First shipments from a new LNG project in Papua New Guinea operated by Total are expected in 2021, a top executive involved in the project said. The project will become the second in the country, after ExxonMobil began exports last year from its $19 billion PNG LNG project.

BSP Higaturu

The Bank of South Pacific has recently opened a sub-branch at Higaturu in Oro (Northern) province. The bank anticipates that this sub-branch will ease the burden on its main branch in Popondetta as it will have the ability to process loans, cheque deposits, Mobile banking registrations and an ATM on site. It will also perform traditional functions like deposits, withdrawals and account openings.





West Sepik Governorship

Confusion exists over the election of Vanimo-Green MP Belden Namah as governor of West Sepik. It is claimed the election was improperly held and is therefore illegal. The Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion says he is studying documents and currently it is unclear who is governor but the law does say a member of the National Parliament should fill the position.

Dion, the minister responsible for Inter Government Relations, said he was studying documents alleging that Namah "hijacked and abused the legitimate and democratic process of the election of a provincial governor."

Parliament Speaker, Theodore Zurenuoc's six-person parliamentary delegation to the United States to take delivery of a Holy Bible gifted by the US state of Indiana has cost the taxpayer more than K65,000 in airfares alone.

Telikom has cut its retail costs on internet rates by more than 50 per cent for customers.

Seafloor Mining

Canadian company Nautilus Minerals is once again gearing up to become the world's first deep sea miner of gold and copper at its Solwara 1 site in Papua New Guinea. The company has recently let contracts with global giants from Britain's Rolls Royce through to engineering firms, shipbuilders and specialist part makers in China, Germany Italy and more.

MV YWAM PNG

Puma Energy, Papua New Guinea's major fuel supplier, has today pledged ongoing sponsorship of the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) medical ship MV YWAM PNG. The ship will travel to remote communities in PNG to address isolation and medical infrastructure challenges and deliver primary health care, optometry, dentistry and training services to vulnerable communities.

Jacks of Fiji

One of Fiji's biggest clothing retailers, Jacks of Fiji has opened an 800-square-meter space featuring spaces to be used for exciting merchandise mix on apparel and accessories plus corporate sales on company uniforms outlet in PNG. The company has gone into partnership with Port Moresby-based City Pharmacy Limited and will open its new retail business, Jacks of PNG in Waigani.

De la Salle Secondary

De La Salle Secondary School in Port Moresby is improving its behaviour and academic marks, school principal Samuel Ume says.

The school started just after the end of World War II on the 25th of Feb 25, 1946 by the De La Salle Brothers as a primary school with 83 male students.

Better Than Cash Alliance

The Government has joined the Better than Cash Alliance and committed to making all payments through electronic channels, including all government salaries and social protection payments. This move made PNG the first Pacific nation to join the Alliance. As a member, the Government will leverage electronic payments and increase security, transparency, and convenience for its people.

ANZAC Day Madang

Over 2,000 people attended the 100th Anniversary Anzac Dawn Service in Madang held at the Coastwatchers Memorial and WW2 Memorial to those who served in the Australian Infantry, the Coastwatchers, Navy RAAF. A simple Gun Breakfast was provided to all that attended on the site of the Lighthouse whilst ex-servicemen were invited to a more formal breakfast at the Coastwatchers Motel.
