Illegal Migrants Deported

Nearly 150 illegal migrants have been deported from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia. The migrants in West Sepik province were working for a palm-oil company without proper permits for up to two years.

Queen's Birthday Honours

Many people have been honoured in the Queen's birthday honours list 2015. Three people have been awarded KNIGHTS BACHELOR - they are

Justice Warwick Andrew. Formerly Judge in the National and Supreme Courts. For services to the community and the judiciary.

Kosta George Constantinou, OBE. For services to sport tourism, banking and to the community.

Pacific Games Relay

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay has continued on its trip around the country. The official Games Baton has now visited the Gulf province. The relay has also made visits to Dogura and East Cape, Milne Bay province. East Cape is the most eastern part of the island of New Guinea.

Immigration Officers Charged

Three immigration officers who allegedly beat up a refugee saying "This is our country" have been arrested in Papua New Guinea.

Pacific Angel Exercise

The Pacific Angel 2015 Exercise, conducted in Goroka by PNG and USA, has concluded after seven days of civic assistance projects that provided medical care for 3,859 patients, refurbished three schools for 3,000 students and helped two local hospitals overhaul their ability to respond to emergencies.

Pacific Angel is a joint and combined humanitarian assistance operation conducted in the Pacific area of responsibility to support U.S. Pacific Command's capacity building efforts. The humanitarian and civic assistance program is aimed at improving military-civilian cooperation between the U.S. and Pacific partners.





First Home Ownership

The First Home Ownership Scheme is a joint initiative between GoPNG and BSP, and provides access to all Papua New Guineans to flexible and affordable financial arrangements to enable them to own their own home. To date, BSP has funded a total of 25 loans at an amount of K 8.4million. Most of these are in the NCD. At the moment BSP has over 800 loan applications that are going through processing for eligibility for loan.

Mass Prison Breakout

Poor policing and the slow court process has been blamed for a mass prison breakout from Buimo Jail near Lae. 68 inmates recently escaped from the jail in broad daylight.

Send Hope NOT Flowers

Canberra, AUSTRALIA, charity Send Hope Not Flowers has helped turn Papua New Guinea's shocking maternal death rate around by using "mother and baby gifts" to encourage village women to access a supervised birth at health centres throughout Milne Bay province. This has resulted in an 80 per cent increase in the number of mothers receiving medical assistance during labour.

BSP Brand Ambassador

Sprint queen Toea Wisil has signed up as BSP's brand ambassador for another two years. The agreement is timely and was well received by Wisil who is preparing for a medal showdown at the Pacific Games in July. Toea who has represented BSP as the brand ambassador since 2012, is now hard at training for the 2015 Pacific Games.

Bougainville Cabinet Takes Shape

The re-elected Autonomous Bougainville Government President, John Momis, has announced part of his caretaker cabinet. President Momis announced that Patrick Nisira would continue as vice President of the autonomous Papua New Guinea region. He also presented the new member for Peit, Josephine Getsi, who is the first woman to be elected a member of parliament in an open seat, as his caretaker government's choice of women's representative.

Lihir Mine Reopens

Operations at the Lihir Gold Mine have re-started after heavily armed police flew to the island. Newcrest Mining confirmed the gold mine shut down for approximately 36 hours and called the landowner's action "illegal" under an agreement signed in May.

The Lihir gold mine is located in an extinct volcanic crater and is believed to be one of the world's largest gold deposits.

Opposition MPs continue to ask questions about how US$18 million meant for an agricultural project in East Sepik was spent.

Caritas Secondary School

A gymnasium valued at K10 million has been opened at the Caritas Secondary School in Port Moresby. Sports Minister Hon. Justin Tkatchenko said the gymnasium will be used to host Table Tennis, Boxing, Taekwondo and Body Building during the Pacific Games.

About 3000 people have marched on the streets of Port Moresby in the ninth annual Sir Anthony Siaguru Walk Against Corruption held recently.

Road Running in POM

The top two runners in the Port Moresby Road Runners Endurance Challenge managed to avoid each other in the recent Seven-Mile meet, making it difficult to assess their form with only one race left in the annual points series.

The Modilon hospital, in Madang, is expected to resume services after a week's closure in protest over the kidnapping of and assault on two doctors.

Church Fights Witch Killings

The Catholic Church in PNG is trying to curb so called "witch Killings" in the country, which are reported to be claiming up to 150 lives a year. The Church is striving to curb the witch hunts before they reach crazed proportions similar to those seen elsewhere in the world in previous centuries.

Five successful young Papua New Guineans departed this week for their pilot training program at the PPT Flying School in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia after signing their contracts with Air Niugini.
