Remembrance Day Holiday

Remembrance Day is 23rd of July. PNG Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Papua New Guinea to remember the members of our armed forces who have died on duty in World War I, World War II, and in general peace keeping and law and order engagements within PNG and abroad.

Vale Harry West

The Papua New Guinea Association of Australia advises that long time President, Harry West, OAM, has died at the age of 93 years.

Loved and highly respected, Harry steered the PNGAA for 26 years until stepping back from his role as President, which he had held for 16 years, in 2008. In April 2008 he was unanimously voted an honorary life member of the PNGAA for outstanding and meritorious service to the Association, one of only 4 recipients in its 64-year history.

Rugby League 9's Gold

Papua New Guinea won gold at the Port Moresby 2015 rugby league 9's, defeating Samoa 38-10 in a gold medal match performance that underlined the host's superiority throughout the two-day event.

The Oceania Football Confederation disciplinary committee upheld a protest lodged by the Vanuatu Football Federation that claimed South Africa-born defender Deklan Wynne playing for New Zealand was not eligible to play in the match.

ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier Abandoned

Hong Kong's bid for redemption after their disappointing loss to Jersey in their opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers did not even get off the ground on Monday. Persistent bad weather and a wet outfield forced the abandonment of their scheduled group A match against Papua New Guinea, without a ball being bowled, in Bready, Northern Ireland.

Harmony Weighs Up PNG Options

Harmony Gold is assessing how best to extract value from its Golpu copper and gold deposit in PNG. The options around Golpu potentially range from an outright sale to unbundling the asset or separately listing it, with the option of Harmony retaining a stake in Golpu.

Orchids on Display

There are over 3000 species of orchids found in PNG and many were seen on display at the Sir Rabbie Namaliu Orchid Gardens at Parliament House in Port Moresby recently. The display of orchids has been going for many years.

USNS Mercy Visits Kokopo

A group of Sailors attached to the hospital ship USNS Mercy volunteered their time on the 6th of July to help students and teachers refurbish the Kopopo Secondary School during Pacific Partnership 2015. The volunteer event was one of several community outreach projects that took place in Kokopo during Mercy's port visit.

Games Anthem Questioned

The modified version of the PNG National Anthem sang at the opening of the Pacific Games in Port Moresby has been declared a violation of the law by former chief justice Sir Arnold Amet.

A whole section of the anthem that acknowledges and gives thanks to the God of the Christian nation of PNG for His Kindness, His Wisdom and Love has been described as absolutely unconscionable.

Girl Missing in Port Moresby

A sixteen year old girl has gone missing in Port Moresby after attending Pacific Games basketball match at the BSP Stadium in Waigani.

100,000 Meals Served

Over 100,000 meals have been served at the 2015 Pacific Games. In the middle of a lunch-time frenzy at the Athletes' Village on Sunday, the catering manager announced loudly and proudly that staff had just served meal number 100,000 of the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

The staff at the village serve an average of 3,000 people at every meal: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Sports Shooting

After a hiatus shooting in PNG appears to be gaining some momentum again. The 2015 Pacific Games has helped to gauge the progress of PNG shooters. A least that is the vision of a long-time shooter at the Port Moresby Shooting Club, veteran Air Niugini pilot and member of the PNG men's shotgun team, Daniel Wanma.

Wanma said the Games enabled the Port Moresby Shooting Club to recruit young talent into the club that has been in existence for nearly 40 years, but which had seen little activity in the past 15 years.

Samoa has broken local hearts with a 9-7 victory over Papua New Guinea in the final of the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games mixed touch footy at the Bisini Grounds.

Women in Business Expo

Local Solomon Island products are being highlighted and displayed by members of the Solomon Islands of Women in Business Association (SIWIBA) in Port Moresby, at the Digicel PNG women in business expo and has attracted a lot of attention.

Gerehu District Hospital

The Gerehu District Hospital has had to scale down its operation due to many of the staff such as specialists, nurses and health extension officers are manning the clinic at the Games Village.

Australian RL State of Origin

There have been calls to scrap the live broadcast of the Australian Rugby League State of Origin matches in PNG due to the many violent outbursts that are erupting after matches, sometimes resulting in deaths.

By-Elections

Two separate by-elections are set to be run in PNG. One will be in Goilala after its MP, Daniel Mona, died of malaria in February and the other in West Sepik after seat had been vacant for two years. In 2013 the Supreme Court ruled out the 2012 national election victory of Amkat Mai and called for a by-election.

BSP Takes Over Tongan Bank

Bank South Pacific (BSP) has taken over the operations of the Westpac Bank of Tonga. The Westpac Bank of Tonga employees, who number around 76 in Nuku'alofa and Vava'u, including management, remain with the new bank.

BSP Group employs more than 4000 people across PNG and the South Pacific region.
