The ruling People's National Congress Party has sacked one of its women members, the Member for Lae Open Loujaya Kouza. The Post Courier says the party sacked her because she made outrageous accusations and had distasteful manners outside the conventions of decency, respect and common sense.

Securing the Common Border

Lack of police, immigration, and quarantine presence at the Solomon Islands-Papua New Guinea common border is a long-standing issue. But past governments seem not to have taken it seriously. Airline Rebranding

Air Niugini has done it now Airlines PNG are doing it. Following last year's rebranding of Air Niugini's domestic arm into Link PNG , their domestic competitor Airlines PNG is now following suit and rebranding as PNG Air.

Beckham In Mt Hagen

Former World Football Superstar, David Beckham, arrived in Mt Hagen recently amidst much fanfare, He was greeted by Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko. Beckham is in the country as part of his role as a United Nations goodwill ambassador, and was brought in under the Unicef Program being run in PNG.

NRL Premiership Shield

The Australia’s National Rugby League Premiership trophy arrived in Port Moresby this afternoon .Former Cowboys, State of Origin Queensland and Australian representative Brent Tate proudly showed off the trophy at the airport after walking out of the arrival launching.

Madang Governor Disappointed

Madang Governor, Jim Kas, has expressed his disappointment towards the national parliament in delaying the Manam Resettlement Authority Bill (MRA). Governor Kas said with the bill being adjourned once more to a later date, he hasn’t attended parliament following this decision out of disappointment.

Morauta Warns of Economic Storm

An economist and former head of Treasury, the Bank of Papua New Guinea and other institutions, Sir Mekere Morauta said the nation could not continue on its present course. Sir Mekere said Standard & Poor’s (S&P) rating made it very clear that the Government’s fiscal policies and practices were the cause of problems and thus the downgrade.

Pirates Caught

Madang police have successfully caught two members of a group suspected of belonging pirates, who are holding up and stealing from people travelling to and from the islands. The suspects were caught, after they held up a boat containing 11 people, and were reported by a couple who sighted the boat, and after witnessing suspicious movements alerted the police. Most of suspects escaped while firing shots at the police.

O'Neill Survives Attempt

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has headed off an opposition attempt to throw out the country's government. He had been potentially facing a vote of no confidence tabled by the opposition, which wanted allegations of official corruption against him to be dealt with by the police and courts.

Yeast Must Be Regulated

Lae Community Policing Sergeant, Alois Gabuar, said regulation of yeast sold in stores is the only way to deal with uncontrolled production and consumption of illegal alcohol. The comments come as the Sergeant is of the belief that awareness in communities is doing little to combat rampant homebrew production and consumption.

Public Forum

Opposition MPs have held an open forum in Port Moresby, as a vote of no confidence looms over the Peter O'Neill government. The move comes as the opposition leader, Don Polye, claims his message has been distorted and hindered by the government and its gags on the media. Polye says he has invited the Prime Minister to join the forum.

APEC Meeting Successful

The Prime Minister, who is also the Minister Responsible for APEC, has congratulated the Forest Minister for successfully hosting the first APEC meeting ever held in Papua New Guinea.

PNG Air

PNG Air, formerly Airlines PNG / Milne Bay Air, and ATR have signed a comprehensive long-term Global Maintenance agreement (GMA) providing a total support package for the airline's fleet of ATR 72-600 aircraft. The airline has recently received one aircraft, with a further six to join the fleet over a two year period.

PNG 'Failing' on Family Violence

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says PNG is failing to protect victims of family violence. The country's lack of action is the subject of a report due to be released this week. The NGO says that despite the government passing family protection laws two years ago little has changed.

Mendi's Melanie Kawa

Melanie Kawa not only carries the pride of PNG overseas, but has set the benchmark and guidelines for women's rugby in PNG. She was born in Mendi, in the Highlands and has spent much of her adulthood abroad, but the 28-year-old has been a superstar for women’s rugby in Australia. As well as this, she has gone on to become the first woman to play professional rugby in Europe’s elite competition.

Kavieng Service Centre Re-opened

Members of NASFUND in Kavieng were excited to learn that NASFUND was back in town. The service centre was officially opened last week and was witnessed by dignitaries from the Provincial Government, business houses, representative of contributing employers and the public.

Huge Drop in Revenue

The government has announced a huge drop in its revenue and major funding cuts in a 2015 supplementary budget and its 2016 budget. The supplementary budget included a 12 per cent drop in revenue, a hit of about 1.5 billion kina to its 15.1 billion kina overall budget. Economic growth is predicted to fall from 9.9 per cent to 4.3 per cent and PNG's debt will rise by 2.02 billion kina to 19.7 billion kina

National Identification Card

All Papua New Guineans are required to have a National Identification (NID) card. The rollout of the NID card system is compulsory and people who refuse to be registered will have difficulties accessing banking and government services.

So far only one per cent of the country’s population have registered.

Twin Otter Accident Report

A report about a Twin Otter crash on the 20th of September 2014 is available in amongst other reports at the link below.

The accident flight, operated as a charter by HeviLift, departed Woitape, Central Province, on an IFR flight plan in daytime VFR conditions to Port Moresby. Reported weather at the destination was low visibility in rain, with most of Mt. Lawes enveloped in clouds.

Paga Hill Estate

Work has begun to develop the Paga Hill Estate, at the iconic headland of the capital city, Port Moresby. The development’s architect Paul Gallagher said the project will transform Port Moresby’s infrastructure and public accessibility.

2017 National Elections

The PNG Electoral Commission and provincial administrators will now partner to plan and conduct the 2017 national election. The pair signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) today with the Momase region, consisting of East and West Sepik and Madang Province.
