Dual Citizenship Approved

The Dual Citizenship Bill has been passed by Parliament. The Bill had the unanimous support of Parliament. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said holders of dual citizenship could not run for public office.

No-confidence Bid

The Acting Speaker of Papua New Guinea's parliament rejects the latest motion for a vote of no confidence in the country's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill. The motion by the Opposition was rejected by a parliamentary committee because it failed to meet the "minimum requirements" of Section 45 of the Constitution, according to acting Speaker Aide Ganasi.

Suspect Dies

Police in Port Moresby are investigating the death of a suspect after he was found dead in his cell block at the Gordon's Police Station. Investigators say details of the cause of death are still sketchy as police continue to assess the body.

Suspect Escapes

One of the two men accused of killing Iranian asylum seeker Reza Barati on Manus has escaped from prison. Joshua Kaluvia, a former Salvation Army worker at the Manus Island detention centre, was facing trial for the wilful murder of Barati in February 2014.

National Climate Plan

IMF Loan

The Opposition's shadow Minister for Finance Mark Maipakai has commented that he doubts whether the International Monetary Fund to address a backlog of foreign currency orders by the companies for imports will sustain the economy.

Final Budget Outcome

PNG Treasury has released an update on what may really have happened with the 2015 budget. Like the mid-year Treasury MYEFO update, this is a frightening document that points to a collapse in government revenues of 20 per cent in 2015 relative to the budget, and reveals 2015 expenditure reductions of 37% in health, 36% in infrastructure and 30% in education, areas the government said would be protected.

Port Moresby Mero has been crowned the men's champions of the 2016 National Softball Championship. Mero snatched the men's champion title in a close encounter against Port Moresby Kakais on Easter Monday.

General Elections

The Supreme Court has been approached by parliament to clarify who can form the next government. Is it the political party with the most elected members after the elections? Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said the court had ruled that the party with the biggest number of elected members after the general election would be invited by the Governor-General to form the Government.

Bougainville Education Funding

The president of Bougainville, John Momis, says the region's education sector is facing a huge problem because of chronic underfunding. Many in the autonomous Papua New Guinea region were denied an education by the civil war and Mr Momis says now a second generation risks missing out on schooling.

UPNG Dormitory Fire

Fire has destroyed the Talaigu Dormitory at the University of PNG. The dorm is used by over 80 first year students. Images on Facebook showed the fire burning on the top floor of the dorms.

Peter Nepil, an acting manager for the Community Development and Welfare Department, has advised parents in two Highlands provinces to stop marrying off their sons and daughters at an early age because they often end up in problems.

Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has urged Papua New Guineans to speak out on the importance of protecting institutions of state from improper influence, intimidation and harassment and financial and procedural abuse.

Tokua Runway Problems

Civil Aviation Minister Davis Steven says National Airport Corporation (NAC) engineers will look into cracks in the Tokua Airport runway. East New Britain Governor Ereman ToBaining Jr had raised concerns about the problems at the airport, which was affecting flights into the province.

PNG Traditions Digitised

After cataloguing the family histories of - among others - Jews in Israel, Protestants in Denmark and Mormons in Utah, an Israel-based online genealogy platform is going where no genealogists have gone before. A team from MyHeritage has visited PNG, determined to document the family history, lifestyle and rituals that have been passed along only by word of mouth within tribes.

Counterfeit Products

Counterfeit Products in PNG seem to cover all areas of consumer interest. Recently in Lae police confiscated 526 containers of counterfeit deodorant body spray. Unfortunately there are more than just deodorants being sold such as food, beverages, clothes, shoes, pharmaceuticals, electronics, auto parts, toys, and even currency to name a few. The National Department of Health (NDoH) has taken into the account the threat and begun its review on the Medicine and Cosmetic Act 1999 to curb down on counterfeit medicinal drugs under its strategic National Health Plan 2011-2020.

The return of writs for next year's general election is expected in July, Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says. The local level government ones are scheduled for two weeks later on the 7th of August.

Oil Palm Loss

It has been estimated that West New Britain province and the country has lost 4-million Kina from oil palm exports over the last six months. The Oil Palm Industry Corporation Acting Project Manager, Michael Buka, says the economy loss will continue for the next two years.

Fishing Competition

A fishing competition at the Port Moresby Adventure Park has seen residents out in large numbers attempting to catch specially tagged fish. Sixty-three fish have been tagged with different colours representing different value prizes. Prizes ranged from K100 to K5,000 for each tagged fish.

Marijuana Plantation Found

A marijuana plantation has been found on the border of Indonesia and PNG. Members of an Indonesian military border security task force along the country's border with PNG have discovered a marijuana plantation in Kalilapar Village, Keerom, Papua.
