ANZAC Day has come and gone.

Sport Venue Upgrades

Work has begun on upgrading the training venues for the FIFA Under 20 Women's Football World Cup in PNG. The 17 training venues will be at Bisini, Sir John Guise, Murray Barracks, University of Papua New Guinea, Institute of Public Administration, Gerehu Secondary School, Gordons Secondary School, Port Moresby National High School and Port Moresby International School.

A shortage of foreign currency is affecting all businesses in the country. Puma Energy, a major importer of crude oil, says it has been badly affected by the current shortage of foreign currency in the country.

Look Into Inquiry

The Police Commissioner Gari Baki's decision to set up an inquiry into the affairs of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate may be subjudice, National Court Judge Justice Colin Makail said. Justice Makail said this while presiding over a court proceeding between Internal Taskforce Sweep Director Sam Koim, Prime Minister O'Neill, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, Attorney-General Ano Pala and the State.

Oro Rice

Six tons of Oro rice have left the shores of Northern Province and shipped to Trukai Industries in Lae, Morobe Province, to be on the shelves in shops. Another 18 tons are packed and will depart the Oro wharf in the coming months.

South African-based Harmony Gold Mining Company has reported "continuing exploration success" at its 100 per cent-held Kili Teke prospect in the Hela.

PX Cadet Program

The cadet programs for pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers have been a significant achievement for Air Niugini, the national flag carrier. Board Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, says the cadet programs are part of a training series that Air Niugini has invested in to train locals on the job.

FORMER Education secretary Dr Michael Tapo is facing charges of official corruption, misappropriation and abuse of office in relation to a K1.2 million paid to a construction firm.

PX Maintain Services

Although half of the domestic routes Air Niugini flies to are unprofitable the Board Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, says Air Niugini, and its subsidiary Link PNG will maintain its services in flying to these locations.

Air Niugini's ability to do business is hampered by the fact that many airports do not support night time flights so the fleet can only operate during daylight hours.

Water Supply Cut

The water supply to Buimo Prison and the police barracks at Bumbu and Tent City in Lae have been disconnected because of outstanding rates totalling K4.5 million, Water PNG says.

Anglicare Drop-in Centre

Anglicare Drop-in Centre, in Waigani Port Moresby, has recently received cash and kind donations from international marketing company, JM Ocean Avenue. Anglicare Foundation says the donation will keep the Drop-in Centre open for the year.

Refugee Arrested

An Iraqi refugee has been arrested for trying to break back into the guarded transit centre on Manus Island after deciding he could not cope with freedom in one of PNG's biggest cities. Three refugees who have left Manus Island to try and rebuild their lives in Lae after being granted refugee status have returned to the island, saying they feel safer in the transit centre.

Lae BSP Improves Services

Lae's Bank South Pacific (BSP) has developed a more customer friendly environment with the inclusion of new seats. The new set-up will also cut down on the waiting time for customers and will help them serve customers effectively. The original set up of this office was very small. It did not have enough space for customers.

Human Rights Review

A critical report by the United Nations Human Rights Council of PNG's controversial Special Agricultural and Business Leases, or SABLs, will feature in the country's human rights review next month.
