Students Burn Cars

Students at PNG's biggest university have clashed with university security guards, burning cars and trucks as tensions over political protests continue. The violence came two weeks after dozens of students were injured when police opened fire on a protest march.

Uni-Venture Building Burns

The Uni-Venture building at the University of PNG has gone up in flames destroying many books from a collection estimated to cost around PGK1.5 million. One of the books contained in the Uni-Venture office was the Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare autobiography.

The Solomon Star reports the Solomon Islands government is repatriating students currently studying in PNG.

Good News for Goodfellow's

Perth zoo has successfully bred a Goodfellow's tree kangaroo for the first time in 36 years, bringing the number of males in the endangered marsupial's global captive breeding population to 15.

The Goodfellow's kangaroo was listed as endangered after being been hunted to dangerously low levels in its native Papua New Guinea.





Touaguba Hill Paradise

National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop, today oversaw a ground breaking ceremony for a K90 million housing project at Touaguba Hill Paradise. The site development will comprise of three buildings with nine levels each, including basement parking.

The project has a construction area of over 23,000 square metres.

Trukai Fun Run

The annual Trukai Fun Run is on today - Sunday 26th June. Air Niugini has presented fun run T Shirts to several schools in Port Moresby. Air Niugini Marketing Manager, Ms. Nori Maniana presented the shirts to students at Holy Rosary Primary School at six mile and St Peter's Primary School at Erima.

PNG Eyes Sovereign Bond Debut

PNG, one of the least explored countries on earth with one of poorest records for government transparency, is attempting to drum up investor interest for a debut sovereign bond.

According to one investor planning to attend PNG's meeting, the country is also likely to be a draw thanks to its rich reserves of oil and natural gas and what he called "new borrower" curiosity.

West Papuan Citizenship

West Papuans who have been living in PNG for many decades will be granted citizenship soon. The PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority will also embark on registering all West Papuan refugees who have crossed over from Indonesia to seek refugee status in PNG.

"So far we have over 10,000 refugees from West Papua who have lived with us for a very long time, and we have commenced registration of them with the view to finally granting them legal status," said Deputy Chief Migration officer for Refugee Division, Esther Gaegaming.

University of Goroka

The University of Goroka Council has announced the appointment of Dr Musawe Sinebare as the University's vice-chancellor. Dr Sinebare fills a position which had been vacant following the death of acting vice-chancellor, Associate Professor John Kola.

Exercise Koa Moana

Exercise Koa Moana is the first direct draining exercise between U.S. Marines and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force. It involves over 130 service members from the PNG Defence Force and the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy. "This exercise is going to be the first of what should be many opportunities to broaden and deepen the ties of friendship and professionalisation," said Joel F. Maybury, the Deputy Chief of Mission with the U.S. Embassy in PNG.

Gender Based Violence

Rates of gender-based violence in PNG (and in the Pacific Islands region more broadly) are among the highest in the world. Estimates from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) suggest that 70% of women in PNG experience some degree of physical or sexual assault in their lifetime.

Agriculture Exports Down

According to Bank of Papua New Guinea data agriculture export income in 2015 was less than half of 2011 levels for PNG. The drop is partly attributed to lower export prices, but also to significantly lower production levels.

New Appointments

A new Administrator for the Hela Province, Mr. William Bando, has been sworn in by the Governor General Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio at Government House along with a new Correctional Service Commissioner Michael Waipo.

The two were encouraged and challenged to deliver what is required of them as leaders.
