O'Neill Takes on Facebook

Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says Facebook has become a tool of disruption in some societies. Mr O'Neill made the comment at the APEC meeting in Peru last week where he questioned the Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, on what his company is doing to manage misinformation and messages of hate.

Federated States of Micronesia Flights

The national flag carrier, Air Niugini, will commence flights to the Federated States of Micronesia on the 3rd of December. It will be operating two return air services a week, every Wednesday and Saturday, from Port Moresby to Chuuk and Pohnpei.

Port Moresby has caught basketball fever. The Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre has been seeing a lot more visitors lately thanks to the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea's (BFPNG) Twilight Basketball program.

Dangerous Volcanoes

PNG hides some of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. The volcanoes of the island nation have produced some of the largest eruptions in the past few millennia. Dakataua, Pago, Billy Mitchell have erupted in the last 10,000 years, while Rabaul, Tavui, Ulawun, Lolobau, Lamington, Karkar, Manam and Long Island have all experienced numerous VEI 4 eruptions over that time span. A VEI 4 eruption is a smaller volcano that have erupted at least 0.1 cubic kilometres at a time.

World Cup Boost

The economy of Port Moresby has been given a K25 million boost by hosting of the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup Soccer championship. The beneficiaries include service providers such as hotels, PMV buses, private hospitals, motor dealers, caterers, tourism, art and craft and small and medium enterprises alike and more than 1000 youths, contracted to help.

Rabaul Queen Trial Funding

The Finance Secretary Dr. Ken Rangan, Treasury Secretary Dairi Vele, Justice Secretary Dr. Lawrence Kalinoe and Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari, have all been ordered to appear in court at the Rabaul Queen Trial. Kokopo National Court presiding Judge, Terence Higgins ordered the four men to appear at the Kokopo National court on the 30 November, to explain why the Rabaul Queen trial was not adequately funded as directed by the Justice Minister, Ano Palo, in June.

Air Niugini

Air Niugini has taken delivery of a fifth Fokker 70 aircraft. The aircraft is currently awaiting completion of regulatory approvals and paperwork from CASA PNG prior to commencing operations. Air Niugini is expecting another four Fokker 70 aircraft during 2017, to take the total up to nine aircraft.

Oro Bridges Reconstruction Project

The Oro Bridges Reconstruction Project is set to be completed this month following the completion of restoration work to four bridges destroyed by Cyclone Guba. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has visited Cuba on an official visit to the country. He was welcomed at José Martí International Airport's Terminal 1 by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra Díaz. During his stay he held official talks with Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of Cuba's Councils of State and Ministers.

Marine Industrial Zone

The PNG government is planning to get its Pacific Marine Industrial Zone project up and running in Madang Province in the first quarter of 2017. This is according to the vice minister in charge of the project Anton Yagama who is also the MP for, Usino Bundi.

Election Laws Condemned

Corruption watchdog, Transparency International (PNG) Incorporated, has condemned the proposed changes to election laws describing them as "undemocratic and unconstitutional". TIPNG chairman Lawrence Stephens issued a news statement yesterday condemning the proposed changes which would be tabled in Parliament in January. The Government wanted the changes to be approved so that they could come into effect in time for the 2017 National Election.

Tax Evasion Crackdown

The Oro Governor, Gary Juffa, has called on the government of PNG to crack down on tax avoidance in the forestry and fisheries industries as well as in the property and consultancy areas of businesses. Mr Juffa said he would also propose a sugar tax in a private members bill in January.

New Cardinal

A ceremony has taken place at the Vatican to elevate the 17 new Cardinals. Only 16 of the new Cardinals were present for the ceremony. Archbishop John Ribat of PNG was one of them. Thirteen of them are under 80 and therefore eligible to take part in the next secret conclave to elect the new Pope, the head of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. They are known as cardinal electors.

APEC Focus

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has welcomed the commitment of fellow APEC Leaders to strengthen food security around the region, which he said will benefit both the people and food producers of PNG. Mr O'Neill said climate change and extreme weather pose a major challenge for food production and food security, and APEC Leaders have instructed officials in their respective countries to be proactive in dealing with this threat.

Budget Black Hole Found

Former Deputy Commissioner for Customs, Kessy Sawang, says she has uncovered a multi-billion dollar mistake in the government's 2016 National Budget which amounts to an 'unbelievable breach of the Constitution'. She said the discrepancy meant the PNG National Government had engaged in unlawful spending.

Hagen to Jayapura

PNG Air has been given the green light to commence flights to Jayapura in neighbouring Indonesia. PNG Air's Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Abbot, revealed the airline plans to start a tri-weekly service in February next year. National carrier Air Niugini indicated earlier this year that it was also considering re-introducing a service to Jayapura.

Athletics PNG has endorsed Goroka Athletics Association to conduct the Bank South Pacific (BSP) Highlands Athletics Championship at the National Sports Institute in Goroka from 25 to 27 Nov.

PNG's Forestry Industry Association says increasing the tax could jeopardise many of the 15,000 local jobs the sector is understood to directly provide.

Flights to Goroka Cancelled

PNG Air yesterday announced that due to the damage to the runway at Goroka in Eastern Highlands, the airline has cancelled scheduled services to the port until further notice. In a statement, PNG Air said the damage had reached a level that the airline felt it posed a significant safety threat to operations.
