Disaster Appeal
The National Broadcasting Commission has launched an appeal for the people
of Wewak district who were hit by an earthquake recently and the people of
West New Britain who have been affected and displaced by the eruption of the
Mt Pago volcano. Contributions can be made by ringing the NBC on phone number

Web Ring / Ring Link
What is a Ring? A Ring is a group of like-minded sites with a common theme
linked together allowing a surfer to go forwards or backwards in the ring.
You can also list all the ring members and surf to the one that interest you
the most. If you are daring then you can select a site randomly from the ring.
The PNG Ring is for sites with PNG content.
PNG Ring
I am attempting to revive the PNG Ring that used to be hosted at http://www.webring.org.
Webring was taken over by Yahoo and almost brought to its knees. Yahoo has
now passed it on and the webring idea is now alive and well. RingLink, a WebRing
competitor, allows a ringmaster to host their own ring on their own website.
The PNG Ring is now hosted at http://www.png-gossip.com/pngring. If you have
a PNG site I suggest you surf to http://www.png-gossip.com/pngring and go
through the ring. It only has a few members at present. Most are still left
at the old ring site - http://www.michie.net/pngring. If you think the ring
idea will help you then join the ring. The old ring will not be disabled as
I feel having two rings will let your viewers come from two different areas
and you can also have them directed to different areas of your site.
Deskless
The Post Courier has carried an article stating that unofficially up to 60
percent of school children around the country do not have a desk to sit at
to do their lessons. The majority of children have to sit on the floor to
do their schooling. In a bid to correct this the Port Moresby Rotary Club
has distributed 1400 free desks to local schools.
Hiri Moale Festival
The Hiri Moale festival was held over a five-day period and was hailed as
a huge success by locals and visitors from Port Moresby's sister cities of
Townsville, Australia and Nausori, Fiji.
Miss Hiri Hanenamo
The new Hiri Hanenamo Queen is 24-year-old Kori Noka from Pari village. The
runner-up was Miss Nido Saka of Kira Kira village while 22-year-old Michelle
Pala of Porebada won Miss Hetura (Friendship). Last year's Miss Hiri Hanenamo

Independence Day
Independence day in Moresby was really a non-event. The only event was really
the flag raising ceremony. Moresby was lucky that the Hiri Festival was on
at the same time. Other provinces had special celebrations and by all accounts
were very successful.
Professional Standards
After twenty-seven years of independence the Minister for Higher Education,
Research, Science & Technology has said that the Somare Government aims
to develop PNG professionals such doctors, lawyers, engineers and research
scientists to international standards. Many PNG people have reached very high
standards are employable anywhere in the world but the majority of them have
had to travel overseas for that training.
Angau Cancer Unit
Leaders have been urged to work together to help rebuild the country's only
cancer treatment unit at Lae's Angau Memorial General Hospital. The unit had
been closed for the last two years because of a lack funding, equipment and
trained staff over the years.
Gold
Approximately four tonnes of gold are produced annually using alluvial methods
in PNG but only two tonnes are reported as official gold production and can
be accounted for. The Government has been urged to intervene and centralise
the trading of gold in the country in an effort to stamp out gold smuggling
and illegal trading.
Lihir Island
Mining company, Lihir Gold, has boosted law and order on Lihir Island by donating
a new vehicle for use by the resident magistrate, who was appointed this year,
and the New Ireland provincial government has donated a vehicle for use by
the local police.
Southern Highlands
Since the Electoral Commission declared votes null and void no votes previously
cast for the Southern Highlands provincial seat will be counted in the new
election. New candidates will also be eligible to contest the six seats along
with those who contested in the failed elections however fresh elections will
only be conducted after peace and normality have been restored in the province.
ANZ Bank

numerous enquiries and obtaining the PIN I was told "the card embosser
is broken and we are waiting a part"
I must presume that there is only one of these machines in PNG to cover the
whole country !!, obviously they have little regard for customer service,
and obviously have not heard of airfreight !!
To rub salt into the wounds they changed my phone banking access number to
reflect the new card ( which I do not have) so I was unable to use this service
either until I managed to find somebody who could give me the new number.
The Waigani Branch still frequently do not answer their phones either, just
listen while you are standing in line for the 25 minutes it takes to get served.

At least the old PNGBC did away with embossing your name on the cards and
gave out blank cards. Let's hope their new electronic banking, over the Internet, goes a bit better!
Power Problems
Residents of Port Moresby have been warned to switch off all unnecessary items
of electrical equipment in attempt to save power. The power company is rationing
the release of water for the hydroelectric scheme and use by city residents.

Miss PNG Red Cross
Many of the contestants in the Miss PNG Red Cross contest are holding various
fund raising functions. Miss Air Niugini, Rita Aisi, has held many successful
sausage sizzles outside the Air Niugini head quarters at Seven Mile. The other

Tabuchi, Miss Western Province -- Naomi Kapal, Miss Club Galaxy and Miss NCD/Central

Election Petitions
Both the Prime Minister and his son have had petitions filed against them
over the results of the recent elections. The petitions filed separately in
the Court of Disputed Returns contained similar allegations of bribery and

Gaming Funds
A former MP has been arrested and charged with misappropriation of K60,000
belonging to the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB). The money was supposed
to be used for the hire of a helicopter to transport building materials for
the construction of a building but the building was constructed and the builder
shipped all materials.
Air Niugini
Air Niugini expects its cadet pilots to be graduating on the 27 September.
In a cost saving measure Air Niugini recently retrenched a faithful worker
who was paid peanuts but for every day for the last umpteen years has raised
the PNG flag and the Air Niugini flag every morning before 8am and lowered
it every night after 4pm. Since this persons departure Air Niugini has been
plagued by the fact that they have had to have installed two or three new
flag poles at considerable cost despite the fact that the old faithful worker
had no trouble with the existing poles. The cost of the flagpoles probably

Books for Lae
A container load of books is headed for Lae from Townsville in Australia.
The Lions Club in Townsville has sent 60 cartons of books to their counterparts
in Lae for distribution.
Narcotics Bureau
The Narcotic Bureau has lobbied the PNG Medical Symposium for support to push
for a controlled substance act. The Bureau also said that a community-based
approach to drug prevention should be considered.
Tomaringa Barracks
The Tomaringa Police Barracks in East New Britain have been condemned because
they are unfit for human habitation. Police and families living in the barracks
have been given seven days to vacate.
Goroka Show
The Goroka show held over the recent weekend was a success with 60 dance groups
participating. A beauty contest was also held.
Police Force
The new Police Commissioner Sam Inguba has made his first official appointment,
only days into the job by appointing the Assistant Police Commissioner Fred
Sheekiot (Personnel and Training) as the Acting Deputy Commissioner Administration.
Police Porn Charges
A policewoman has appeared before the Waigani Grade 5 Court for charges relating
to taking part in obscene sexual acts with another person. The 23 year old
from Pomava village in Kieta, Bougainville, appeared before the court but
her case was adjourned to October 15.
Bougainville Autonomy
It is expected that elections for an autonomous Bougainville provincial Government
will be held by November 2003. This has been based on the assumption that
the weapons disposal program would be completed on schedule and a draft constitution
for the province would be finalised by the middle of 2003.
East New Britain
The organisers of the three-day East New Britain youth show say it was a huge
success, which culminated in the Independence Day celebrations on Monday.
Exhibitions at show included health awareness, cocoa and coconut production
techniques and the Kerevat National High School expressive arts department's
collection of student art as well as a colourful display by the Chinese community
of a dragon dance.
Madang Hospital
The Modilon hospital has been hit by drastic budgetary cuts and will be scaling
down some of its services and attend to emergencies only. Patients who can
be treated by taking medication will be treated at outpatients at the hospital
or the nearest health centre.
Alotau Eye Clinic
An eye specialist, Dr Jan Tynousky, has been in Alotau and has managed to
check and operate on more than 10 eye patients.
AIDS Training
The National AIDS Council is training coordinators to be accountable and transparent
in managing funds from all donor agencies. The training is part of AusAID's
K100 million assistance to the PNG Government to help in the fight against
HIV/AIDS.
Mount Hagen
The Asian Development Bank is providing funding for the sewerage system in
Mount Hagen. The project is part of the water supply and sanitation project
aimed at improving the quality of life in the town.
