AFL International Cup
The PNG Mosquitoes are set to defend their AFL International Cup title between the 12th and 27th of August in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. The Mossies are the defending champions after a come from behind win over New Zealand in the 2008 finals at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, after finishing runner up to Ireland in 2002, and then to New Zealand in 2005.
For the first time the women's PNG Flame team will be taking part in an international tournament. Falcon Jet For Sale
The new government of Peter O'Neill has given instructions to Air Niugini to arrange the sale of the government's K120 million executive Falcon jet as part of a cost-cutting exercise to counter the blowout in the cost of running government. The new PM said it cost the nation K120 million to buy it and K22 million a year to operate it. He also promised to impose strict controls on domestic and international travels by ministers and departmental heads.

O'Neill, has vowed to introduce free education up to Year 10, create a centralised medical supplies base, rebuild the nation's core highways, extend the key airstrips in Port Moresby and Lae and rebuild the army and police.
Fuel Increases
The petrol price for July was K3.55 toea per litre but customers in Port Moresby would be paying a retail price of K3.59 toea per litre, an extra four toea for the month of August. Diesel will sell for K3.08 toea per litre and kerosene will be K2.98 toea per litre. Prices at other centres will depend on the cost of transporting the fuel.

Govt Cautioned
Dame Carol Kidu, the MP for Moresby North-West, has said the intention by the new govt to provide free education was commendable except it did not cater for teacher training and construction of new classrooms for increase enrolments. She said the Government should be careful in what it promised to the people. On corruption, she cautioned MPs using rhetoric saying some Members in Government were already implicated in the Finance Inquiry.

14th Pacific Games
Over 300 athletes from Team PNG have recently met at the Sir John Guise Arena in Port Moresby for a one-day workshop as part of the preparation for the 14th Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia, between the 27th of Augusta and the 11th of September.

The National Gaming Control Board has fulfilled its commitment to Team PNG by injecting K684,000 to help pay for the athletes levy fees to the New Caledonia Games.
Helicopter Crash
A twin-engined helicopter, (P2-RUH) operated by Lae-based Manolos Aviation, has crashed in Morobe province. The helicopter was returning to Lae when it went missing between Mumeng and Wafi. A statement from the office of the Civil Aviation has confirmed that there were three people on board the helicopter. Unfortunately, there were no survivors.

Motorcycle Club Enduro
The Port Moresby Motorcycle Club, based out of the Car Club in Waigani, Port Moresby, will be holding its second Off-road Night Enduro for Motorcycles. Club president Peter Jackson said: "We test-drove this event for the first time last year and it seemed popular so we added it to our regular racing calendar for this year."

People living on Manus Island have been reported as being delighted to hear the island's mothballed detention centre is a step closer to being reopened. Manus Island hotel owner Ken Kuso says everyone on Manus will welcome the PNG government's support for Australia's proposal.

Former Census taker, Ben Kiele, says PNG has lost the plot in the 2011 census. Mr Kiele said the 2011 Census is a failed one because the senior management officers of the National Statistical Office are not well versed experienced in conducting previous census and surveys.

Morobe Road Accidents
Within 30 hours 13 people have died in two separate road accidents at Sasiang Farm in Morobe. The accidents occurred along the Markham plains in Morobe while the vehicles were travelling to Lae from Mt Hagen (Western Highlands) and Madang respectively.
