Shell Signs PNG Deal
Shell and PNG Petromin have signed a joint oil and gas exploration deal. Under the agreement, Shell will finance all joint exploration and development of new oil and gas projects, as well as other projects that Petromin already has.

Smartraveller Advisory
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's has issued a new Smartraveller advisory for Papua New Guinea. The advice has been reviewed and reissued. It includes new information in the Summary and under Safety and Security: Civil Unrest/Political Tension (violent civil unrest in Mendi). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

The PNG Sports Minister has urged all members of Team PNG to be good ambassadors while competing at the XIV Pacific Games in New Caledonia.

Cricket PNG Donation
The National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) has donated K150,000 to Cricket PNG to help develop and promote the sport in nine regional centres. NGCB also donated K75,000 to the Port Moresby Softball Association and K25,000 to the Anti-dope Committee, which comes under the PNG Sports Federation and Olympic Committee.
The PNG Sports Federation and Olympic Committee has also received K500,000 from Trukai Industries. The money will go towards paying the costs of Team PNG's athletes to Noumea.

National Day of Repentance
The office of the National Executive Council has confirmed the 26th of August as a public holiday to mark the National Day of Repentance. The National Day of Repentance, as gazetted, was to be observed next year but it had been confirmed by the Business Council of PNG that the day would be observed from this year onward.

Conflict Islands
Access to the Conflict Islands will be enhanced at the start of 2012 with the opening of the first resort located on the Island of Panasesa. The resort will consists of six traditional but air-conditioned double occupancy, ensuite equipped, timber bungalows complete with beachfront balconies.

The Conflict Islands group is located in the Lower Milne Bay area, at the top of the Coral Sea, and boasts world-renowned diving and fishing experiences.
Ramu Nickel Mine
The National Court has cleared the way for the Ramu Nickel mine to dump millions of tonnes of waste into the sea off the coast of Madang province. Landowners were hoping the court would permanently stop the dumping. The mine should produce its first nickel and cobalt in the coming months.

Asylum Deal
Just as another boat of asylum seekers were intercepted off Australia's Christmas Island the governments of PNG and Australia have signed an agreement to reopen the asylum seeker assessment centre on Manus Island.
It is unclear how soon the Manus Island centre could be opened, and what scale of financial assistance would be provided to the PNG government. Operational details are yet to be worked out.

Oil Search Confident
Oil Search is confident about its $US15 billion project in PNG despite concerns the O'Neill government is set to overhaul land ownership. Managing director, Peter Botten, said the company had realised an average price of $US116.89 a barrel, which helped lift revenue to $US371.1m from $US276.6m in the previous first half, despite a 10 per cent fall in oil and gas sales.

Air Niugini has recently taken part in a sports tournament held in the Solomon Islands. Team members competed against the Solomon Airlines in various sports including soccer and darts.

Wounded by Arrow
A young village boy near the border of the Gulf and Southern Highlands has had to visit the big city of Port Moresby in a helicopter to have an arrow removed from his right shoulder. Before the helicopter ride and his first trip to the National Capital the boy suffered for four days while a rescue party walked to the nearest aid post for help. While being carried day and night by his brothers, the boy had to endure agonising pain, countless tears while drifting in and out of consciousness.

Madang Housing Estate
A man from Port Macquarie in Australia has designed a model of a proposed housing estate and golf course for a gated community for expatriates in Madang.
Port Macquarie is a coastal destination just North of Sydney, New South Wales.

Milne Bay Sep 1942
Between the 3rd and 6th of September 1942 the Japanese were forced to retreat from Milne Bay by Allied forces. This was the first Allied land victory in the Pacific War and is significant as it destroyed the dominant belief that Japanese soldiers were unbeatable in jungle fighting.
