Ozone Action Poster

World Environment Day was yesterday - the 5th of June. As part of the celebrations there is a poster competition for children between 13 and 18 that ends on the 12th of June. The topic / theme of the poster is "Protect the ozone layer, Protect Life". Here is a link to a document / flyer about the competition. --

Solving Sorcery Beliefs

A missionary in the highlands of the country says the medical profession can help police in spreading awareness about human disease, to counter sorcery beliefs.


Kookaburra/Kumul Flyover

A 600 metre bridge near Jackson's airport has been opened in Port Moresby. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill officially cut the ribbon and opened the K165 million bridge built near Jacksons Airport on the 31st of May. The flyover has been completed just in time for the 2015 Pacific Games.

PM O'Neill also renamed the Kookaburra Flyover as the Kumul Flyover to it as being truly Papua New Guinean.



Trukai Fun Run

The annual Trukai Fun Run will take place after the official opening of the Pacific Games. The run will be held on the 5th of July just before the start of the triathlon events.

The fun run has been an annual event around the country for the last 32 years and this is the 16th year that Trukai has supported the event.

Pacific Games Relay

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay has reached Lae after travelling through the Nawaeb District of Morobe province. The relay finished at the Sir Ignatius Kilage stadium with the Baton being taken on a final lap of honour by the Snax Tigers rugby league team before being handed back to Oil Search ambassador Bart Philemon, who accepted the Baton and departed by helicopter.


The Relay has made its way to Milne Bay. The Baton was handed over to Milne Bay Provincial Governor, Titus Philemon, at Gurney airport.


Pacific Games News

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, will open the Pacific Games. The Games Organising Committee (GOC) was pleased that a member of the royal family would open the 15th Pacific Games in Port Moresby on the 4th of July.


Fijian Pacific Games athletes dominate weekend competition --

Team PNG will move into the Games Village on the 28th of June, one week before the Pacific Games Opening Ceremony, chef de Mission Richard Kassman has said. Some sports will start competitions before the Games opening ceremony and they are soccer, swimming and triathlon.

Men's Softball Axed

Due to a lack of entries Men's softball has been axed from the Pacific Games. The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has admitted the sport's cancellation was "disappointing". Only hosts PNG put forward a team for the men's competition and Port Moresby 2015. The women's tournament will go ahead as planned.


AFP Review

Papua New Guinea's police commissioner wants to review an arrangement that provides for Australian Federal Police (AFP) to be deployed to the Pacific island nation.


Child Marriages

A new law making marriage under the age of 18 illegal is expected to be tabled in parliament soon.


Maternal Mortality

The Prime Minister has expressed his confidence and appreciation for the work of the Safe Motherhood Alliance of Papua New Guinea and their work to reduce maternal mortality in the nation.


Students Back

Students who were on strike in Lae have returned to classes after reaching agreement in their dispute with management over the Institute's crumbling infrastructure.


Madang Resort

The Foreign Affairs Minister says the country is standing firm on a travel ban imposed on Australians to the autonomous region of Bougainville.

BSP is helping more people in the country to acquire the culture of saving and budgeting so they can manage their finances much better. By being able to budget and save, people can alleviate and reduce some of the stress involved in managing money better, spend within means, and eventually save for a special occasion.


Betel Nut Confiscated

A record haul of Betel nut has been confiscated in the run up to the Pacific Games. Police have recently confiscated a record 1,000 bags of betel nut in a dawn raid in Hanuabada. No one was arrested in the raid, which police say was part of a clean-up effort ahead of next month's Pacific Games.


Seafarers Found Safe in PNG

Six Filipino seafarers who jumped for their lives after their vessel sank off the coast of Papua New Guinea are now safe.


Land Monitoring System Established

A Satellite Land Monitoring System laboratory has been established at the Office of Climate Change and Development in Port Moresby.


Indonesia-PNG Extradition Treaty

An MP says there's no reason for West Papuan refugees to fear for their safety after the country ratified an extradition treaty with Indonesia. Attorney General, Ano Pala, says the treaty is important as criminals have been using the porous border between the two countries for smuggling and other illegal activities.


Air Niugini / Vanuatu

Vanuatu and PNG have discussed the air space between and potential investments between Port Moresby and Port Vila and PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill suggested connecting the two Melanesian Countries by air.


Soccer Title

Lae City Dwellers have claimed the Telikom National Soccer League after beating Madang 4-1 in the grand final.

Global Year of Action

2015 is the year of global action. This is the year when countries will shape and adopt a new development agenda that will build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This is also the year when they will reach a global agreement on climate change at the Paris Climate Conference.


Walking Fish Worry Australia

Scientists from James Cook University (JCU) have been closely monitoring the movements of the climbing perch from PNG, which has already reached the Torres Strait Islands of Boigu and Saibai.


Internet Costs

The Government is working on a plan to reduce internet costs in the country soon, according to Communication and Information Technology Minister Jimmy Miringtoro.

Minister for Finance, James Marape denies the government can't pay its bills following allegations the budget is under stress.

The Aussie Govt. Smarttraveller website has offered the following change for PNG - The Papua New Guinea Government has announced that the restrictions on Australians travelling to Bougainville have been lifted (see Local travel). We continue to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in Papua New Guinea overall. We continue to advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Porgera Township in Enga Province in the Highlands.
