Independence Day - 16 September

After being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975. Elections in 1972 resulted in the formation of a ministry headed by Chief Minister Michael Somare, who pledged to lead the country to self-government and then to independence. PNG became self-governing on December 1, 1973 and achieved independence on September 16, 1975.

National Airport Corporation

A new seven member board has been appointed by the National Executive Council, to head the National Airport Corporation (NAC). The board comprises of deputy chairman Jerry Agus who is the shareholder nominee and chief executive officer of the Tourism Promotion Authority, current managing director for PNG Country Tours, Wako Napasu, Michael Koison who is the aviation representative, and government representatives Secretary for Transport Roy Mumu and Secretary for Treasury Dairi Vele.

Vale Sir Michael Curtain

Sir Michael Curtain, owner of civil engineering and construction company Curtain Brothers Limited, has passed away in Townsville just before PNG's 41st Independence Anniversary. The late Sir Michael Curtain, passed away at 3:30pm on Sunday Sept 11, 2016 in a hospital in Townsville, Australia.

Sir Michael started the Curtain Group along with his brothers Dan and David Curtain in the country in October 1966 with the commencement of operations by the company known as Curtain Bros Papua New Guinea Limited.





Buimo Prison

Prison insiders and senior prison officers at Buimo prison in Morobe province continue to point out that the escape of prisoners in February was the result of ongoing protests over food rations and the general state of conditions inside the Buimo prison.

Kokoda Foundations

The Kokoda Memorial Foundation was formed in 1998 to build and maintain memorials along the Kokoda track to tell a story so when you get to a place like Imita Ridge you can actually read and see what happened during the Second World War.

Aside from building memorials the foundation also hopes to aid local Papua New Guineans with basic infrastructure.

In PNG, 28% of the population lives below the national poverty line.

For every 1,000 babies born in PNG, 45 die before their first birthday.

PNG Air has welcomed its latest ATR 72-600 aircraft, Alpha Tango Charlie. The aircraft has made its maiden voyage to Vanimo. PNG Air Vanimo was confident that the services will increase capacity. The plane has also flown to Daru.

Fooey - The ABC Dog

The ABC's Port Moresby bureau only has a few staff members: me, the local producer Joy, Nick the caretaker, four security guards and Fooey, the ABC dog. Fooey is paid in dry dog food and tinned fish and she is well worth it. Every night she aggressively protects the ABC house from the stray dogs which wander along our street, as well as the occasional foolish cat.

Potape Named Hela Governor

The Provincial Assembly of Hela has elected Francis Potape as its new governor. The Komo-Magarima MP was elected by nine assembly members with the remaining four members all absent, including rival MP Philip Undialu and finance minister James Marape.

Improving Literacy in PNG

To improve literacy rates in the country, the Department of Education with support from the World Bank has established more than 21,000 classroom libraries across Papua New Guinea.

More than a third of Papua New Guineans are illiterate, with the majority living in rural communities without access to government services such as education.

A new literacy program is helping to improve reading and learning skills in schools.

More than 21,000 classroom libraries in all 22 provinces of PNG will have received reading books by end of 2015.

Walk for Peace

As many as 10-thousand people walked for peace in the Papua New Guinea capital. The governor of Port Moresby says the Sunday morning event was planned as a stand against violence in the country following a brawl at a rugby league match which left an innocent bystander dead.

How Much is a Shower?

PNG is the world's most expensive place to take a shower, with the cost of a typical eight-minute rinse approaching $3.50 - or a whopping 70 percent of an average person's daily income, according to data highlighting inequalities in access to water and sanitation worldwide.

Port Moresby General Hospital has converted some of its Children's Outpatient Clinic into a Children's Emergency Department.

New Lae Clinic

Lae businessman Sir Bob Sinclair has opened a new clinic at the Ward Two council area. Named the Sir Bob Sinclair Clinic it will serve people in Ward Two from the City of Lae who previously had to travel to the city to seek medical treatment there. The building cost over K350,000.

New Ireland

A new health system has been introduced into the province of New Ireland on the 12th of September, 2016. The formal declaration of the Provincial Health Authority (PHA) took place in the province's Kavieng Hospital in front a capacity crowd. The occasion also culminated with the opening of the state of the art Operating Theatre and X-Ray suite and provincial medical store and the swearing in of the new PHA Board.
